Chapter 42: The Warrior’s Path Is A Path Of Blood

At the top of a tower, Logi observed the ruckus—laughing, a dice rotating between his fingers.

"I must admit she has speed, too bad she doesn’t have agility"

Logi turned to the boy with a frown suddenly carved on his features. "Shouldn’t you be off doing something else?"

He hated to admit it but the boy was right, that was the first thing Logi noticed and for a split second, he thought she would pass the first obstacle.

"I’m free of chores—besides this is way more fun to watch. No one has caused a stir like this" The boy grinned smugly, revealing two missing teeth.

"Whatever" Logi waved his hand dismissively.

"How’s your hand? The skin weaver did a good job right?" he asked worriedly as he stared at his bandaged right hand.

The way Logi clenched it close to his chest told him he still felt the pain despite having it fixed.

"I’m fine, Cai," he replied, distractedly.

Cai sighed. "Does this mean you won’t be able to build again?"

"Time will tell, the gods will decide"

"Too bad" he placed a hand on his cheek, clicking his tongue in pity. "You’ll be useless"

Logi glared at him. "I still have this," he pointed to his brain. "I’m a child of Visindi" he boasted about the god of wisdom. "And I’m not second in command because I can use my hands"

"Tsk Tsk! You mean third in command,"

"Get lost," he threatened. "Or I throw you off"

Cai broke into a pearl of laughter—rolling the wheels of his chair backward.

"Get me an apple while you’re at it"

"Logi"

"What?" he growled, not wanting to be distracted again.

"What do you think of the stray?"

Logi turned back his gaze to Isadora in Rav’s arms as he led her away. "She won’t last,"

Cai scoffed and Logi faced him. "And what do you have to say?"

The boy smirked. "I doubt it because I’ve never seen you interested in anyone. That means there’s something about her"

"Get going, before I really throw you off"

He chuckled to himself rolling his wheels to the makeshift lift and pulling a lever to take him down.

Logi turned back to the retreating form of Rav and Isadora, his teeth clenched at the memories of that night and his hand ached in pain too.

"If you knew what I did you wouldn’t think like that" he mumbled. "She’s a weakness that has to go"

~♧~

"Ready?" Rav asked.

Isadora nodded stiffly awaiting the pain, with a swift jolt her bone was set back in place. She groaned as the pain exploded all through her like a shocking wave.

For a second it was hard to breathe until she released a sharp exhale.

"Don’t heal the rest" he instructed.

"Why?" she asked with wide eyes, staying with this kind of pain will be the death of her.

"They know you’re a weaver not which one, and skin weavers can’t heal themselves"

Isadora stared at him confused. ’What does he mean by skin weavers can’t heal themselves?’

"Only you can do that" he added remembering during their journey when she slipped at a crossing and got a cut.

Right before his and Kraven’s eyes, she healed herself like it was nothing.

Skin weavers are mostly known to attend to others and not themselves.

That was the moment Kraven specifically ordered that her abilities should be kept in the shade. Rav didn’t completely understand why then but now it was a perfect leverage for her.

"I-I didn’t know that" she confessed.

"That is how special your ability is. Keep it a secret, if... Nyssa knows she would use this as an opportunity to make you suffer more"

Her pulse quickened at the thought and yet she couldn’t shake that feeling consuming her inwardly.

The mocking look of satisfaction on Nyssa’s face and the look of the others as she walked away with Rav.

They reminded her of how her family and Dashwell used to look at her. How Kraven looked at her and deemed her unworthy of an opponent.

It ate her up inside.

"It doesn’t feel right," she murmured.

"What do you mean?"

"To feel weak, to be weak"

Rav sighed heavily, understanding her thoughts. He knew it must be hard for her. The distant look in her eyes and the pain within them were unmistakable.

Yet, he also knew it was the only way she would survive.

"This is the only way, Isadora, this is not a life for you, to be a warrior, perhaps stay here and keep your head down" he pleaded.

He knew Kraven would have his objections but when he awakens and sees that Isadora didn’t meet his expectations the sick plan he had in store for her would die off.

"What does it mean to be a warrior?" Isadora suddenly asked, curiosity fueling her gaze.

Rav scratched the back of his head. "It’s hard to explain when you ask me that," he chuckled. "And I thought you saw us mostly as criminals and wanted nothing to do with us" he jested.

Isadora blushed—she admitted she did, yet seeing their training regiments, she couldn’t help but wonder if that’s how criminals train? Unless she wouldn’t know how any warrior trains but there was something about it—the grit, their ways.

It was hard to explain.

However she knew one thing... It spiked her interests.

"Don’t think too much about it, alright?"

"Earlier, I thought they looked at me because of my ears, the look in their eyes as they deemed me unworthy" she began in a heavy tone. "But looking at it now I think they didn’t because of that," she added strangely, feeling her ears briefly.

A frown found Isadora’s features, it was strange because her entire life was repulsion because of her impure blood but it wasn’t the case here, they were guarded against her because of something else. What?

"Get some rest Isadora, when Nyssa comes I’ll tell her you’re yet to heal after getting fixed, I think that’d be enough to convince her" he rose to his feet but paused before he left, thinking deeply about the question she asked him he said.

"A warrior’s path is a path of blood. The bloodied path is not your fate" he said softly. "You deserve anything other than that."
