Chapter 82: Defying Death
The Raven Court
Logi sat at the top of the platform, his eyes scanning for a particular person—as he took the final bite of his apple, discarding the leftover behind him.
It was the last day of the third challenge and the uncrowned warriors would be coming through their tunnels soon.
From this place he could feel the earth vibrate from the ravenites’ cheers, they were always so worked up on the Hunt every season.
Logi’s sharp green eyes found Kraven emerging from the darkness and a smirk found his lips.
Without hesitation, he leaped from the height, landing flawlessly. He pressed his bandaged hand against the wall for balance, but a sharp jolt of pain shot through him, making him curse under his breath.
Kraven threw a look over his broad shoulder before facing ahead and continuing his stride back to the arena.
Logi scoffed and rushed to walk by him. "So..." he began, passing a look at the Fae who had a presence identical to the god of death. "I’ve got a feeling she’s not dead."
"Hmm, how so?"
Logi frowned, noticing how off-putting Kraven was, it was unusual not to see him with his usual amusement. Was something bothering him?
Logi rubbed his chin and said. "Because I know you can feel it through the mate bond no matter how weak it is."
He got silence as a reply, yet he continued anyway, eager to get to the point, just the mere thought of being one step ahead caused a thrill to run through him.
"The Eating Woods is a no Faes land and also perfect for hunting weeds." He glared at Kraven’s side profile. "I thought we had a rule... no interfering in the Hunt."
This finally seemed to catch Kraven’s attention, a smile pressed on his lips.
"How did you find out?"
"Oh please I introduced this system, I know when there are bugs in my creation."
Kraven halted his steps and faced Logi with a raised eyebrow.
"A very powerful bug," Logi added. "She might have lived through this one but the last will be her death, she’s still a weakness."
"Maybe," Kraven replied. "A weakness still alive after life-threatening events without my involvement."
Logi chewed the inside of his mouth. "You know she’ll always be one no matter how you push her for survival, she’ll break." He must applaud her for her resilience but that doesn’t change her role.
"I’m looking forward to that," Kraven replied, with a thoughtful expression before continuing his walk.
"I know the seals don’t work anymore."
Kraven halted his steps.
"Should I be worried you’ll bury this place alive? After all... the thirst will get stronger."
"I’ll start with you first."
"Alda! Kraven, are you still angry with me? I only did what I needed because you kept a secret from me."
"It’s not much of a secret now you know, you’re a pest, Logi."
"If she so much as weakens your strength or makes you stray from the path..." he pointed, gulping, as he said his next words. "I’ll kill her myself!"
An uncomfortable silence passed between them and for a moment, Logi felt a pressure on his throat like it had been cut open by a sword.
However, Kraven remained like a statue, his shadow stretched unnaturally, yet it did not move—only the sensation lingering in the air, like a fresh scent of death.
In silence, Kraven walked through the doors leaving Logi behind.
Logi drew sharply on his breath, placing his hands on his waist. Maybe that was a poor judgment on his part, but he meant what he said.
It was unlike Kraven to interfere with the hunt and that was cheating the wager.
"You should know, Kraven, I don’t lose easily," he said before walking through the large opened doors where the thunderous cheers erupted from.
The crowd was more lively than ever awaiting the uncrowned warriors.
Logi’s eyes veered to Rav on his seat and a chuckle broke from him. "It’s nice to have you back, Rav, what happened? No longer overcome by grief?"
His fist clenching the armrest told him he might have gone too far with that one. but Rav replied regardless.
"As a commander, I must be here to welcome the warriors," he replied, with an indifferent tone.
"It’s good you’re here, Rav," Nyssa said with a smile on her lips and Rav just forced one back in return.
"Chin up Rav, there is no need to look so depressed," Logi said, taking his seat.
"They are taking time."
"Ah yes, compared to other challenges... This is very hard. I’ve no hand in its creations but I must say the Eating Woods offers more beautiful death traps and the Bone eaters feed on the bones of Faes."
A chill shot up Nyssa’s spine. "Nasty creatures."
"Indeed, which is why working together is crucial in this stage, it will build their ability to harmonize as well as show who the weeds are..." Logi said, keeping his eyes on Kraven standing tall near the ledge.
"I’m truly looking forward to the faces of those who’ll make it to the finals, I’m sure you two will be pleased."
Rav and Nyssa turned to him with confused expressions.
Where the curtains danced behind the entrance of the grandstand, Ekko appeared, letting his eyes take in the view. He had long awaited to see this prey that had got his master so consumed.
The loud sound of stones rolling open echoed through the air and the cheers got deafening.
The uncrowned warriors made it to the pit, battered and bruised.
Rav was the first to rise to his feet when his eyes caught a familiar glimpse of golden blonde covered in dirt.
Nyssa’s expression morphed into shock as her nails dug into the stone armrest. ’How is she still alive?’
Isadora limped to the middle, her arm around Vanya’s neck to help her through. Her other hand held the two flags—as proof she had passed the second and third challenges.
"They are still alive, how is that possible?" someone whispered to Dain.
"Shut up!" he snapped, irritated, keeping his eyes on the two maidens that should be dead but looked very much alive.
"Just raise the fucking flag."
