The Paladin in the Abyss -
Chapter 867 - 844 Crusader
Chapter 867 -844 Crusader
“Uh… just kidding, why are you suddenly so serious?”
“Because it could be a sign of something bad.” Kalalin replied very seriously, “After all, we’ve been in the Abyss for so long, we’re bound to be affected a bit, like… madness. Another possibility is that your Warhammer has been contaminated by too much Fiend filth, which carries strong Magic Power. So if it happens to awaken Spiritual Intelligence by chance, it’s probably not a good thing… In short, be careful, understand?”
“Got it, got it…” Bruto brought the hammerhead closer to his face, “Baby, I know you won’t fall, right?”
“Barring any surprises, the Lich’s army will arrive at the Gatutcik Mountains later.” Lancelot continued to answer the Dwarf’s earlier question, “Once the battle starts, the Lich and the Prince of Lies will have no other concerns, that will be the time to act. So for now, we just wait for Soveris’ message. According to yesterday’s plan, we first sneak in, then the followers of the Raven Queen will launch a feint attack on the outskirts to draw the guards’ attention… that side is already arranged, right, Tanya?”
“…Huh?” The Half-elf responded like a child called out by the teacher, “Sorry, I spaced out earlier… what did you ask me?”
“The feint attack, is it arranged?” Lancelot looked at the Half-elf with some concern, “Are you okay? You’ve been uneasy since this morning…”
“Don’t worry, it’s all arranged.” Tanya took a deep breath, “I’m just… a bit anxious, you know.”
“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.” Lancelot gently shook his head, “Once we’re inside, you’ll surely have an inspiration…”
“But what if I don’t?” the Half-elf replied tremblingly, “What if I can never understand the revelation from the mentor and can’t find a way to summon her, will we lose everything?”
“Don’t worry, that won’t happen.” Lancelot gave the Half-elf two heavy pats on the back, “But if you really can’t summon the woman behind you, then you’ll have to summon mine…”

Bobby clung tightly to the tree trunk, making sure he wouldn’t fall off, while his old buddy Terry mirrored him on the other side. Below them was the seemingly endless Undead army, their pale skulls resembling waves on a river, seemingly never-ending. Bobby felt like a cat trapped in a flood, a moment’s inattention could drown him.
Fortunately, the gray-white armor he wore seemed to hide the aura of the living, causing the flood below to ignore the beings above.
Bobby and Terry were both Crusaders who had responded to the call of the Lord of the Dead, Cranvo, to fight against the Evil God the Prince of Lies Xirei and his Lich puppet Peyton. Rather ironically, just a day ago, Bobby wasn’t a follower of Cranvo, he even participated in a conspiracy against the Grim Reaper’s daughter, whom he thought to be nothing but a foolish fraud at the time.
The conspiracy was easily thwarted. The Grim Reaper’s daughter’s guards had unimaginable strength. More importantly, the Grim Reaper’s daughter showed her mercy. Aside from the mastermind, she didn’t kill anyone else and spared his life.
When he returned to his filthy little hut and looked at his foul-smelling old mother, Bobby realized he had made a terrible mistake. Instinctively, he prayed devoutly to Cranvo, confessing his foolishness and regret, seeking the Grim Reaper’s forgiveness. To his surprise, a voice actually responded, telling him that ignorance was no crime, and he had already been forgiven by the God.
Before this, Bobby had never believed in any gods because he had never seen any evidence of their existence. But from that moment on, he became a devout believer, and Cranvo became his object of worship. It was a very special experience, like a huge void in his heart that he had never been aware of was now filled by his God. And through this filled void, he could clearly feel the presence of the God with him, and this made him feel very… happy.
So, upon receiving the divine decree, he set out immediately, and upon seeing his old buddy Terry among the companions, they exchanged a knowing smile, understanding that they had walked the same path of the heart.
Although they moved forward without stopping, someone had arrived at the Temple in the Gatutcik Mountains before them. Upon seeing those tall figures cloaked in robes, he knew they were Cranvo’s Envoys, representing the will of the Lord of the Dead.
The Envoys did not allow Bobby into the Temple, but instead gave him a badge, a suit of armor, a shield, a weapon of his choice, and a task. The former gang member had no complaints about this because he knew he was not yet worthy to meet the God, but he would soon earn that qualification.
The badge in his hand trembled slightly, signaling the start of the action. Bobby gently patted the tree trunk, immediately receiving a response. He then began counting down softly from three, and at the moment it ended, he and his old buddy leaped down from the tree. A special power surged from deep within him, but the already extremely excited Bobby didn’t realize it. The moment he landed, he shattered a skeleton, followed by smashing a second one with his Hardhead Hammer, and it was only then that the surrounding enemies responded.
Zombies and skeletons on both sides attacked him simultaneously. Bobby instinctively blocked with his shield against the zombies’ spears, exposing his back to the skeletons’ scimitars. The bone spearhead struck his shield with a crack, breaking, but before he could rejoice, a great force hit him from behind, making his whole body tingle and stumble.
Acting purely on instinct, the former gang member spun around, smashing the hammerhead into the skeleton’s fleshless face. The weapon granted by the Lord of the Dead seemed to have some restraining effect on Undead creatures, as the supposed iron-hard bones turned into rotted wood under his hammer, shattering the entire skull with one blow, leaving only a half skull cap hanging eerily on the spine.
It was only then that Bobby realized his armor had stood the test, for otherwise, he could not have delivered such a mighty blow. He felt a secret sense of relief, but this emotion lasted less than half a second before the metallic screeching behind his head reminded him that he was in the midst of a chaotic battlefield.
His body was again controlled by instinct, he rolled forward quickly, and upon rising, found that Terry was already grappling with a zombie, armed with a strange long rod… no, it was a spear, but its head had been broken on his shield, which was why he was still breathing.
Another zombie wielding a spear was thrusting at Toby’s back. Bobby knew what to do – cover his old buddy’s back. As for his own… amidst the endless Undead, he would make plenty of new friends.
