Chapter 114: Dungeons of Memories - The Witch’s Legacy and a Spear’s resolve

"And...did you guys seriously hold back till the last boss to wait for us?"

Celeste’s hoarse throat bled up, worse when she stuffed in two piles of dried, tasteless rations. The Witch and the Dragon hung their shoulders loosely at the sight of Celeste, the former’s eye filled with pity, the latter’s curving in amusement.

For Adrei, this is an excellent assessment of Celeste’s strength, as the daughter of the Witch’s companion.

"Need a rest?"

The Witch, unaware of the scheme that brewed behind her back, leaned in to pat comforting circles. For an instant, the cranky spine reminded her of Celeste’s Father, who a tended to overwork himself.

Well...the Witch smirked at the irony. Now it is she who overworks his child forcefully.

Murmuring a secret apology in her heart, she glanced over Celeste’s shoulder to 991, palm still smoothing Celeste.

"Sorry that you have to keep up with this girl’s antics."

"It’s a passing examination. This Android is...entertained, please do not worry."

991’s gaze swept over the collesium, eyes brimming with curiosity as her sensitivity organs shuddered with a little familiarity. Observation: This Infinite Dungeon was created by the Dwares, the forefathers that the <Motherbrain> has spoken of.

Observation 2: There was a peculiar...excitement welled in her <Core>. She couldn’t wait to dissect every inch of this Dungeon.

"Feeling like you’ve returned home?"

The Witch’s palm left Celeste as she approached 991, before settling on her hooded hair, small brushes of lock jumbling on the sudden care.

"Affirmative..." 991 glanced behind the Witch, the lasting black ashes of the headless horseman. "It is not occupied by us, however."

Observation 3: The Witch was surprisingly sympathetic to those she cared for, even if they only met for less than a few days.

The Android’s head swayed to the Witch’s tender head patting. She enjoyed no motherly warmth from the <Motherbrain>, yet her head remembered her sister’s doting touch upon her hair locks.

Celeste let out a playful giggle before a smack in the shoulder from the Dragon, striding past her.

Is she jealous? Celeste’s eyes glimmered like a girl who found secret drama, but the stimulus dimmed upon finding the smirk on the Dragon’s authoritive expression.

"Seems our wife gave so much care to those she loved, huh?"

With a light-hearted tone, a familiar pair of arms snatched the Witch’s waist again, as 991 tilted her head for the loss of affection.

"Adrei..." The Witch’s feet kicked the air before they hovered a little, the wife’s glare burrowing into the Dragon’s smiling eyes.

"Wouldn’t you agree I also deserve affection for the race I was roped into?"

Scaled arms clasped as the hand slithered up, before the Witch growled.

"You already...had enough." The Witch pinned the arms just below her chest. "Stop teaching the kids the wrong kind of intimacy."

Celeste whipped her head while 991’s neck slightly jolted; both were keenly being educated on a couple’s normality.

"And you claimed you do not savor it?" The Dragon’s cheek nuzzled onto the Witch’s, scaled skin meeting plump cheeks as Demond melted with each grace.

"Savor or not..." The Witch pulled away from the touch, clinging to the last of her dignity as she sighed. "More later. We’ve had our fun. Now’s the time to slowly investigate."

"Indeed, we shall."

The Dragon settled down the Witch, her claw retracted as she brushed off dust from the Witch with practiced ease.

"You know I could’ve used magic to clean, right?" The Witch mumbled, fingers tipping her hat down to hide her blush.

"It’s the cherish that I wish to convey, not the convenience." The Dragon chortled as the Witch rolled her eyes, her blushing cheeks wincing at every touch.

"Hehe..." Celeste sneaked off with creaking steps towards her Android partner, eyes on the prize with how Uncle Demond shivered with roaming hand around the Witch’s robes.

"Hey, 991." Celeste leaned in and whispered, the Android’s ear unmoving before the tickling sensation. "Quite a couple we have here, don’t you think? Isn’t it rare for Uncle Demond to act this embarrassed?"

991 merely observed with a knowing gaze. Unlike a certain youngling who was smirking at the unimaginable sight, the couple’s wet-smacking voice in the carriage was a stern reminder in her ear.

"I would advise not to underestimate the couple’s shamelessness." The Android shuttered her eyes as the Dragon’s hand roamed upwards, the Witch’s surprised shriek piercing her ears.

"Oh-hoh. Right. Based on last night’s performance, I would claim the same as well."

Celeste hoisted her spear as the Android’s neck craned to dodge the sharp tip grazing, the long spear now hanging loosely on her shoulder.

