The Nightmare Wizard
Chapter 104: Conviction

Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Conviction

The teacher, clearly annoyed, ended the class to avoid further humiliation. William, without waiting, left the room and headed for the infirmary. He wanted to see how Lía was doing after the attack.

The infirmary was as empty as before, and the medical staff were chatting among themselves. A faint light came from small crystals, making the room feel calm. William quietly walked through the door into the room where he had left Lía.

Inside, he saw Lía sleeping on one of the beds. Her face was still swollen and pale, and her breathing was uneven. He approached slowly and sat beside her. His hand trembled for a moment before he placed his fingers over hers.

"I’m here..." he whispered as he sat down. Despite Lía’s awful appearance, William didn’t look away. Instead, he made sure to remember how she looked to ensure everyone involved would pay for what they did.

Less than thirty minutes had passed since he punched that bastard’s face. He didn’t regret it for a second. He knew the school wouldn’t punish those brats, so he would. And he had. According to the rules, accidents aren’t punished, as all apprentices in the academy are prone to them.

The door burst open, and three figures quickly entered. The first was Professor Silga. Behind her, stumbling and leaning on each other, were Mors Tharn and Mikkon Velth. The student he had thrown the sap at had his right hand wrapped in black bandages that slowly dripped a black liquid, giving off a strong, rotten smell. The other had a sunken face, looking quite funny, like a pig’s head.

William didn’t move or say anything; he just glanced at them for a second.

The nurses rushed to help the newcomers. A couple of them came over with special ointments and a glowing emerald magical crystal syringe.

Silga watched him silently. She didn’t say a word as she slowly walked through the infirmary, her hands clasped behind her back, stopping at the foot of Lía’s bed.

With a serious look, she gazed at Lía in her sad state, as if checking the damage with a clinical eye. Her brow furrowed for a second before her face became completely serious again, showing no emotion.

While Professor Silga assessed Lía, William stood up, his breathing quickening. His hand unconsciously brushed the hilt hidden under his robe. If she decided to punish him right then, if she decided to kill him... no one would defend him. Defending himself against a teacher was suicide, but if he had to die, he would do so with gritted teeth and ready fists. He wasn’t sure if his sword could cut through a mage’s spells, but if the teacher decided to attack, she should be ready to die.

Silga didn’t turn to him. She just spoke, her voice cold and flat.

"An unusual reaction for a first-year student... though..." Her gaze briefly fell on the two students’ bloody bandages. "I suppose that’s why you’re a genius. Don’t be so tense; if I did anything to you, your master Aurus would probably come to kill me."

William didn’t lower his guard; he just looked at her with a hint of confusion. He hadn’t expected to hear his master mentioned. He had thought that after their farewell, Aurus wouldn’t look out for him during his time at the academy, but it seemed he was still watching.

"It wasn’t an accident," William said, his voice cold and full of contained fury.

"And who are you to judge?" Silga asked, raising an eyebrow.

William took a step forward, leaving Lía’s bed behind him. His eyes were like two burning coals.

"I don’t need to judge, but I can give the sentence."

Silga remained silent for a few seconds. Then she looked at the nurses, who were still working on the injured students.

"The pain you caused will last for several days. The shadow sap extract you used was badly diluted. It could have torn off their skin if it landed on another area..." She turned, now facing him directly. "You knew what you were doing."

"Just like they knew what they were doing when they threw it at Lía."

"Do you have proof?"

William smiled. A dark, bitter smirk.

"No, and even if I did, I know you wouldn’t accept it."

A long silence fell. Only the sound of bandages being tightened and the faint groans of the two apprentices being healed broke the tension.

Finally, Silga nodded slowly.

"Then consider this a tie. Your punishment... was your response. But a warning, Mr. William: the next time you attack without permission in a class, I won’t be the one to come for you. It will be the Disciplinary Committee, and a message from them: don’t think that just because you got away with it, this academy is yours. You may be a Level 2 genius, but you’re nothing but trash compared to true geniuses."

William didn’t respond. He just sat back down next to Lía as Silga turned on her heel and walked out the door. The two injured students were taken to different beds and moved to other rooms for continued monitoring.

Silence filled the room again. William took Lía’s hand once more. He squeezed it hard. This time, William wasn’t trembling; he just had an icy stare.

"They’re not going to touch you again. Not while I’m alive."

The fact that she was hurt just inches from him was something he couldn’t stop regretting. If he had activated his mana shield or pulled her away, he could have prevented this. Lía had paid the price for underestimating those damn nobles.

William had always thought that being a Level 2 Apprentice, as long as no one reached his level, would be enough to ensure both their safety within the school. But he was very wrong; this level of power wasn’t even enough for him to be taken seriously.

Leaving Lía’s room, he headed back to his own room before beginning to recite the spell that sent him to that strange world.
