The Nightmare Wizard -
Chapter 109: Nightmare City
Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Nightmare City
The blow directly impacted the bear’s neck, severing it almost completely. The bear whimpered, staggering back while trying to hold its head with its paws, but an ice spear pierced it, finally separating its head from its body. The bear fell with a heavy impact to the ground and began to turn into gray smoke.
Upon landing, William approached the corpse and began to absorb it again with his ring. The gray energy flooded into his body. After a moment, his entire body burned with power. Despite that, he fell back onto the ground as he recovered. His whole body screamed in pain. The last time he had used that ability, all his muscles had broken, and now, with this combination ability, he expected to suffer a much more violent reaction. But to his surprise, his body was still intact; he only felt some pain, nothing serious.
"We did excellent, Angel. We got lucky, but we did it."
"It was risky, but there was no other option. Fortunately, it was a slow beast, otherwise, it would have killed us. Compared to the other two, this is the strongest beast we’ve faced, too bad even its skin disappeared or else we could have made armor."
"It’s true, but I feel my body becoming more and more powerful. At this rate, things will change soon, and I’ll be able to finish off anyone."
"The bear increased your stats by 0.05. At this rate, it won’t be long until you reach the next level."
Hours later, the forest began to thin, and the blood-red sky of the Nightmare Realm appeared again.
Before them, at the foot of a gray mountain, a strange city loomed. But it wasn’t a city like those in the real world. It looked like an abandoned mine growing towards the sky with precarious structures made of black rock, twisted metal, and bones. From a distance, William and Angel could see dozens of creatures working.
There were minotaurs with their large muscles dragging giant rocks, stone golems, large armies of skeletons, four-legged creatures with human faces screaming incessantly. All of them were lifting materials towards a central tower that seemed made of all the world’s trash.
"What the hell is this...?" William whispered.
Before he could analyze further, the crunch of desperate footsteps distracted him. From the city, three human figures ran towards the forest.
Two men and a woman, while behind them, about to catch up, was a pack of ferocious hellhounds. The dogs seemed to be made of lava, their entire bodies glowing red, and flames escaped their mouths every time they panted.
William didn’t think twice. He needed information, so he drew his sword and moved. A silver line sliced through the air. The surprised dogs tried to breathe fire at William, allowing him to activate his sword’s ability. All their spells were cut in half without being able to cause him any harm. Without mercy, he continued his assault, and in a matter of seconds, three decapitated bodies fell, still emitting a smoke that stank of sulfur.
The three humans fell to their knees. "Thank you, thank you, please... thank you!" one said.
The woman had white hair and light blue eyes. She resembled Little Star... but she was more emaciated, as if she had experienced many storms. William stepped forward, trying to examine the girl more closely, but before he could touch her cheek, a roar shook the heavens.
GROOOAAARRRRR
Angel screamed in his mind with a desperate voice: "Level 2 Mage heading towards us at full speed! Retreat recommended... Negative! He’s already here."
The air exploded in front of them. Unlike the elegance with which his professor appeared and disappeared, this monster resembling a lizard-man crashed down from the sky, raising a large amount of dust. Its body was covered in dark scales, with glowing tattoos on its chest. On its back, a spear as tall as itself.
The pressure it emitted was brutal. William felt his legs tremble. The lizard roared again towards the sky as it unsheathed its spear, never taking its eyes off William. "Who dares to kill my pets?!" The beast’s voice echoed throughout the place. The three fleeing humans had fainted from the pressure, while William tried to appear unaffected, pretending to be fine.
After roaring, the lizard suddenly stopped. Something in the atmosphere changed. It approached, sniffing like a beast, until its snout reached William’s hand.
Its gaze fell on the ring, and then... its face changed. There was no longer the expression of fury and hatred with which it had arrived, but now an expression of absolute terror.
The lizard fell to its knees, pressing its head to the ground while begging for mercy. William seemed satisfied; that was why he had remained standing firm, pretending to be fine, betting that if the beetle beast had decided to flee as soon as it sensed something within him, this little lizard should wet its pants as soon as it became aware of his presence.
"Who is the ruler of this place?" William pronounced those words slowly, emphasizing each one as if he were a ruler questioning one of his subjects.
"Answering my lord, Rak’sa Mahlim, the Duke, governs this area. I have already summoned him; he will come immediately, exalted. Please have mercy on these poor and unworthy servants for not recognizing your excellence."
The powerful Lizard kept its face against the ground without the slightest intention of moving. It looked like a curled-up shrimp or an ostrich. Its reaction didn’t seem false or exaggerated; although it was part of William’s plan for this to happen, it was really going too well.
"William, I’ve already seen the mask you keep mentioning. You’re wearing it right now, and it exudes a gigantic pressure. I can’t measure it or even feel it; it’s as if it doesn’t exist. Look."
Angel showed William his face; the mask was screwed onto his face, though it was different from how he remembered it. Now a small piece was missing from the bottom, and even the cracks on the mask’s surface had become much more pronounced, making it seem even more fragile than before.
