Chapter 165: Don’t Read ❌❌❌❌
When the lights were turned on, the whole building of the Carter Group was silent, with just Sophia working overtime. It was getting close to ten o’clock by the time she approved the initial draft of the bracelet.
Time was not on her side! Sophia rose to her feet and started to gather her things, wanting to leave work immediately.
Her phone rang out of nowhere in the eerily calm building.
Who could have contacted her so late in the night? Sophia pulled out her phone as she walked out of the office.
It was Grace’s video call request.
She then realized that she had not seen Grace in quite some time.
Without delay, she answered the video call, "Mrs. Carter... Alexander?! Why are you the one calling?"
The person that appeared on the screen was Alexander, not Grace.
"Did you not see the text messages I sent you?"
Text messages?
Sophia left the video interface. After that, she discovered that Alexander had truly sent her multiple messages, asking if she could arrange a video call and informing her that his grandma wanted to see her.
However, she was too preoccupied to see the messages sooner.
"Mr. Carter, what’s up? It’s just now that I’m getting home from work. When I was preoccupied, wasn’t it natural that I would miss the messages?"
Immediately after her remarks, she proceeded to the elevator and punched the down button.
"Preoccupied? Are you still in the firm at this time?"
"Indeed, I’ve been working beyond my normal schedule up to this point. When you have an employee like me, you might be secretly pleased as a boss."
Alexander and Bailey returned to the Carter family’s home with smiles on their faces as she worked extra here.
Sophia’s heart sank as she contemplated this.
In the midst of their conversation, the elevator was about to come.
How long had Sophia been working overtime? How was she still in the company?
At ten o’clock, the Carter Group’s building would lose electricity for maintenance, and Alexander realized that it was nearly 10 o’clock.
Fuck!
Alexander’s eyebrows furrowed and he said, "Sophia! Listen to me! Don’t go in the elevator at this time."
It was nevertheless too late for him to say so.
The elevator arrived.
And Sophia walked inside it.
"What was that?"
Sophia failed to hear what Alexander had just said. When she turned her head again, the elevator door had closed and it had begun to descend.
A few stories down, the elevator froze and would not go again. The surroundings were engulfed in darkness.
"The hell!"
Sophia screamed as a result of her being startled by the sudden darkness. Her legs began to tremble as a result of her terror. She squatted down while holding her head. Even her phone tumbled to the floor after slipping from her grasp.
The video chat on the phone abruptly ended due to a lack of reception.
What has gone wrong?
Sophia had no idea what was happening. With little light to guide her, she strained to locate her phone on the floor.
She carefully stood up with her back against the elevator wall after swiftly turning on the flashlight on her cell phone.
Sophia spotted the notification of a power outage and maintenance on the elevator wall in the low light of her cell phone. According to the notice, the electricity would be turned off for maintenance from 10:00 p.m. tonight to 6:00 a.m. in the morning.
The last clause was highlighted in red.
"Don’t use the elevator within the designated time period."
The sight of it left Sophia in a state of disbelief. She could not refrain from cursing, "Fuck this! Why didn’t you install a caution sign in front of the elevator?"
Who in the devil placed that notice inside? Didn’t they realize that such an essential notification needed to be displayed outside the elevator for everybody to see?
As soon as she had stepped inside the elevator, warnings were of no use anymore.
In a fit of hysteria, the elevator went down as soon as she finished cursing.
"God!" Sophia let out another scream.
Now she was really scared.
"Sophia! Sophia! Sophia!"
Alexander couldn’t get through to Sophia when the video conversation was abruptly cut off.
Beep! Beep!
Damn! Sophia was still in the firm. Clearly, she was in danger.
Fear gripped Alexander as he clutched his phone desperately.
"Alexander, what’s the matter?"
Grace, too, noticed something was amiss when she saw her grandson’s pale face.
"Grandma, there’s a chance Sophia’s in danger. I’m going to the company right now to look for her."
When Alexander finished speaking, he dashed out of the door like a wind gust.
’Sophia, hang on... I’ll be right there.’
Under the gloomy night sky, a silver sports car streaked through the roads. All the other cars hurried and swerved out of the way for fear of bumping into the lunatic who was speeding a luxury car through the city center.
That lunatic was none other than Alexander.
