Chapter 191: Chapter 191

After Avery returned to the villa, she told Claire and Arthur that she wanted to send some of their homemade dishes to a very important person the next morning. She asked them to make three extra portions of food for breakfast. She also requested a high-protein menu.

Arthur commented, "This friend of yours is quite a glutton. He can eat three portions by himself. He can eat even more than me."

Claire was very happy. She promised, "Don’t worry. I guarantee that your friend will eat well and be full."

The next morning, at 8:30 a.m., Avery hurriedly got out of bed and washed up. She carried a new blanket in one hand and a large lunch box in the other. She stuffed everything into the car and went out.

When she arrived at the old residential building, Brandon popped out from the building next to it. He smiled at her and said, "I just came back from a walk. What a coincidence."

Avery noticed the dark circles under Brandon’s eyes. She figured he probably didn’t sleep well last night and had been waiting for her to come over this morning. She pretended not to notice. With a smile, she said, "I brought you food and a new blanket. Let’s bring them in together."

"You even brought me a new blanket!" Brandon’s eyes were slightly red as he said, "Thank you."

Avery stuffed the blanket into Brandon’s arms and said, "I haven’t had my breakfast yet. Let’s eat together."

With a slightly nasal voice, Brandon replied, "Okay."

After entering the house, Avery turned on the television to watch the news. The two of them chatted about current international and domestic affairs as they ate. Surprisingly, they clicked well and enjoyed talking to each other.

When they were almost done with breakfast, Avery asked, "Did you major in artificial intelligence in university?"

Brandon nodded and replied, "Yes, I specialized in artificial intelligence algorithms and models. I’ve been very interested in robots since I was young."

He continued, "My dream is to create intelligent robots that can communicate with humans. They will keep the elderly, children, and the sick company. Not only can they care for humans like our friends, but they can also care for and even protect their owners like nannies."

Avery affirmed him and said, "Your dream sounds great. There is an increasing number of single parents and people living alone nowadays. I’m sure their lives will be happier and better with smart bots by their side."

Brandon nodded and said, "I believe that smart bots cannot completely replace humans. However, they can at least contact emergency services when their owners are sick or unconscious. They can also help take care of children when single parents are out for work or running errands. On top of that, smart bots can help owners take care of pets and do simple house chores. Most importantly, they will never betray their owners."

Avery gave Brandon a thumbs-up and exclaimed, "I want such a smart bot too."

She sincerely agreed with Brandon’s vision. In fact, she already had such a robot. There were two AI robot eagles standing on the roof of the Donyan family residence. Avery figured the robot eagles must have recognized Brandon’s identity when he snuck into the villa. Therefore, they did not sound the alarm.

Brandon said confidently, "I will definitely make the smart bot of my dreams a reality. In the near future, every household will have access to a smart bot."

Avery asked, "Brandon, have you decided which company you want to work for?"

Brandon was serving himself some tuna casserole. He paused for a brief moment when he heard Avery’s question. Then, he regained his composure and said, "I want to start my own company, but it’s an unrealistic idea at the moment. I plan to help Jaden with farming first to earn some capital. Then, I’ll take out a loan or find a few partners to start a company. This process will take at least a few years."

Avery saw the bitterness in Brandon’s eyes and did not continue probing. She encouraged him, saying, "Brandon, you’re still young. There are plenty of opportunities. There’s no rush. Take it slow."

It had been a long time since Brandon last had Claire’s home-cooked meal. He wolfed down a big plate of baked pasta, some tuna casserole, a few chicken wings, and a serving of sautéed mushrooms. What he ate was enough to feed two grown men. There were still plenty of leftovers for Brandon to heat up for another meal or two.

Brandon exclaimed, "This is so delicious! There’s nothing better than a home-cooked meal!"

As he wiped his mouth with a napkin in satisfaction, he packed the remaining food. He narrowed his eyes and sniffed the fragrance of the food. With a satisfied expression, he muttered, "I feel very happy now."

He continued, "I never want to go abroad again for the rest of my life. I want to stay close to home. At least I’m back now."

Even though Brandon did not spell it out loud, Avery could tell that he had been living a difficult life overseas for the past few years. Avery listened to his mumbles silently.

A few minutes later, Brandon carefully closed the lunch box and said, "Avery, I’m going to work. Do you want to go home now, or do you want to stay here?"

Avery said, "I’m going home. I’ll give you a ride on the way."

She was meeting Alexander at night. Therefore, she had to finish her work during the day.

At night, Alexander once again rushed over from Valemont City to treat her to a meal.

Avery said bashfully, "Why don’t I treat you to a meal at Valemont City next time?"

Alexander shook his head in disagreement and said, "No. It’s better for me to come to Rosemont City to see you. There are too many people spying on me in Valemont City. I don’t want the Moran family to notice you."

Avery asked curiously, "Is the Moran family really that scary?"

Avery was astonished by the precautions Alexander had taken to protect Lucy and her over the past few months. Her curiosity was piqued.

Alexander gently turned the glass in his hand. After a moment of silence, he said, "For me, they’re not scary. However, I worry that the people I care about will be hurt again, just like my mother and my sister."

Alexander looked up and stared into Avery’s eyes. He said in a low voice, "If you get hurt by the Moran family because of me, I’ll never be able to forgive myself."

Avery thought, What he said sounds like a confession.

Avery blushed, but it went unnoticed due to the dim light. She said, "I’ve heard about what happened to your sister. As for what happened to your mother... Can you tell me about it? As you’re aware, I’m a detective."

Alexander thought, Did she just admit that she is Lockwood?!

Alexander was not surprised by Avery’s confession. However, he was happy that Avery had taken the initiative to tell him her identity. After all, Avery had been keeping it a secret from everyone else.

"I’m willing to tell you everything."

Alexander was silent for a few seconds before he continued, "Up until now, I still can’t figure out how my mother fell off the building."

Alexander then went on to tell Avery about the death of Maggie.
