Chapter 1020: Chapter 813, How Much Longer Must You Hide Chapter 1020: Chapter 813, How Much Longer Must You Hide “Your Highness, there is no need to panic,” another person spoke. “Their goal is to force us to make a mistake in our haste.”
The Second Prince fixed his gaze on the speaker and asked in a stern voice, “Always telling me not to worry, but how much longer must I hide here? Like a rat.”
The people below remained calm in the face of the Second Prince's anger.
They didn't even seem as tense as when the official had disappeared.
The elder who had spoken first once again said calmly, “This is just a temporary endurance. Once the City Lord of Lundham City is dead and we have taken over there, we can snatch back everything we've lost and restore you to the throne.”
The others joined in one after another, echoing similar sentiments.
The Second Prince took a deep breath, his gaze sweeping across their faces. “I understand this, and I won't ruin the original plan, but what now? Shall we just let them keep killing the city's officials?”
A tall, lean man stood up and said, “Your Highness, I believe we can set a trap to draw them out.”
The Second Prince looked at him, “What's your idea?”
“The thieves ultimately want you, Your Highness. Why don't we let out a body double and expose them? Once the murderer shows up, we'll kill him,” said the tall man.
“We've already used traps before at the mansion. They won't fall for it so easily,” the Second Prince replied.
“No! Even if they suspect it, they need to confirm whether the body double is real or not. They will definitely take action,” the man insisted confidently.
The others nodded in agreement, suggesting that they could try this method.
The Second Prince straightened, his eyes scanning everyone, and said, “Then let's prepare according to this plan. Deploy the elite forces throughout the city, and what about Lundham City? It's been days without any news. Send someone to investigate.”
“Yes,” everyone nodded and then stood up and left.
The Second Prince watched everyone leave and then walked towards the rear.
Residential area.
Inside a decrepit dwelling, the plaster on the walls was patchy and peeling, and the wooden table in the corner was covered in scratches.
Two men dressed like Patrolling Guards sat around the table, legs crossed, chatting.
“Slacking off here, hope we don't get into trouble!”
“Just going through the motions. With the Commander and the Intelligence Minister gone, if we actually find something, we'd be asking for death!”
“How high level are these people anyway, to make the Commander disappear without a trace like that?”
“Could it be a hero?”
“If it were a hero, they wouldn't sneak around killing people, they'd come out in the open. Just be careful later and go through the motion of searching, no need to overdo it.”
As they talked, the sound of troops assembling came from outside.
The two men looked at each other, hung their Longswords back on, and walked straight out the door.
Once the sound of the troops had faded,
from the shadows in the corner, a wisp of smoke slowly drifted out and condensed into a curvaceous woman.
She leaned against the window, frowning deeply as she watched the Guard Team search house by house in the distance.
The City's Commander and the Intelligence Minister had disappeared as well?
“Who exactly is in the city!”
She was certain it wasn't one of their own.
They'd had a meeting in the morning, speculating who had killed the Minister of Political Affairs, and in the afternoon, two more had gone missing, both high-level professionals.
Their adversary was even more formidable than they had anticipated.
“Hope it's not that kid's people.”
In the dimly lit private room.
Because of the situation in the city, the tavern had no guests staying.
Wu Heng figured it would be fine to stay one night as long as he didn't make too much noise.
He sat by the window and waited for a while.
Glenda and Bella flew back in from outside.
“Didn't find anything special.”
Bella added, “Nothing on my side either. The city is too chaotic, the streets are full of moving level beams.”
“It seems we underestimated him. Only those who stay calm can achieve great things,” Wu Heng remarked.
Glenda pondered for a moment and said, “Could the Second Prince be dead, and these people are just acting in his name?”
Wu Heng and the other two Ghosts looked at her all at once–it was a new theory to consider.
“The Second Prince dead?” Xiao Xiao widened her eyes.
Wu Heng also thought about this possibility and said, “That's possible, or he might be under control, used as a puppet.”
“Yeah, that makes sense,” Glenda agreed.
At that moment, the sound of the second round of searches came from outside.