The moment he found out that something had happened to Sophia, he immediately got into his car and raced to the company.
On the way, he kept dialing Sophia’s number, only to be met with the same cold busy tone.
Alexander felt as if his heart was being grilled on a fire.
He silently prayed that Sophia could have the strength to hold on until she was found. She had to stay safe until then.
The moment Alexander arrived at the company, he saw Ace waiting anxiously for him downstairs at the entrance of the building. Ace had already gotten a call from Alexander earlier, asking him to get some firefighters to open the door.
Alexander got out of the car and began striding towards Ace in one swift motion. "How’s it going?"
The two of them entered the building together. Inside, the space was shrouded in pitch black darkness.
"Why are the lights off?" Alexander asked anxiously.
"Mr. Carter, the building is under maintenance, so power can’t be restored for the time being. We can only get someone to launch the emergency power. But..."
Ace paused hesitantly, going pale.
"But what?" Alexander’s eyes narrowed. He could feel his heart leap to his throat.
"If we launch the emergency power, the elevator will either rise or fall rapidly. We have to get Sophia out first, but..."
"Just spit it out. What’s the problem?" Alexander was skirting on the edge of losing his temper.
"Mr. Carter, we still haven’t been able to identify which floor Sophia is on yet."
Ace lowered his head, feeling guilty.
"Then let’s search floor by floor."
Alexander clenched his fists and stood straight like a mountain, without the slightest hint of trembling.
Ace had been awed by Alexander’s unassailable demeanor countless times, but now, he felt like Alexander was bravely standing his ground on the edge of a cliff even though one wrong step would lead to his fall in an abyss.
Without the slightest fear or hesitation, Alexander followed the rescue team into the elevator shaft and searched floor by floor.
"Sophia! Sophia!"
She was not on this floor, nor was she on the next...
Every single time, Alexander’s hopes rose only to crash back down again.
’Where on earth is Sophia? Is she hurt?’
Alexander desperately shouted her name again and again, but there was no response. In the quiet corridor, the only thing he could hear was his breath getting heavier and heavier. He felt like he had
fallen into a sinkhole, grasping at a branch to hold onto.
Panic surged through Alexander like a tide, suffocating him. This was the first time in his life that he had truly felt fear. He was afraid of losing Sophia like this.
Meanwhile, in the stuffy elevator, a petite figure was curled up on the floor.
The elevator had jerked to a sudden stop and been stuck at this place ever since.
In the dark, infinite fear overwhelmed Sophia. All the news headlines about elevator accidents she had seen flooded her mind at once.
’Am I going to die here?’
At that thought, a terrible chill rose in her heart, and she hugged herself tightly.
In her wild panic, she began to make blind and disorderly conjectures. If she died, what would happen to Alexa and Axel?
Sophia couldn’t imagine how the children would react when they saw her dead body.
’No way! I can’t die like this. I should at least... leave something for my loved ones.’
Sophia hadn’t dared to turn on her phone before, because it was dangerously close to running out of battery, but at this moment, she finally took it out. These could be the last moments of her life. She had to hurry up and use them wisely. At the very least, she wanted to record... her last words.
"Alexa and Axel, when you hear this recording, I might have left you. But don’t be sad for too long. Remember to grow up happily and do everything you like. I won’t ask you to become rich or powerful. All I want for you is to be safe, happy, and healthy. Cora, don’t cry too hard. You are the one I trust most in this world. I know that you’ll take good care of my two children. I will bless you all the time in heaven. And... Liam, I shouldn’t have been so mean to you. You are a good man."
At this point, the battery on Sophia’s phone had almost run out. There were only a few important people in Sophia’s life, and she had addressed all of them...except one.
Alexander.
At the thought of him, a bittersweet feeling came over Sophia. Now, under the premise that she would die in this elevator, all the feelings that she had suppressed until now exploded to the surface.
"Alexander, I have something to tell you. I..."
Just as Sophia began speaking, a familiar voice shouted from above.
"Sophia!"
Hearing that, Sophia frowned. Was she so absorbed in her thoughts of Alexander that she was now even hearing his voice?
"Sophia! I heard your voice. Save your energy. Don’t talk nonsense at this time."
This time, Sophia knew that she wasn’t just imagining things. Alexander was here!
