Chapter 137: Chapter 137

Luna turned around and saw a woman in her late twenties with a pleasant face and figure. She was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and pants, walking over with two bags in her hands. Their gazes met, and Linda’s expression changed instantly. Her eyes filled with jealousy and hostility. Luna was all too familiar with this look. Not wanting to cause trouble, she quickly entered the door and stepped aside, hoping the other woman wouldn’t see her face.

In Linda’s eyes, Luna’s actions only exposed her further. Linda’s expression turned even uglier. She wanted to ask who this woman was, but Jaden’s expression was even more severe. He stared at Linda with a fierce gaze. "Do you think my warning is fake, or do you think it’s unimportant?" he said.

Linda swallowed her hatred and didn’t dare to meet his eyes. She lowered her gaze and said, "Jaden, you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t know you were here beforehand. I thought you were staying at your girlfriend’s house in Rosemont City." When she mentioned the word "girlfriend," she deliberately emphasized it, ensuring Luna could hear her clearly. She continued, "As you know, I used to live here for a long time. I have deep feelings for this place. I’m free this time, so I came over to relax and visit your grandparents." At this point, she raised her voice and called out, "Hello, I’m Linda. I’m here to see you."

Jaden knew she had misunderstood his relationship with Avery, but he didn’t explain. Instead, he said coldly, "My grandparents are not at home. No matter how hard you act, they won’t know. Also, we’ve already told them the truth about your fake marriage. They only hate themselves for misjudging you. If you dare to appear in front of them, I won’t hesitate to gather the entire village to explain the inside story of that wedding back then. I’ll make sure everyone knows the truth."

The wedding had caused a huge commotion back then. They knew they couldn’t hide it forever. To prevent the elderly from suffering too much shock, they spent over half a year revealing the truth bit by bit. First, they said Linda’s father was undergoing major surgery, so the wedding had to be postponed. Then, they explained that Linda’s father needed time to recuperate, and she had to care for him. Later, they claimed the wedding couldn’t proceed without a new house. When the elderly were mentally prepared, Jaden finally told them Linda had left long ago. However, they still didn’t know Linda had cheated them out of $100,000.

The big yellow dog by the door seemed to sense Jaden’s emotions. It bared its fangs at Linda and growled threateningly, as if ready to pounce and chase her away. Of course, it was tied with a rope, but the rope wasn’t thick or tightly secured. Feeling Jaden’s fierce aura and not seeing the elders, Linda didn’t dare to stay any longer. She said, "Since you have a guest, I won’t disturb you anymore." She placed the bags on the ground and turned to leave. As she walked away, she added slowly, "The flowers we planted together back then have grown so beautifully. I miss those times."

Luna was speechless, thinking, ’This woman is shameless!’

Jaden ignored the bags on the ground and turned away. He smiled gently at Luna and said, "Miss Carter, please sit." Luna didn’t ask about the woman. She sat on the sofa and discreetly looked around the room. The small building was over ten years old, a little worn but very clean. The walls had been freshly painted, free of dust. The layout was simple: a spacious hall with a living room at the front, featuring a sofa, coffee table, television cabinet, and a corridor. The back half was an open kitchen with a dining table. To the left and right were rooms and a bathroom with outward-facing windows. She didn’t go upstairs but assumed the layout was similar, with balconies on the second floor adorned with flowers and birdcages.

Jaden placed the vegetables in a basin, soaked them in water, and poured Luna a glass of water. "Sit for a while. If you want to watch TV, feel free to turn it on. I’ll take a shower and change before cooking," he said. Luna politely replied, "Thank you."

Jaden went upstairs. Luna took a sip of the water, and her eyes lit up. The water was pure, slightly sweet, and refreshing—definitely not tap water. It might have been spring water. She stood up, sipping the water as she studied the wall of photos. She was amazed. The photos were of the Carter family, all of them handsome men and beautiful women. She thought, ’No wonder Mr. Carter is so handsome. He could rival any idol in the entertainment industry.’

She walked to the door and looked out. The view was breathtaking. The building was situated on higher ground, offering a panoramic view of a flower path and a vast vegetable field. The scenery was so beautiful it lifted her spirits, easing the pressure in her heart. She suddenly understood why the female lead in that drama had cured her depression by living a pastoral life.

Footsteps approached from behind. She turned and was slightly stunned. Jaden had changed into a white shirt, jeans, and casual shoes. His short hair was slightly damp, and his features, now free of a hat, looked even more striking. He looked refreshing and effortlessly attractive. He smiled at Luna and rolled up his sleeves. "I’ll take about 40 minutes to cook," he said, walking into the kitchen. He washed his hands, dried them, and put on clean food-grade gloves before starting to prepare the ingredients.

Luna watched curiously as he cooked. He picked up a cucumber, washed it, dried it, and placed it on the chopping board. With a few swift cuts, he broke it into pieces and placed them in a bowl, sprinkling a pinch of salt. Luna was impressed. ’In this day and age, a good-looking man who can cook and lives in the countryside is rare. Watching him cook is like watching a movie scene. ’ She resisted the urge to take a picture and stepped closer for a better look.

Jaden sliced tomatoes and potatoes, prepared the beans, and placed them on a plate. On the windowsill in front of the stove were two flower pots—one with parsley and the other with fresh coriander and garlic. He plucked some parsley and coriander, picked a garlic bulb, washed them, and chopped them for later use. He washed the cucumber again, drained it, and soon had a plate of fresh, appetizing cobb salad ready. He took out forks and plates from the disinfection cabinet and set them on the dining table. "Miss Carter, you can try the cobb salad first," he said.

Luna couldn’t resist the temptation. She thanked him and sat down, taking a bite of the salad. It was refreshing. The organic cucumber, freshly picked, was crisp and sweet, with just the right amount of seasoning to enhance its natural flavor. She felt she could finish two large plates of it. As she ate, she continued to watch Jaden cook.

Jaden cut the eggplant into strips and placed them in a bowl. Then, he took a fish from the glass tank and expertly prepared it with specialized tools. His movements were so agile it was as if he were a professional chef. Luna wondered, ’Could he be a chef?’ He filled a basin with water, added parsley, coriander, and salt, and soaked the fish to remove the fishy smell. Meanwhile, he dried the eggplant, washed it, and began frying it.

By noon, the table was set with fried eggplant, spaghetti, potato soup, fish and chips, and cabbage salad. It was a simple meal of four dishes and a soup, but it looked and smelled delicious. Jaden also served a small pot of strained yogurt he had prepared earlier. "It’s ready. Please feel free to eat," he said, then quietly enjoyed his meal.

Luna scooped a bowl of yogurt and took a sip. It was sweet and fragrant, filling her mouth with its creamy texture. She didn’t say much, eating in silence like Jaden. By the end, they had finished all the food. The meal was light, mostly vegetarian, and wouldn’t cause weight gain. However, no one knew Luna had been suffering from depression and anorexia for over a year. Other than during filming, this was the first time in a long while she had eaten her fill.
