Chapter 109: 107 I have no relationship with him at all

"Come in."

Hua Mi was holding a disposable bowl and chopsticks, walking to the small desk where homework was being done. She served herself a bowl of rice and called out to Chi Chuan,

"Have you eaten?"

Chi Chuan’s mouth was almost drooling; he was embarrassed to ask while standing outside and was waiting for Hua Mi to invite him for the meal.

His eyes sparkled as he nodded and took the disposable bowl and chopsticks Hua Mi handed to him, saying,

"The road ahead is blocked; it might not be smooth sailing to retrieve supplies. B city can’t even muster a decent Clearing Team right now."

Hua Mi nodded, picking up a boneless fish slice with the public chopsticks from the small pot,

"If it were that smooth, B city’s supply depot would’ve been cleaned out long ago; we wouldn’t have to wait until now."

From Chi Chuan’s words, Hua Mi learned that Gong Yi had successfully located the Xiang City Garrison.

The situation with the Xiang City Garrison was truly dire. Right at the onset of the earthquake, the garrison commander of B city committed suicide by swallowing a gun, leaving the entire garrison team in a state of disorganization.

The various squad leaders were acting on their own since there were no superiors or management to issue commands. The garrison couldn’t enter the city, which led some to conduct rescue operations outside the city walls, while others sneaked into the city to help.

Some were managing order while also rescuing.

It was chaotic.

The result was like a group of headless flies with no organization, no plan, and no overall leader.

Even the supply of resources became a major problem.

As time dragged on, the entire B city garrison team’s fate became as grim as that of B city’s police force—diminishing numbers, a pile of dead and wounded.

Despite all this, the efforts were hardly effective. B city remained in disarray, with poor maintenance of order and few people saved. Whether it was the garrison, the police, or the survivors, everyone was on the brink of starvation.

"So how many people does the B city Garrison have now?"

Hua Mi had a bowl of rice but felt it wasn’t enough, so she had another. Her appetite could match Chi Chuan’s.

Chi Chuan was sitting in the seat by the door of the nanny van, separated from Hua Mi by a small corridor. He too had finished his bowl of rice.

But since he was mooching off Hua Mi’s meal, he felt embarrassed to ask for a second helping and could only bat his big, longing eyes as he continued,

"This is their garrison’s secret; I don’t know either, but I guess there aren’t many people left. We were called in by Commander Gong to haul supplies, and apparently, B city’s supply depot is huge."

It might even be bigger than that of Xiang City.

That meant they needed to find more people for the transport. Chi Chuan was just the right person, as he was helping Hua Mi sell supplies at the entrance of B city. His small trafficking group consisted of about a dozen people.

Commander Gong’s intention was to have Chi Chuan scout the area first, then each person would drive a supply truck back to Xiang City.

It just turned out that the problems were much more serious than expected.

B city’s supply depot was now buried under an entire mountain of mud.

They had to dig it out.

Chi Chuan also mentioned,

"This isn’t a small project. We’re setting up camp here today; Commander Gong has mobilized about a dozen trucks of supplies from inside Xiang City to cope for the time being, it seems like he’s preparing for a long-term battle."

Hua Mi threw the disposable bowl and chopsticks into the trash after finishing her meal, frowning,

"This doesn’t look like it’s going to be done any time soon."

They hadn’t even located the position of the supply depot yet; the road had been blocked, several mountains had collapsed, and just pinpointing the position of B city’s supply depot was a major task.

If there are enough supplies in the depot, then it would be worth it.

If Gong Yi’s costly and labor-intensive digging ends up yielding just a pittance, then there will be a big problem.

Inside the nanny vehicle, Hua Mi sank into contemplation. Then she saw Chi Chuan turn to look at her, his eyes full of teasing.

Hua Mi found it strange and raised her hand to touch her face,

"What’s with that look?"

"No, it’s just, Sister Hua, it seems like your boyfriend is in big trouble, and you don’t seem worried at all?"

Chi Chuan’s face was animated. He couldn’t quite understand his own feelings at the moment. Seeing someone as influential as Gong Yi stumped by the mud mountain ahead,

it made him wonder if there was anything in the world that could possibly stump Sister Hua while she still had the heart to sit here and cook fish on a rainy day.

"Don’t spout nonsense; I have nothing to do with him."

Hua Mi stood up and walked towards the door of the nanny vehicle, instructing the clearly unconvinced Chi Chuan,

"Let Eighth Uncle’s Clearing Team know to drop everything and head this way. I need to step out for a bit."

After speaking, Hua Mi hurried out of the camp.

The Garrison moved quickly, and in the camp they had set up overnight, a command center had already been designated.

Circumventing the command center, Hua Mi sent a message to Gong Yi,

[Hua Mi: I’m going to clear the road. Keep busy.]

She didn’t call because she was afraid it would annoy the big shot.

By the time she shouldered a shovel and left the command center, casually choosing a path obstructed by fallen rocks and debris, she started to shovel the rubble away.

With a single scoop, the dirt, stones, weeds, and trees that were as tall as a person all disappeared.

She hadn’t even applied much force; she had just poked at the obstacles with her shovel, and everything above it would be absorbed into her garbage station.

And then transformed into energy.

Gong Yi was in the command center, frowning at the sand table.

Around him stood ten team leaders brought over from B City, all dusty and grimy, their bodies smeared with dirt.

Some even had injuries.

These were team leaders from the B City Garrison called over by Gong Yi. It was fortunate they managed to survive a chaotic rescue operation—having ten still alive was a silver lining amidst the misfortune.

The tall and robust Gong Yi, with both hands braced on the makeshift sand table, listened to the casualty reports from the B City garrison team leaders.

"Reporting to Commander Gong, I am the team leader of the 3rd B City Garrison, currently, we have 78 survivors, 12 seriously injured, and 41 lightly injured."

"Reporting to Commander Gong, I am the team leader of the 6th B City Garrison, currently, we have 59 survivors, 23 seriously injured, and 25 lightly injured."

"Reporting to Commander Gong..."

Well, I’ll be damned. A city’s standard garrison force is 5000, a figure that is seldom actually reached—the real number of troops in each city’s Garrison is about three or four thousand.

B City’s garrison, including the injured, was nearly wiped out; half of them were dead.

Commander Gong’s expression was stern, and he cursed under his breath. He took out his phone to glance at the text from Hua Mi, then stuffed it back into his pocket,

"Transport all the injured to B City. Detach 100 people to set up a temporary medical center in B City. Arrange for supplies from the Xiang City Garrison."

One of the B City garrison team leaders hesitated,

"But Commander Gong, without orders from above, the Garrison can’t enter the city."

"I’m your direct superior right now. Either you follow my orders, or take off that Garrison uniform and go do whatever you want."

Before he had finished speaking, a shout came from outside the command tent,

"Reporting to the Commander, the road is clear."
