Chapter 51: Chapter 48: Just do good deeds, don’t ask about the future
Suddenly, there was a tremor from the mountain.
The altar at the mountain’s peak began to collapse, with numerous stones tumbling down.
Qin Zhao wasted no more words with Chu Yan, pulling him quickly down the mountain to avoid being buried should the tremor worsen.
Back in the village, Su Xiaotong and the other two were waiting by the car.
The village had more lights and the barking of farm dogs.
Shen Dongdong had killed some of the villagers, but all the disabled people were alive and well, having previously been invisible because they were caught in an array set up by Shen Dongdong.
Qin Zhao sat in the passenger seat, and Chu Yan drove as they left under the cover of night.
Through the dim light, they could see disabled people seated at wooden tables, diligently assembling small toys.
These items were their only source of income.
"We need to finish assembling these quickly tonight, Old Shen said he’s coming to pick up the goods tomorrow."
"Old Shen is such a good person, he even paid us our wages in advance before we finished the work."
"Yes, unlike other unscrupulous bosses who always delay our pay knowing we have disabilities."
The conversation between a disabled couple reached their ears, their child, a normal person only knee-high, was very sensible and squatted next to his parents, helping them with the handwork.
When the car reached the village entrance, Li Zhen and the others had just cleared away the earth blocking the road.
"Xiao Tong, are you okay?"
"It’s really great you’re alright, we were all very worried about you."
Seeing Su Xiaotong on the car, the others couldn’t help but be surprised.
Su Xiaotong did not speak; her gaze landed on Pei Rou standing behind the crowd, looking a bit displeased.
She had wanted to save Pei Rou because she had the peace charm given by Qin Zhao, but Pei Rou had pushed her out in her hurry to escape.
Though Pei Rou’s character was not admirable, she was still a human life, and Su Xiaotong could not just stand by and watch her die.
But now, reflecting on it, no matter how ugly the evil ghost was, nothing gave her the chills like that venomous human heart.
Some people were simply not worth saving!
After everyone departed by car, it took over an hour to reach the county town.
Finding a grand hotel to stay in, they finally relaxed.
The next day, most hurriedly booked plane tickets to leave.
Pei Rou and Lou Yanfei terminated their contracts with the production crew, preferring to pay a penalty rather than continue participating in the filming.
This ordeal had left everyone with psychological scars.
Li Zhen also lost the will to prepare for the shooting; after all, several people had died, and as the head director, he had to deal with inquiries from the company and the investigating police.
Qin Zhao stayed a few more days in the county town and visited the local Red Cross with Su Xiaotong.
"I’d like to donate to the disabled people of Mang Mountain and hope you can assist in building a factory where they can work to support local economic development."
Qin Zhao had made a good amount of money. After paying off her debts, she still had six million left.
Then, Li Zhen’s variety show was scrapped, but Qin Zhao didn’t break the contract unilaterally; instead, Li Zhen had to compensate her with about two million.
"There are eight million in this card."
The staff pulled up the data for Mang Mountain, "All right, I’ll make a note of it. Our personnel will arrange the follow-up, and you can come to check the progress at any time."
"Here’s five hundred thousand, I want to donate too."
After Qin Zhao explained the situation to Su Xiaotong, seeing Qin Zhao donate to help the disabled moved her to take out most of her savings too.
The medical team had not left yet and were staying at the hotel.
Chu Yan held an emergency meeting to plan the construction of a branch hospital on Mang Mountain, with the resident doctors and nurses eligible for triple salaries.
Once the hospital was completed, severely ill disabled patients could be transferred to Imperial Hospital for free treatment.
Of course, all this was to come later.
After a busy week, they finally returned to Imperial City.
"Dr. Chu, Miss Xu in ward 209 wants to see you."
Upon hearing the nurse’s words, Chu Yan’s expression paused for a moment, "Understood."
A short while later, he arrived at Xu Zhiwei’s ward.
Xu Zhiwei had been sick since she was little, frail in stature, but with beautiful features and a gentle temperament.
The Xu family was wealthy, and she was staying in a high-class hospital room; even her patient gown was different from the others, seemingly made of silk, accentuating her refined demeanor. Seeing Chu Yan approach, Xu Zhiwei gathered her long hair with her hand.
With a faint smile, she said, "Dr. Chu, you’ve saved me several times now. Each time, it’s you who have pulled me back from death’s door. If it weren’t for everyone saying I won’t live past twenty-five, I would sincerely like to repay you with my gratitude."
"I am a doctor, this is my duty. Even if the person collapsing in front of me were a beggar, I would do my best to treat them."
Chu Yan’s expression remained indifferent, his handsome face still retaining that cool, noble air, making him seem unapproachably lofty, like a deity on a mountain peak.
Xu Zhiwei frowned slightly upon hearing this.
With a smile tinged with self-deprecation, she said, "Comparing me to a beggar is really quite saddening. I don’t think I’ve fallen that low, have I?"
Chu Yan didn’t respond, merely looking at her coldly.
Xu Zhiwei paused, then added, "I don’t think you’re looking down on me, you’re trying to say that you treat all patients equally, right?"
"I do not look down on my patients."
Some patients become particularly vulnerable and suspicious when they realize death is approaching, fearing to be seen as a burden.
But, Chu Yan wasn’t any relative of Xu Zhiwei.
Even as her attending physician, he wasn’t one for offering consolation.
"If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave now."
Assuming Xu Zhiwei had some discomfort, Chu Yan didn’t want to linger after such idle talk.
As he turned and reached for the door to leave, he collided with someone.
"Chu Yan?"
The person exclaimed in surprise and then displayed evident distaste.
"What are you doing here?"
Chu Yan didn’t answer, giving him a blank look before walking past him.
"Uncle."
Xu Zhiwei called out to him; this was Xu Cheng, her father’s younger brother from the Xu family.
"I heard you were hospitalized again, so I rushed back from out of town to see you."
Xu Cheng cheerily entered with a bunch of stuff, "Ah, being hospitalized so frequently, it’s really tough on our Weiwei."
Upon remembering the person he had just bumped into, his smile dimmed.
"Why is Chu Yan in your ward?"
Xu Zhiwei looked surprised. "He’s my new attending physician; he’s brought me back from death’s door several times. Uncle, how do you know Dr. Chu?"
Xu Cheng’s expression turned complex, "Does your dad know about this?"
"Yes, of course."
"He knows and he still lets Chu Yan treat you?" Xu Cheng’s voice suddenly rose, "How can that be reassuring! Chu Yan is nothing but a dog raised by your aunt’s family, a dog that might bite, your father is really too careless!"
Hearing Xu Cheng insult Chu Yan, Xu Zhiwei’s expression darkened.
"Uncle, please don’t speak of him like that."
"Did I say something wrong? It was because of him that your aunt’s family was turned upside-down back then! At eighteen, he sued your uncle, nearly leading to his dismissal!
If it hadn’t been for that incident, your uncle would have been president long ago, there would have been no need to toil for so many more years!"
Xu Zhiwei’s face went pale, "He, he’s that illegitimate son of my uncle?"
Xu Cheng scoffed, which was confirmation enough.
To call him illegitimate wasn’t quite accurate, as it was his sister who was the newcomer. But his sister was the daughter of the Xu family, not someone that Chu Yan’s rural mother could compare to.
In the eyes of Imperial City’s elite, Xu Cheng’s sister naturally was Mr. Lu’s rightful wife. Therefore, in everyone’s eyes, Chu Yan became the illegitimate child.
