Chapter 103: 102: Who is the real killer?
But in reality, everything she had to face after returning home and the consequences she had to bear were known only to herself.
Yu Xinman held her hand in return, tears welling up as she bit her lower lip: "Lu Lu... thank you."
At this moment, she was genuinely grateful that Zhou Lu could help her shoulder everything.
It was as if she had been walking alone in a night full of phantoms and monsters, only to suddenly meet someone who could light a lamp and guide her toward the light.
"No need to be so polite with me; after all, we’re the best of sisters," Zhou Lu curved her lips into a smile, one that was impossibly sincere.
"Hmm, you’re right." Yu Xinman lowered her gaze slightly, her thick dark lashes brushing against her lower eyelids, hiding the unease in her eyes.
Zhou Lu chatted with her while peeling an apple. Though the atmosphere was pleasant, Yu Xinman still seemed absent-minded.
"Xinman, what’s on your mind?" Zhou Lu handed her a small piece of apple and thoughtfully placed a tissue by the edge of the bed.
"It’s nothing."
"If there’s something bothering you, just tell me. Doesn’t it feel terrible to keep it all bottled up?"
Yu Xinman hesitated for a moment before taking a deep breath: "It does feel terrible, but I have no other choice."
Initially, she hadn’t planned on telling Zhou Lu about Yu Zhi smashing her legs with a computer.
But on second thought, she realized she couldn’t go to school now, and without seeing Yu Zhi, there was no way she could explain things to Brother Hu.
"What?!" Zhou Lu shot up from her seat, pointing at her knees: "This was Yu Zhi? Is she insane?!"
Yu Xinman was startled by her sudden movement and quickly grabbed her hand, trying to calm her down: "Lu Lu, don’t get so worked up."
"How can I not be? Yu Zhi hit you so viciously—she’s trying to ruin you, isn’t she?"
"I really can’t believe it. How could she be so cruel!" Zhou Lu crossed her arms over her chest, her small face turning alternately pale and flushed with anger.
She firmly believed that Yu Zhi’s actions stemmed from jealousy, in an attempt to drag Xinman off that dazzling stage.
"Actually, I’m partly to blame," Yu Xinman straightened her posture, a hint of guilt flickering in her eyes.
"Alright, alright, stop blaming everything on yourself." Zhou Lu felt a mix of anger and helplessness; she hated to see Xinman being too forgiving but couldn’t bring herself to be harsh with her either.
"What did Uncle Yu say?"
"Dad... he..."
Yu Xinman trailed off, then let out a bitter laugh and shook her head: "Forget it, it’s not entirely my sister’s fault."
Her hesitation led Zhou Lu’s imagination to conjure up a whole melodrama: a father who showed unrelenting favoritism toward an illegitimate child while neglecting the legitimate children of his lawful wife.
Zhou Lu pursed her lips, furrowing her brows as she looked at her with deep sympathy: "Xinman, you still have me."
Yu Xinman murmured in agreement, linking her arm through Zhou Lu’s and leaning against her. Her voice softened slightly, making it hard to discern her emotions: "Lu Lu, can you do me a favor?"
"What is it?"

That night, Xu Linchuan rushed to the Shi Family with a file in hand, looking ruffled from travel.
He settled comfortably on the sofa, holding a cup of hot tea. As he stared at the steam curling upward from the cup, it seemed all his exhaustion was swept away.
"Just got out of the police station?" Shi Wei lit the cigarette between his fingers, sizing up the man in front of him.
He had been planning to cuddle with his little girl and enjoy a good night’s sleep, only for this guy’s sudden arrival to ruin the mood.
If it weren’t for his disheveled clothes and dark circles under his eyes, Shi Wei wouldn’t even have opened the door to let him in.
"Yeah, I’ve been interrogating Yang Bin these past two days." Xu Linchuan let out a long sigh and handed the file by his side to Shi Wei: "Wanna take a look?"
Shi Wei opened the file and skimmed through Yang Bin’s testimony and the DNA comparison charts extracted from the crime scene.
"Where’s this DNA from?" Shi Wei raised an eyebrow, exhaled a puff of smoke, and flipped to the next page.
If he remembered correctly, they hadn’t uncovered anything before, not even a strand of hair.
"It was extracted from a clothing store owned by one of the victims," Xu Linchuan said with a faint smirk as he sipped his tea. "That bastard missed one small detail, and we nabbed him because of it."
"Not Yang Bin?" Shi Wei closed the file and tossed it onto the edge of the table, bracing one hand against the back of the sofa.
Just as Xu Linchuan was about to speak, a clear and melodious voice came from behind: "Then who is it?"
Yu Zhi walked down the stairs at an unhurried pace. She was wearing a white shirt, buttoned neatly from top to bottom, leaving only her slender and straight legs exposed.
"Zhizhi, come here." Shi Wei’s gaze lingered on her fair, porcelain-like legs for a moment. He stubbed out his cigarette and opened his arms toward her.
As she approached, he scooped her into his arms, draping a small blanket over her legs to cover them.
"Did I wake you?" Shi Wei gently stroked her soft, jet-black hair, his tone tender and doting.
"No, I wasn’t sleeping yet. I got bored waiting for you, so I came down," she replied.
Yu Zhi instinctively leaned her head on his shoulder, her unblinking eyes fixed on Xu Linchuan: "Who’s the murderer?"
Their intimate interaction was enough to make Xu Linchuan’s teeth ache. He clicked his tongue and then adopted a mysterious expression: "Why don’t you take a guess?"
Yu Zhi pondered for a moment: "Yang Bin’s friend?"
She had noticed something off about Yang Bin’s state when she was in the basement.
Not only was his work sloppy and full of loopholes, but he had also shown extreme emotional turmoil when she mentioned the serial killer, resembling a mentally unstable individual.
"Wrong," Xu Linchuan said, crossing his legs and gesturing for her to keep guessing.
"His father?"
"Wrong again."
"If you’re not going to say it, get out." Shi Wei shot him a frosty glare, his piercing gaze carrying a glacial chill.
The little girl had class tomorrow—who had time for his games?
"Master Shi, come on, can’t you be a little patient?" Xu Linchuan waved off the remark, clearly deflated, and decided to stop teasing. "It’s Yang Bin’s younger brother, Yang Feng."
"Have you caught him?" Shi Wei was far more concerned with results than discussions about the culprit’s identity.
"Not yet."
"Did he target Zhizhi because of his brother?"
"No," Xu Linchuan’s brows furrowed, his expression tinged with complexity. "Yang Bin has psychological problems."
Because of two identical boxes containing dead chickens, Yang Bin mistakenly believed that the upstairs tenant was also killed by his brother.
After discovering the truth, he blamed Yu Zhi, thinking it was her fault that he was caught by the police. Thus, he wanted to emulate his brother and "dispose" of her.
"But why did the upstairs tenant also have a box?" Yu Zhi’s eyes glinted with confusion.
