Chapter 163: Chapter 163

Avery’s long eyelashes fluttered, and she felt a bit shy at her words. "I know," she said with a squinty smile, gently patting Alexander’s shoulder. "You don’t need to be too touched. You’re my hero."

Alexander chuckled. "Miss Carter, can you really chase off these cannibals by yourself?"

"Not with my bare hands," Avery said, proudly patting her chest. "But fully armed? No problem." She took down the submachine gun slung across her body and placed it next to Alexander. Then she stood tall, one hand holding the gun and the other pointing at the natives as she shouted in Maiselish, "I don’t care if you understand me! But if you don’t leave now, I’ll summon my army and blow your tribe to smithereens!"

The other natives didn’t understand, but the tribal leader did. He looked fearfully at the "steel bird" above, then at the submachine gun in Avery’s hands, recalling how the advanced weaponry of outsiders had slaughtered his people in the past. He wavered and no longer harbored any thoughts of resistance. He took out a bone whistle and blew a retreat signal.

But at that moment, Alexander said, "Find that safe and bring it to me, and I’ll let you take your injured comrades with you, along with some healing medicine."

The tribal leader hesitated for a moment, then replied, "Alright, you wait here." He led his people away.

Avery looked Alexander up and down, frowning. "You’ve sustained so many injuries. I’ll pull the arrows from your back, stop the bleeding, and then we can leave together by helicopter."

Alexander’s hands were covered in blood. There was blood on his left thigh too. The arrow in his back was the least of his wounds. Perhaps beneath his clothes, he had even more injuries. But Alexander shook his head. "I want to wait here for them to bring back the items."

Avery blinked. "Is a diamond worth more than your life?" She added, "The helicopter can’t hover for too long. Those natives might not come back, or maybe they won’t come at all."

Alexander’s expression stiffened slightly. He thought, ’How did Miss Carter know about the diamonds? It must be Louis who told her! When I get back, I’ll leave Louis behind for a bit.’ In just three seconds, his gaze softened. "Miss Carter, what’s in that safe is of immense significance to me. I absolutely must retrieve it. Don’t worry about me. I have a gun, food, and the Guardian. You should return by helicopter and send someone for me tomorrow morning."

At that, he thought of the versatile backpack Avery had given him, feeling a pang of regret. ’I should have asked the tribal leader to leave the backpack behind.’

"That won’t do," Avery said, thinking for a moment. "Since you’re so insistent, you leave by helicopter first, and I’ll stay behind."

Alexander was surprised. He stared at Avery, his expression somewhat strange.

Avery blinked. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Alexander raised a hand to cover his face, chuckling softly. "Miss Carter, I’m a man."

Avery continued to blink, looking puzzled. "So?" Then she exclaimed, "Oh, do you think I’m a lady who can only hide behind a man, waiting to be protected and taken care of?"

"No," Alexander said, lowering his hand and revealing his deep-set eyes, gazing intently at her. "I don’t doubt your abilities at all. I just want to impress you, to show you I can be a hero."

He didn’t say, ’And then you’ll fall for me.’

"Oh, so that’s it," Avery realized, lightly patting his arm and smiling. "You’ve already performed admirably. It’s not embarrassing if you rest now."

Alexander chuckled softly. "If that’s the case, let’s wait together."

Avery considered it. "Okay, we’ll wait together." She took out a satellite phone and made a call. "I’ll be here for a while. I don’t know when I’ll be back. Just drop off the supplies and return. I’ll call you when I need you again."

Soon, the helicopter dropped bundles of supplies. There were medical supplies, tents, bulletproof vests, folding cooking utensils, and fresh food.

Avery took off Alexander’s outer jacket, pulled out the arrows, and tended to his wounds. Then she cut open his pants and stared at the rough bandage on his thigh. "When did you get shot?"

Alexander thought for a moment. "Five or six days ago."

Avery asked, "Have you taken out the bullet?"

Alexander shook his head. "No." He had taken antibiotics and painkillers, sprinkled hemostatic and anti-inflammatory powder on the wound, and wrapped it with bandages, managing to endure until now.

Avery sighed. "You’re lucky. The wound hasn’t gotten infected."

Alexander smiled. "That’s because your medicine is excellent."

Avery shook her head, not criticizing him, but instead took out a pill and fed it to him. "I’m going to extract the bullet now. It might hurt a bit, so take this painkiller first."

With that, she retrieved a thick cylindrical device from the medical kit, unscrewed the bottom cap, placed it over his leg wound, and adjusted the settings. "I’m going to suck out the bullet now. Bear with it."

Sucking out the bullet embedded in his body? Alexander thought and was secretly amazed, but he said nothing, just watching Avery operate the device, extracting the bullet little by little from the flesh. This method of bullet extraction was far more convenient, quick, and safe than surgery.

He looked at Avery, sincerely saying, "Miss Carter, you’re truly remarkable."

Avery smiled, not denying it. "You flatter me."

Alexander grinned. "Miss Carter, how many more hidden talents do you have that I don’t know about?"

Avery efficiently finished dressing his wounds. "Bragging isn’t good. You’ll find out in due time."

She wasn’t necessarily trying to keep it a secret. But she had been underage and in a prestigious school. If her multiple identities were exposed, not only would she lose her peaceful life, but it would also affect her school and classmates. Moreover, with the Murphy family being so greedy, if they knew how capable and wealthy she was, they would undoubtedly exploit her ruthlessly. So, she had to keep it under wraps, at least until she was of age. Now, she was gradually letting her family know her secrets, adapting to the impact she brought to them.

Alexander smiled. "I’m really looking forward to it."