Wu Heng got up and said, “Let's head back to the Zombie World.”
The Three Ghosts returned to his body.
Wu Heng opened the boundary door inside one of the rooms and walked straight in.
Upon exiting the boundary door, Wu Heng found himself still in the prison's monitoring room.
He released the Ghost and approached the monitors, “Enlarge the thief's room.”
The screen was filled with individual surveillance feeds, showing the thief curled up on the iron bed, staying quiet.
“Didn't they experiment on him?” Glenda asked.
“Not sure,” answered Wu Heng, then continued, “Xiao Xiao, go see where the Alchemy Skeleton is and have it bring the experiment logs here.”
“Okay, uncle,” Xiao Xiao flew out.
It wasn't long before Xiao Xiao returned, “The Skeleton is on its way.”
The door to the monitoring room was knocked, and the Alchemy Skeleton walked in, holding a notebook it always carried.
“Let's look at the experiment log.”
The notebook was handed over, and Wu Heng flipped it open to check.
He skipped past the experiments on ordinary animals, focusing his attention on the logs for “Single Cell 202.”
Initially, there were notes on the thief's level and physical condition.
Then came the experiment records.
In the morning, the subject had ingested a Level 1 Corpse Core, showed clear signs of pain and struggle; externally, there were signs of cyanosis and bloodshot eyes.
After 10 minutes, the symptoms subsided, and a half hour later, the subject returned to normal.
At 8 pm, a second Level 1 Corpse Core was ingested, with similar reactions as the first time.
But the recovery was a bit quicker.
There were just two entries, after all, only a day had passed.
Wu Heng glanced at the Alchemy Skeleton.
The method it chose for experimenting on the thief was ingestion of Corpse Cores, not infection with a virus.
This method did coincide with a Zombie King's experiments.
Zombie Kings were raised by feeding on Corpse Cores.
“How is it?” asked Glenda.
The other two Ghosts also looked over expectantly.
Wu Heng said, “Fed a Corpse Core in the morning and in the evening; but with high level, high antibodies, there were no signs of transforming into zombies.”
Xiao Xiao said, “He won't develop superpowers, will he?”
“Maybe,” Wu Heng speculated.
Glenda perused the log as well and suggested, “If not, then we'll resort to the virus. Your superpowers are uncontrollable. If we awaken something special, it could be dangerous.”
“That's true,” Wu Heng agreed, “Tomorrow we'll switch to injecting the virus.”
Feeding Corpse Cores could potentially awaken superpowers, which means the transformed skeletons might be more powerful in the later stages.
But for now, Wu Heng's priority was to raise a few controllable Level 20 skeletons; experiments on superpowers could wait.
The Skeleton Alchemist nodded and updated the plan for the next day in the notebook.
“Let's go. We still have two other subjects to experiment on tomorrow,” Wu Heng said curtly.
They left the monitoring room.
They all then headed towards the prison area.
Wu Heng opened up his Mansion Skill, revealing the Commander and the Intelligence Minister trapped inside iron cages.
Seeing Wu Heng appear, both their faces showed fear and disbelief.
They scrutinized Wu Heng's appearance closely.
The Intelligence Minister shouted, “You're Wu Heng, Wu Heng from Gold and Silver Island.”
“Wu Heng! It's you, you actually dared to lay hands on us,” the Commander also realized and yelled loudly.
Wu Heng thought for a moment, and two palms appeared out of thin air inside the Mansion Skill, repeatedly slapping the faces of both men.
That immediately silenced them.
“Take them out.”
Kai Xiu and Shanshan came out, leading the two.
“You are an associate of the union, Wu Heng. Kidnapping political figures, do you know the consequences?”
“According to the rules between nobles, I can pay my own ransom for freedom.”
The two were pushed forward, still loudly voicing their thoughts.
“Go on in, don't cause yourself more trouble,” Wu Heng said as he opened two nearby prison cells and ordered the Skeletons to escort them inside.
Inside Cell 202.
The thief pressed against the side of the iron door, eyes widened, listening to the conversation outside.
He really did kidnap them.
