Chapter 870: After Modification -847 Still Can’t Rest
Bobby had already taken down more than ten enemies, more than he had in his twenty years as a gang member. The thrill of combat was gradually waning, and he began to feel physical fatigue, but Bobby believed he was far from reaching his limit.
A sudden scream behind him sent his heart plummeting into an ice pit—Undead creatures wouldn’t make such sounds when killed. Bobby turned around in panic and saw a fellow Crusader holding his abdomen and falling to the ground. What killed him was a special Skeleton Warrior—unlike the other poorly equipped undead around, this skeleton wore well-maintained plank armor and wielded a dual-bladed battle axe that gleamed coldly. Its eyeless sockets burned with purple flames, which now turned to stare at Bobby.
In that instant, Bobby felt as if his spirit had been hit by the battle axe. He felt an overwhelming fear that he couldn’t resist, rendering him immobile like he was under Paralysis Magic. He couldn’t even raise his arm, let alone turn and run.
It was clear that this enemy had some special ability. It lunged at Bobby with its battle axe raised high, ready to finish off its paralyzed opponent. But just as Bobby thought his life was about to end, a figure crashed into the Skeleton Warrior, deflecting its killing blow.
Bobby clearly saw that it was his old buddy, Terry, who had saved him. Terry’s body was covered in wounds of varying depths, and he looked quite battered, but he seemed unaffected by the fear effect. Roaring in anger, he swung his weapon at the Skeleton Warrior.
Unfortunately, this opponent was far stronger than Terry. The Skeleton Warrior parried all three of Terry’s consecutive sword strikes, and Terry’s fourth strike completely missed. The Skeleton Warrior just slightly dodged and simultaneously tripped Terry, causing him to fall to the ground.
The high-ranking undead let out a sharp, rat-like laugh and stepped on Terry’s back, ready to finish him off in the next second. This scene greatly stimulated Bobby. Without knowing when he regained control of his body, he dashed forward recklessly, raising his shield to protect the friend who had just saved his life.
The battle axe struck heavily against the shield, and Bobby heard a clear crack, followed by a wave of excruciating pain. He knew he had broken a bone, but his old buddy was safe—at least for now. With his left arm hanging uselessly at his side, Bobby ignored the pain and spun his body as fast as he could, swinging his nail-headed hammer at the closest part of the Skeleton Warrior.
The nail-headed hammer hit its target, and Bobby was pleased to see the warhammer shatter the Skeleton’s ankle. But in the next moment, he felt a terrible cold, and half of the battle axe blade appeared in his vision. He was still too slow, unable to completely thwart the enemy’s attack, and the battle axe finally cleaved into his neck.
To his surprise, it didn’t hurt.
But he soon realized he was looking at his body from a third-person perspective, as if in a dream. He was pleased to see Terry getting up, and the enemy, now missing a foot, lost its balance, exposing a big opening that Terry seized, slashing its wrist with his sword. Two more Crusaders joined the fight, and the already crippled enemy was soon reduced to pieces under the assault of swords, warhammers, and spears.
Terry came over and looked at the clearly lifeless corpse, a helpless expression in his eyes.
“I’ve avenged you, old buddy,” Terry said in a voice only he could hear, “Don’t worry, we’ll meet again soon…”
Bobby wanted to tell him he wasn’t in a hurry, but Terry had already turned and rushed towards the next enemy. At that moment, Bobby felt an irresistible force pulling him away from the chaotic battlefield. The world whizzed by him rapidly, and the Temple of the Lord of the Dead reappeared before him. This time, he encountered no resistance and entered the temple directly.
In the next moment, he found himself standing in a spacious stone chamber, with no wounds on his body. He felt exceptionally light and comfortable, as if he had returned to his childhood. There were others in the room, and a man wearing a silver-gray mask was looking at him. Bobby immediately knew who that figure was.
“My Lord!” Bobby exclaimed, about to kneel, but an invisible force stopped him.
“You don’t need to do that, my follower,” Cranvo said in a calm tone, “I have seen your whole life. You have done many wrong things, but none that are unforgivable. In the past few days, you have changed a lot because of your faith in me, especially the final sacrificial act for your friend that I admire greatly.”
“Thank you, Lord,” Bobby said, lowering his head in shame, “I didn’t think much at that time…”
“And that makes it even more precious,” Cranvo nodded, “As my follower and in your final state of life, you are fully qualified to enjoy eternal rest in my realm. But you must know, these are extraordinary times, and we must stop Lich Peyton Derrick and the mastermind behind him, Xirei. So, are you willing to return to the mortal world and fight for me once more?”
“Of course, my Lord,” Bobby raised his head sharply, “Your wish is my mission.”
“Good, thank you very much,” Cranvo nodded again, “Leave through the door behind you; someone is waiting for you.”
“Yes, my Lord…”
Bobby turned around and saw an exit with a white curtain hanging on the wall. He lifted the curtain and walked out. As he stepped through the door, a familiar feeling returned. His body felt heavy again, his vision seemed to dim, and it felt like his ears were stuffed with cotton, making it hard to hear the air flowing around him.
He knew what this meant.
At the door was a spacious hall resembling a church, with many people already seated on the benches. Cranvo’s emblem hung on the walls, and weapons and equipment were being distributed from a platform. A strong, powerful hand clapped on his shoulder, and its owner shouted his name at the same time.
Bobby quickly turned around, surprised to see a burly orc from his past standing before him.
“Olga Boss? What are you doing here?”
“I’d like to ask the same question. Cranvo said he was facing a great battle and asked if I would help… Ha ha ha, can you imagine, He asked an Orc if he wanted to join a battle!” Olga revealed a fierce grin, “By the way, I heard you’ve already been through one fight, right?”