Humming an apology, Celeste squinted again to have a clear visual of the Witch’s assets that bounced with each resistance against the Dragon.

"Hm...didn’t manage to ask, but how did Uncle Demond end up like this?"

"Inconclusive clues. What is this subject asking?" 991 turned to the frowning Celeste.

"You know. The whole turning into a Witch thing." Celeste’s eyes flickered over 991, doubts unanswered, settling weights over her brows.

"I am not aware of Miss Demond’s...history, so I’m naturally unequipped to"

"Ah...right. Of course you didn’t as well..."

Celeste’s head hung, her tone exposing some frustration and regrets, swelling emotional weights that 991 could sense.

"My Father...well, he’s kind of an idiot."

She glanced at the Witch scolding her husband, unaware of her inner turmoil regarding the Witch. "Have you ever heard of the Dragonsong War?"

"A war that lasted decades, one ended by an adventurer’s group named ’the Nameless Wonderers’."

"And here she is, in all her glory."

991’s eyes blinked, shuttering before dragging her gaze to the grumbly Witch being embraced by her Dragon Husband.

"Oh."

"Pft-that’s how you’re gonna react to the Tyrant Slayer?" Celeste’s lips curled up, her waist bending to peek at the Android’s expressionless face.

"The factual calculation that Miss Demond and Miss Adrei were my savior remained unchanged."

The Android’s hand cluttered on the gun’s handle, before examining it with care. The familiar veined magic, signs of dwarven crafts dwelled within the metal, albeit slightly.

"It is I who shouldn’t question, shouldn’t crave for an answer I did not deserve."

"Well, for me, I have lots of questions."

Celeste arched back, the spear swaying with carelessness before grazing against the Android’s coat.

Mumbling another apology, Celeste uttered. "For me, Uncle Demond is... well, an idol, despite how she looked now."

Her starry gaze admired the blushing Witch who was being pinched by the Dragon. "At my lowest point of life, when I knew Uncle Demond was the sole survivor in that final battle, and my Dad...died with valor he once bragged of lacking..."

She clutched her uniform, the linen drifting to the artificial winds conjured by the Infinite Dungeon, just like the day she visited the destroyed Evergreen.

"He...or rather she now, smacked me in the head and ordered me to adventure outwards, to reach where my Father couldn’t."

Celeste’s hand reached out, beckoning for a memory to be forever within her grasp.

"As the sole...survivor of the Waraker Tribe," a relieved smile that eased the knotted heart was lifted. "I must fulfill the spirit of my Forgotten Hero...my father once aspired for."

She glanced over the Witch who nestled into the Dragon’s chest, lips quivering while mouthing complaints, yet the loosened expression belied her satisfaction.

"So, seeing one of the forgotten heroes surviving..."

Celeste’s spear, once flopping with carelessness, completely stilled.

991 sensed Celeste’s will emboldened, her hand grasping and twirling the spear.

An excited smirk notched like a tribe’s sickle on Celeste’s face.

"...feeds me with more delusions of glory hushed by the bards’ tales of terror."

Dellusions...of glory?

991 frowned, her finger sweeping over the wooden handle of her magic revolver.

Glories of the Androids seem ever farther, for the forgotten age of the Androids, for the Android who has forgotten that age.

"Perhaps I’m the same."

The Android held up the revolver, a first crack creaking her expressionlessness.

Her face hunched over the steeled memoir of her fellow sisters. For her sisters’ idealised views, she has submitted her memories, tearing her existence apart by her own will.

"I want to learn more."

And even when the soul was sculpted anew, her Sisters’ smiles that set her mind alight was never shedded away as a junk data.

"I want to know more about myself. About who I was. About who I will be."

Celeste’s eyes glazed over the Android’s brows, knitting together, the first sign of determination since they’d been partnered.

"Then shall you two race again?"

A tease drooled into both’s ears as their gazes united at the strutting Witch ahead, her hands clasping at her back as the Dragon followed.

"Would be a great motivation to start, don’t you think?"

"...that’s cruel, Uncle Demond."

The spear quivered, not in fear but-

"Afraid?" The Dragon’s authoritative steps halted, her eyes curving at Celeste. "I can help with the 10th floor boss that you can’t beat, but...your smirk said otherwise."

"...you’re god damn right."

The trembling Celeste stared back the Android who shrugged. No hints of excitement, but the hoistering of revolvers and the sharp glints of her silvery eyes suggested it is her that lacked focus.

"Alright..."

No need for agreement. Celeste rushed past the couple, the Android’s dashing steps in tow.

Another race was officially on.
