Chapter 129: 128: Facing Zhizhi, I can’t concentrate

On the street opposite the school, a black Maybach was parked. The front passenger window was partially open, letting occasional wisps of white smoke drift into the air, carried away by the breeze.
The man squinted slightly, holding a cigarette between his lips. After undoing two buttons at his collar, his distinctively jointed hand moved toward his cuff.
He rolled up both sleeves casually, leaned back against the seat with ease, and held the cigarette between two fingers, taking a deep drag.
Shi Wei waited for a while but couldn’t resist dialing the little girl’s number. Yet after only two rings, the call was cut off by the other party.
He raised an eyebrow and glanced out the window. The moment he spotted a captivating figure, his faintly rosy lips curved slightly.
Yu Zhi jogged across the street, opened the car door, and slid into the passenger seat. When the man extended his arms toward her, she froze for a split second before eagerly throwing herself into his embrace.
"The results for the monthly exams are out today." The girl murmured softly as she leaned on his shoulder, her tone laced with a hint of gloom.
Shi Wei scooped the girl up by her waist and shifted her onto his lap.
He playfully tapped the tip of her delicate nose and asked gently, "Didn’t do well, huh?"
Yu Zhi hummed in response, then shoved the wrinkled test papers into his hands all at once, as if unwilling to touch them again.
Shi Wei pulled her closer into his arms before leisurely unfolding the sheets.
The first thing to catch his eye was the 58-point score on the Chinese paper. His hand holding the sheet paused slightly, but his expression remained unchanged as he set it aside.
He thought to himself that perhaps the little girl was simply not good at humanities. But as he flipped through the second and third papers and failed to find even a single passing grade, his elegant brows lifted involuntarily.
"Zhizhi, how exactly did you manage scores like these?" The man pointed at the glaringly red 20 on the math test.
"I just did..." Yu Zhi pursed her lips and lowered her head, somewhat guiltily.
Despite the man tutoring her often and covering much of the material that appeared on the tests, she still couldn’t seem to remember it.
Shi Wei couldn’t bear to see the girl looking so downcast and upset. After a moment’s contemplation, he folded all the test papers and placed them on the back seat.
"Zhizhi, you’re really not cut out for studying." He chuckled lightly, cupped her cheeks, gave them a little squeeze, and kissed her lightly pouted lips caused by his teasing.
Yu Zhi blinked, her moist eyes reflecting confusion. "You’re not angry?"
"Why would I be angry?"
"You teach me every day, but I still can’t pass."
"Teaching you is my responsibility as your boyfriend. If you didn’t learn well, that’s partly on me too." To ease her mental burden, the man took all the blame upon himself.
He leaned his forehead against hers, gently nuzzling her with his nose. His deep voice was filled with infinite indulgence: "Faced with Zhizhi, I just can’t concentrate."
That fervent gaze caused the girl’s cheeks to flush. She tugged on the man’s sleeve, lowering her eyes to focus only on the tip of his nose.
"It’s not your fault." Her shy demeanor was irresistibly adorable. Her blushing cheeks resembled the blooms of cherry blossoms in spring, so mesmerizingly beautiful that one couldn’t look away.
Shi Wei moistened his dry lips, closed his eyes, and tilted his head, savoring her sweetness—the very thing he needed most at that moment.
As their breaths intertwined, the man’s large hand resting on her slim waist ventured forward to press the car window switch.
After the kiss, the girl buried her face into his chest, panting heavily to steady her uneven breathing and racing heartbeat.
The man lowered his gaze to look her over, ran his fingers through her silky black hair, and said hoarsely, "Old Sir Xu wants us to come for dinner tonight."
The girl nodded her petite head repeatedly while remaining shyly nestled against him, unwilling to lift her face.
It wasn’t until the sun dipped below the horizon that they finally separated, started the car, and disappeared down the street.
At the Xu Family estate.
In the grand living room, Xu Zhen sat in the center on a pearwood chair, holding a lidded tea cup.
He blew on the tea leaves floating along the rim, took a small sip, and then set the cup down on the nearby table.
"Ask that girl where she is now." Xu Zhen folded his hands over the dragon-headed cane, tapping it lightly on the floor twice.
Sitting to his left, Xu Fan promptly pulled his phone out of his pocket, opened his contact list, and dialed Shi Wei’s number.
After exchanging a few words with the other party, he looked up at the old man in the main seat. "They said five minutes."
Xu Zhen acknowledged with an "Hmm," then shot a disapproving look at Xu Linchuan, who was hovering by the kitchen door ready to sneak a bite. "What a disgrace! Do you know how you look?"
"Old Sir, I’m starving!" Xu Linchuan lamented, clutching his stomach. Under the chandelier’s glow, his rugged features appeared surprisingly gentle.
"Even if you’re hungry, it’s no excuse. Get over here!"
"Alright..."
Xu Linchuan dragged his feet toward the sofa, gulping down a big glass of water to fend off his hunger.
From sunrise to sunset, he’d been busy at the police station all day with only one meal to sustain him. He had been hoping to come home to a feast waiting for him.
While the feast was indeed there, it was clearly meant for someone else instead.
Silently, he grumbled in his heart, utterly despondent as he clutched a throw pillow: "Sigh, they’re probably off being lovey-dovey again."
Just as his words trailed off, a familiar cane mercilessly landed on his backside.
"Old Sir! Why are you hitting me?!" Xu Linchuan jumped up, clutching his bottom, and cast a resentful glance at the elder.
Xu Zhen prodded his heel with the cane and gave him a sharp glare. "Fix your posture! Who taught you to sit like that?"
Xu Linchuan: "..."
He was sure he wasn’t actually part of the Xu Family.
Just as he was about to argue back, the sound of approaching footsteps interrupted him.
Xu Linchuan felt the old man’s demeanor soften significantly—his expression even carried a kindly smile.
"Girl, come here." Xu Zhen waved at the girl. When she stepped closer, he propped himself up with the cane and scanned her from head to toe.
"Grandpa Xu." Yu Zhi beamed at him and handed over the item she carried in her hand. "I got these tea leaves for you."
Since it was her first time visiting the Xu Family, she felt too embarrassed to arrive empty-handed, so she had Shi Wei take her to buy a gift on the way.
Xu Zhen’s grin stretched so wide it nearly touched his ears. "You didn’t need to bring anything! It’s a waste of money for an old man like me."
Despite his words, his careful and deliberate handling of the gift box made it evident he was determined to protect it from even the slightest bump or scratch.
