Chapter 111: Sticky: What do you consider sticky?

The breeze, on the cusp of winter, was far less gentle than usual. Even under the bright sunshine, it carried a chill.

Yu Zhi tightened her coat around herself, took a purple candy from her pocket, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth.

Squinting slightly, she savored the sweet, subtle flavor while waiting for Ruan Yuan to come down and meet her.

"Little Zhi, over here."

Within five minutes, a woman dressed in pajamas came jogging out of the building entrance in a hurry.

Ruan Yuan linked her arm with Yu Zhi’s and yawned. "I should’ve just given you a keycard earlier."

Her eyes carried a hint of fatigue, as if she hadn’t fully woken up.

"Why didn’t you just toss it down?" Yu Zhi raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a faint smile.

Ruan Yuan: "..."

Good point—she’d been dumb.

"Let’s go, let’s go, it’s freezing out here." Ruan Yuan gave a shiver, pressed herself close to Yu Zhi, and quickened her pace considerably.

Ruan Yuan’s apartment was the room on the right side of the third floor. The interior was simple; though not overly decorated, it emanated a cozy warmth.

"Why are you here so early?" Ruan Yuan handed her a glass of warm water and opened a can of iced coffee for herself, hoping to perk up.

Yu Zhi glanced at the pink sofa under her and replied casually, "I need to go home tonight."

The non-working Saturday meant that if she left home late, she’d surely return late as well.

She didn’t want to keep him waiting too long.

"Still, no need to come this early, right?" Ruan Yuan sighed in mild exasperation, swiping her phone screen and holding it up to her. "It’s only 7:30 in the morning."

Who even goes out to hang out this early?

Yu Zhi took a small sip of water and shifted her gaze to Ruan Yuan’s face, her tone serious: "It’s not early; you’re just used to waking up late."

Ruan Yuan had no comeback for that.

She slumped onto the sofa, clutching a pillow tightly. If no one were sitting beside her, she might have fallen asleep instantly.

Yu Zhi turned her head to glance at her, her tone slightly uncertain. "Want to sleep first?"

"Really?"

Ruan Yuan was practically moved to tears. She thought jet lag was hard enough, but it turned out this friend was the real obstacle between her and her soft, cozy bed.

"Mm." Yu Zhi replied briefly, placing the glass back onto the table, crossing her legs in laid-back ease. "I’ll wake you up later."

Ruan Yuan clapped her hands together in gratitude. "Thank you! I’m heading in."

Watching Ruan Yuan dart into her bedroom like a whirlwind, a flicker of surprise surfaced in Yu Zhi’s eyes.

She wandered around the living room briefly, but finding it boring, she pulled out her laptop from her bag and began watching the Korean drama that she hadn’t finished yet.

Not long after, her phone placed beside her began buzzing repeatedly. Yu Zhi quickly hit the pause button without thinking and tapped to answer the video call.

"Zhizhi." The man’s morning voice carried a raspy edge, mingled with a deep tone that left her ears tingling.

Shi Wei leaned against the pillow she’d been using, his long lashes fluttering subtly at the corners of his eyes, as if carrying a touch of grievance. "Why didn’t you wake me up?"

Yu Zhi calmly glanced towards the bedroom, her voice softening slightly. "I didn’t want to disturb you."

She adjusted the phone forward a bit, allowing him to see her more clearly.

A hint of amusement flashed in Shi Wei’s eyes. He ruffled his already tousled hair, his thin lips pressing into a straight line. "Zhizhi, when are you coming back?"

"Possibly in the afternoon."

"Can’t have lunch together?"

Looking at the man’s pitiful expression on the screen, Yu Zhi’s heart melted into a puddle.

She paused for two seconds before offering, "How about you come over and join us for lunch?"

Upon hearing this, Shi Wei sighed lightly, managing a reluctant smile. "Never mind, I’ll wait for you at home."

Though he hated the idea of her being out of his sight, he didn’t dare act too possessive, fearing it might backfire.

"Alright, I’ll come back earlier." Yu Zhi smiled warmly into the camera, her almond-shaped eyes rippling like waves.

Seeing her smile, Shi Wei’s negative feelings seemed to dissipate significantly.

He relished the lingering scent on the bedding—a trace of his little girl that made it feel as though she were still there.

The two chatted for quite a while until Ruan Yuan had caught up on her sleep and emerged from the bedroom, prompting Yu Zhi to end the video call.

"Little Zhi, you two are way too clingy, aren’t you?" Ruan Yuan remarked casually, carrying a makeup bag and sitting down on the sofa.

She had changed into a light green dress, her hair neatly tied at the back, looking much more refreshed than earlier.

Yu Zhi replied seriously, "Not clingy."

If they were clingy, she wouldn’t have come here today.

"Then what do you define as clingy?" Ruan Yuan paused mid-stroke with her cushion applicator and turned to her, curious to hear her take on ’clinginess.’

"Always together, never apart."

"But isn’t that how you are with him?"

Yu Zhi shook her head. "No, during the day I have to attend school."

"I see..." Ruan Yuan was momentarily at a loss for words, concluding that Little Zhi’s thought process was definitely different from hers.

"Mm." Yu Zhi pressed play on the Korean drama again, continuing where she had left off.

The sound of a conversation between a man and a woman in Korean gradually filled the room as Ruan Yuan finished her makeup. Noticing that Yu Zhi was still deeply immersed in the drama, Ruan Yuan leaned over to peek at the screen.

"Little Zhi, let’s watch something else instead?" Ruan Yuan slung an arm around her shoulder, raising an eyebrow at her.

Her gaze carried an indefinable mischief, making Yu Zhi feel a foreboding sense of unease. "What would we change to?"

Ten minutes later, Yu Zhi sat with a face flushed deep red, her eyes darting away from the screen playing the video in front of her.

Hesitantly curling her fingers, her voice came out as soft as a whispering mosquito: "I don’t want to watch this..."

"No need to be shy. We’re all adults here." Ruan Yuan teased with wicked amusement, pinching her crimson cheeks before moving the laptop further to the left, ensuring she couldn’t avoid looking.

Yu Zhi pursed her lips, her eyes shimmering with misty haze. "I’ve already seen it once before."

Once was more than enough for her. If not for the novelty, she probably wouldn’t have watched it at all.

"Learn more; there’s no limit to knowledge, you know?"

Yu Zhi: "..."

That proverb didn’t seem apt for this scenario.

Yu Zhi reached out and touched the power button. "Ruan Yuan, let’s not watch, okay?"

Strangely, this time while watching, her mind kept drifting to thoughts of her and Shi Wei...

She was mortified.

"No way." Ruan Yuan swiftly grabbed the laptop, her tone suddenly solemn as she pointed at the scene on the screen. "If you don’t study properly, what if your man starts finding fault with you later?"
