Chapter 44: The Girl Who Defiled The Odds

(Music Recommendation: No Turning back - By Olivier Deriviere, Eric Maria Couturier)

What was this?! What was unfolding before his eyes, leaving him completely speechless?

He couldn’t understand this—why was she here again? She had been deeply wounded the last time, and yet here she was again, trying to run the Spine. Was she insane?

By the Olden gods! This shouldn’t be possible!

’I cannot understand her,’ Logi thought with a deep frown, watching the entire display from the top of the tower, and just as he had predicted she couldn’t get past the first obstacle and was lucky enough to fall on the ground rather than falling to her death—much to his disappointment.

Irritated by her behaviour, he stormed off the training grounds in anger.

On the third day, she was there again, like nothing had happened.

Confusion took over him to the point where he couldn’t bear to watch any longer. She kept failing, each attempt more pitiful than the last.

Anyone who had failed for three days straight would have walked away by now, but there she was, stubborn and trying again.

’She will fail again!’ he thought certainly, turning to leave, hoping he wouldn’t see her the next day.

But she proved him wrong—she was there again, aiming toward the impossible.

This time Logi took the liberty to ask the infirmary if a particular person had come to get fixed but they gave him confused looks and their answer was... no.

Logi assumed the possibility of her being a skin weaver but that was also not a possibility... because skin weavers cannot fix themselves.

Today he will get his answer and find out why this mannfae had the audacity to defile the odds.

As usual, the log slammed into her, knocking her off the bridge.

"Almadra!" he exclaimed to the Allmother. She always seemed to fall to her left, every single time, like she had intentionally directed her body toward that angle.

Isadora sat on the ground, holding her wounded leg. Her knee peeled off and blood oozed out.

Her expression toward the injury was even more disturbing for Logi but what shook him to the core was when she moved her hands and fixed the wound, it didn’t take up to a second as the wound closed completely like it had never been there before.

He staggered backward, his features painted in shock. Following her movement, she climbed back up the ladder to resume her mission—practically throwing herself into doom, only to rise from the ashes and dive back in again.

Weeks passed and Isadora succeeded in passing the swinging pendulum, studying the motion of each swing finally paid off.

She was able to calculate when it slowed down enough for her to safely guide through it. Smirking toward her victory she faced the next challenge.

The whirling planks: There were six of them, whirling dangerously. They had no bridge which was a relief but what caused her pulse to quicken was the lack of ropes for support.

This was going to prove more intense to handle.

She gulped loudly at what awaits her. ’Too late to turn back down now’ she thought determined, her wrist quivering because of how much she overused her healing abilities.

She had never pushed herself this far, and the fatigue was quickly catching up to her.

But she wasn’t letting that stop her from accomplishing her goal. She would prove them wrong, show them that they can’t predict the outcome of her actions, and get back at them for humiliating her.

Taking a deep breath she closed her eyes briefly. There was a way, she could tell, after she passed the swinging pendulum there was a technique to this device. The designs were impeccable but nothing can be completely perfect.

Full-blooded Fae thought they were all perfect when it came to everything, they pride themselves in that knowledge because they are exalted creations of the olden gods.

However, Isadora didn’t grow up to be perfect or pride herself in anything, it was easy to see the flaws.

In speed, Isadora launched toward it, the swaying bridge no longer an obstacle—she became one with it, allowing the swinging disaster to be her guide.

With a stomp, she jumped and landed on the whirling planks, unbalanced, her body waving toward the edge of the cliff.

Her widened eyes took in her possible death. But she growled, stomping her balance back, twirling like the wind to the other planks.

A breathless smile curved her lips, and suddenly she felt as light as a leaf. Even when her balance faltered, she surrendered to the wind completely, letting it guide her through.

As swift as the breeze, she overcame the second obstacle.

The third challenge—the slicing pillars: They consisted of narrow gaps with spinning blades.

"Okay, deep breaths, deep breaths" she encouraged, just as she thought earlier there was no going back now. It would be a shame if she lost.

She took some time to observe the blade’s spiral. ’Find it, find the flaw!’ She thought, narrowing her eyes, compared to others it was harder to tell.

But the moment her eyes landed on the ropes a plan got to her—A very bad one.

But this was the only way, the slicing pillars were constructed to stay in one position, unlike the first obstacle.

’This has to work’ she thought determined and hopeful, silently praying to the gods.

Without thinking further, she charged forward to execute her plan. Instead of following through the middle, she veered to the side, heading for the edge of the cliff. Gripping the ropes tightly, she took a sharp breath and jumped.

’What?’ Logi thought, startled the moment she did such a craziest thing ever.

Not only had she mocked his construction but now she had a death sentence. What could she possibly be thinking right now? That angle may be a blindspot but it was too narrow.

He rushed to the other side of the tower, squinting his eyes to see better.

’Almadra!’
