Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Showing the Difference Between a Knight and a Beast
The knight’s smile froze. "What’s wrong? Why do you look nervous?" he asked with a nervous tone in his words; he could feel that something was seriously wrong by the recruits’ reactions.
The atmosphere grew dense, as if the air had thickened. With each passing second of their delay in responding, Argus grew more impatient, making the atmosphere colder with every moment.
William stepped forward and took Dixon by the shoulder, placing him behind himself. His gaze locked fearlessly with the knight’s eyes.
"I assume you’re Argus Rednaviz, correct?" he said calmly. "Your brother spoke a lot about you; he always said he had a brother who would save him from any trouble."
Argus raised an eyebrow, curious yet tense.
"Yes... We were quite close." His expression changed, his voice dropping a tone. "I suppose you know where he is. Right?"
His aura exploded like an invisible pressure wave, engulfing the entire hall with the presence of a true Level 3 Knight.
"Angel, tell me how strong he is," William thought quickly.
The statistics appeared before him, showing a slight injury to his hip, which explained the large difference in his stats.
Strength: 63
Agility: 52
Vitality: 70
He wasn’t weak. But he wasn’t invincible either. The ship’s sailors were much more impressive, and William always trained with them, so he was accustomed to their speed and strength. Although he felt nervous, he knew he had a good chance in a battle if he exploited his strengths.
William didn’t respond immediately. His silence was interpreted as mockery.
Argus took another step forward, closing the distance until his forehead touched William’s.
"You should speak when I ask politely..."
William didn’t move an inch.
"Or what?"
Argus’s jaw tightened. He placed his hand on the hilt of his sword.
"I won’t repeat myself. Where is my brother?"
There was no longer any trace of courtesy. His voice was icy, filled only with anger.
William lowered his chin slightly.
"I blew the idiot’s head off in the selection battle."
The words hit Argus harder than any punch; what he had feared most had truly happened. Guilt filled his heart as he remembered how his brother always talked about following him and how he tried to persuade his brother not to apply to the academy and instead inherit his father’s throne. Only one guardian was needed for the Empire; there was no need for both of them to be in danger. But his brother idolized him too much, Argus knew it, and there was no way he wouldn’t apply for the selection unless death forced him. For a few seconds, there was only silence, a solitary tear fell to the ground with a small "plop," as if that sound released it. The sword was drawn with such fury that no one could react to stop him.
The cut was direct to the neck, swift and precise; a beautiful arc was drawn, leaving a light blue trail. The blow passed straight through, surprising Argus, who felt no impact.
He lifted his gaze, searching for his target, but William was no longer there.
He slid to the side with a dry movement, his foot scraping the ground. The blade sliced through the air and missed by centimeters. William had not yet drawn his sword. With unsettling calm, he tilted his head to the side to dodge the next diagonal slash.
Argus gave him no room to breathe; each movement was more violent than the last, but despite how terrifying Argus seemed, he had lost all rationality, making his blows predictable.
William spun backward, avoiding a thrust to the heart, and finally, his hand closed on the hilt of his sword. In a sudden flash of steel, William’s blade emerged only to meet Argus’s and split it in two.
The broken metal clattered to the ground with a hollow sound.
"You’re strong, but not the one."
William lunged forward, taking advantage of Argus’s moment of hesitation, slamming his fist into his abdomen with such force that the knight doubled over, spitting a mouthful of blood. The blow momentarily brought Argus back to his senses, but William had no intention of allowing such a powerful opponent to recover, so without hesitation, William conjured a sphere of fire.
At such close range, it was impossible to dodge.
BOOM!
The explosion threw Argus through the air like a rag doll. His body bounced against the hall wall before collapsing with a smoking torso and burned armor; his face was completely melted, making him look like a zombie.
William walked towards him, his sword emitting a red glow that looked utterly bloodthirsty, ready to finish what he had started. But before he could reach him, a hand intervened.
"Enough."
The voice was deep, dry as fractured stone.
The other knight, who had been silent until that moment, looked at him coldly. William narrowed his eyes.
In his mind, Angel’s voice shrieked in a tone she had never used before:
"EXTREME DANGER!"
Great Knight Detected – Level 2
Strength: 400
Dexterity: 490
Vitality: 499
"William, run now. He’s not on your level. He’ll kill you effortlessly."
William swallowed hard.
For the first time in a long time, he felt his life was truly at stake.
The knight slowly lowered his hand.
"Despite being in the right, you nearly killed one of your comrades; you must be severely punished."
William did not reply. He simply sheathed his sword.
And stepped back.
The difference between a knight and a beast wasn’t power... it was control, and the man in front of him was a beast in knight’s clothing. But Angel had also detected a magical vibration being generated at that moment, a few meters from his position.
As the second knight decided what to do with William, a mage appeared in front of him, saying, "The discipline of my apprentices is not for you to decide."
The Mage suddenly appeared, standing in front of the knight with a confident smile showing the clear contempt he felt for knights.
