Chapter 1048: 505 The truth comes to light (second update)_2 Chapter 1048: 505 The truth comes to light (second update)_2 “It couldn’t have been to see his grandfather.”
This girl wasn’t from the Gu Family.
Gu Jiao raised an eyebrow and said, “I’m here to see my brother!”
“Ha, your brother is at the Governor’s Mansion?” Gu Chengfeng was amused by Gu Jiao, her knack for telling tall tales seemed to have grown stronger still. He used to actually believe her story about going north to save her brother and some foolish guy.
However, after spending so much time together, not to mention a brother or a fool, he hadn’t even seen a hair of theirs!
In his opinion, this girl was simply lying!
“He is indeed here.” Gu Jiao spoke seriously.
“Oh.” Gu Chengfeng chuckled, “Then who is your brother? Point him out.”
Gu Jiao thought for a moment and said, “I’m afraid it would scare you to death.”
“Blow away, keep blowing. Scare me to death? Unless your brother is my grandfather, even Tang Yueshan can’t scare me!”
“Did you call me?”
Tang Yueshan’s voice suddenly appeared from behind Gu Chengfeng’s stretcher.
“Damn!” Gu Chengfeng jumped with a start and tumbled straight off the stretcher!
He looked at Tang Yueshan in a disheveled state: “Why are you here?”
Has he seen a ghost in broad daylight?
“Speak of the devil, and he shall appear” wasn’t supposed to be like this!
Tang Yueshan said irritably, “You can be moved here, and I can’t come?”
It wasn’t really that he wanted to come. The first-aid station was too crowded. Allocation to the Governor’s Mansion wasn’t based on status, but on the extent of injuries, and Tang Yueshan and Gu Chengfeng just happened to fall into the category of severely wounded yet stable enough to be moved.
Gu Chengfeng snorted, “You’re here, fine, but did you have to be put in the same courtyard as me?”
Tang Yueshan said in exasperation, “What about the same courtyard? It’s not like we’re in the same room!”
“You’re in the same ward.” The accompanying physician, looking at the roster in his hand, said expressionlessly.
The two of them: “…”
Gu Chengfeng and Tang Yueshan were carried into the room next to the old marquis.
On the battlefield, the two had fought side by side and supported each other. But off the battlefield, they had no friendship whatsoever. Gu Chengfeng disliked Tang Yueshan, and Tang Yueshan looked down on Gu Chengfeng.
Neither of them could stand the sight of the other.
By comparison, Tang Yueshan found Gu Jiao’s presence even more agreeable.
Gu Jiao said to the accompanying physician, “Leave it to me here, go take care of other things.”
“Yes, Doctor Gu.”
The accompanying physician went to attend to other patients.
Originally, the room only had one arhat bed. With the addition of new patients, another bed was added. Tang Yueshan was not picky about the bed whereas Gu Chengfeng successfully commandeered the spacious arhat bed.
Tang Yueshan’s small bamboo bed was right against the wall, next to the old marquis.
Originally, the two rooms were one, separated later only by a wall panel made of pear blossom wood.
Therefore, the sound insulation was bound to be somewhat lacking.
He could hear the sounds from next door.
Although Tang Yueshan wasn’t exactly a gentleman of great virtue, he was also no thief in the night. He swore he wasn’t eavesdropping intentionally.
As Tang Yueshan listened, his expression began to change.
Gu Chengfeng occasionally glared at Tang Yueshan, and upon the umpteenth time he looked over, he caught the oddity in Tang Yueshan.
What was this guy doing?
His ear was so close to the wall… Could he be eavesdropping?
Next door was his grandfather, and Tang Yueshan was shameless, eavesdropping on the old man’s corner!
He wanted to listen too!
When Gu Jiao took two thermometers out of the first-aid kit, she turned around to see two big men, who couldn’t get along, sitting together on the small bamboo bed, their ears pressed tightly against the wall.
Gu Jiao: Sigh, you guys are really…
Not even calling me.
After a while, three ears were all stuck to the wall.
In the next room, the old marquis had just woken up. His consciousness had returned, but not his martial skills, so he didn’t notice that someone was eavesdropping.
Although Gu Changqing did sense someone next door, he assumed it was Gu Jiao and didn’t pay much heed.
The old marquis couldn’t help but cough for a while, and Gu Changqing handed him a cup of hot water.
The old marquis took it, glanced at Gu Changqing who steadfastly avoided his gaze, and with a heavy heart he sighed, “Are you still holding a grudge against me?”
Gu Changqing looked down and said, “I don’t understand what you’re saying, grandfather.”
The old marquis solemnly said, “You are my eldest grandson, I raised you with my own hands. How could I not understand what’s on your mind? Some things I thought I would take to the grave after I died… but recently, when I thought I was doomed, the one regret I had in my mind was that I never told you everything.”
Gu Changqing didn’t say a word.
He clearly didn’t care what his grandfather had kept from him.
The old marquis placed the teacup aside on a stool and said, “What I am about to tell you might be hard to accept.”
Gu Changqing scoffed with self-derision, implying something as he spoke, “What could I possibly not accept?”
“You have something,” the old marquis said, looking at him as his expression grew grave. “Do you think it was me who killed your mother?”
Gu Changqing clenched his fists.
The old marquis said, “Let me guess, did Aunt Ling tell you? I hadn’t expected she had seen what happened back then. Did she tell you that your mother’s condition was improving, but right after I visited her, her condition suddenly worsened, leading you to believe I was the murderer—and you believed it?”
“Did I believe wrong? Are you saying you didn’t order the bodyguard to kill my mother?” Gu Changqing wouldn’t have believed it so firmly if he hadn’t found evidence.
The old marquis wasn’t surprised that Gu Changqing could trace it back to the bodyguard; he knew his grandson’s abilities all too well.
The old marquis nodded, “That’s right, I did once think about killing her.”
Gu Changqing’s strong hand clenched into a fist as a hint of deeply suppressed pain showed on his brow, and he almost gnashed out his words, “Why! What did my mother do wrong that you had to kill her!”
“Your mother…” The old marquis closed his eyes briefly, his brow marked by complexity, “was a spy from the previous dynasty.”
