Chapter 1448: 708 Two Little Bao Buns (Second Update)
At night, Gu Chengfeng paid a visit.
He’d show up whenever he had nothing pressing, and in the five days Gu Jiao and Gu Yan lived at the National Master Hall, he’d already come three times, only to miss them each time.
Finally, not tonight.
Everyone at home had already retired to bed, the door bolt locked; he had to climb the wall to get in—almost getting himself skewered by Gu Jiao’s spear.
Staring at the red-tasseled spear half an inch from his chest, Gu Chengfeng swallowed hard and said, “No way, you don’t sleep in the middle of the night?”
Gu Jiao put away the spear and walked back to the main room, asking indifferently, “What brings you here so late?”
“You think I wanted to come over?” Gu Chengfeng snorted, massaging his nearly startled heart as he entered the room as if nothing had happened.
He glanced at the partially closed doors of the rooms and whispered, “Everyone’s asleep? How come so early? The Opera House’s business is just picking up.”
Gu Jiao sat down in a chair beside the Eight Immortals table, “Then why did you come?”
“I don’t perform every day.” Performing every day would mean scripts advancing too quickly, and he’d run out of material to sing.
Ah, he really regretted not reading a few more scripts written by the old libationer back then.
It’s only at times of need that one realizes what they lack—he had finally understood this truth.
“Did Gu Yan’s surgery go smoothly?” Gu Chengfeng asked seriously as he sat down in the chair opposite Gu Jiao, “Just for the record, I’m not asking because I care, I’m asking for Xiao Hen.”
“It went smoothly,” Gu Jiao said.
“Really?” Gu Chengfeng’s eyes lit up.
Gu Jiao: Didn’t you say you didn’t care yourself?
“Mhm,” Gu Jiao nodded, “You can check on him yourself if you want, but he might be asleep right now.”
Gu Chengfeng’s gaze flickered, he picked up the teapot and poured himself a cup, sipping the tea as he said, “What’s there to see?”
Even so, his eyes kept darting to the room where Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun were.
“Any news from my husband’s side?”
“What news could there be? He’s being watched by the Han Family, he’s being very cautious and has barely left the house recently.”
It’s a good thing they had an eagle to pass messages between them.
“So Gu Yan won’t have a relapse in the future, right? He’s truly cured?”
“He shouldn’t relapse.”
“What do you mean he shouldn’t?”
“As a doctor, I have to speak cautiously.”
Gu Chengfeng: “…”
“Last time, Gu Xiaoshun said he wanted to try our Opera House’s pastries—I brought some. I’ll take them to him!”
With that, he got up and walked leisurely into Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun’s room.
The weather was hot and stuffy, windows and doors were open; they had originally prepared mosquito coils, but Gu Yan couldn’t sleep with the smell, so they had to settle for a mosquito net instead.
Gu Chengfeng’s aura changed as soon as he entered the room, tiptoeing to the bedside with a box of pastries in one hand, quietly unclipping the mosquito net, and inserting his head through the gap.
He then came face-to-face with a face, topped with a tuft of hair sticking up as if it were flying, eyes calm yet severe.
With a yelp, Gu Chengfeng tumbled to the floor.
Was it really that scary?
Pushing aside a mosquito net to reveal a head—it was like seeing a ghost!
“Weren’t you asleep?” Gu Chengfeng stood up, brushing the dust off his trousers.
Now it was Gu Yan sticking his head out from the gap in the net, gripping it tightly; otherwise, mosquitoes would get in.
It looked even more terrifying.
Like a head just sprouting from the mosquito net, bathed in the moon’s eerie white light.
If Gu Yan hadn’t been so adorable, Gu Chengfeng might have followed his survival instincts and kicked it.
Gu Yan said innocently, “I did sleep, but I didn’t fall asleep.”
Gu Chengfeng: “…”
Gu Yan noticed the box in his hand, which he had kept from hitting the floor during his fall, clutching it carefully; Gu Yan couldn’t help but ask, “What’s in the box?”
“Pastries! I bought them for Gu Xiaoshun!” Gu Chengfeng said nonchalantly, passing the box over.
Gu Yan didn’t accept it, instead saying, “There are too many mosquitoes. Open it, let me see.”
Gu Chengfeng opened the box, revealing a layer of tempting Crab Yellow Crisps.
“Gu Xiaoshun doesn’t like these,” Gu Yan stated.
Gu Chengfeng cleared his throat, stating indifferently, “If he doesn’t eat them, you can have them.”
Gu Yan said, “But I don’t like them either.”
Gu Chengfeng instantly bristled, “Last time, didn’t you say you loved Crab Yellow Crisps? Do you have any idea the Opera House hasn’t made these in eight hundred years? I went to great lengths just to coax the chef back!”
“Oh,” Gu Yan cocked his head and said, “So you brought them for me.”
