Chapter 343: Chapter 343: Stray Cat
She shrugged one shoulder, her cold demeanor completely unshaken.
"DNA tests prove biology, not identity. Even if the results say you’re biologically connected to Mrs. Gu, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re her daughter. There’s cloning, experimental science... perhaps you’re just a very sophisticated copy."
Gu Jin’s serious tone made her absurd ideas sound like facts.
For a moment, even Gu Aihan looked as if she didn’t know how to argue back.
Gu Jin gave her a faint, cold smile, though it barely reached her eyes.
"Or maybe you’re a stray cat Mrs. Gu once fed, and you mistakenly think you’re family now."
That was the final straw. Gu Jihu openly burst into laughter, no longer able to hold it in.
Even Mrs. Gu turned her face away, though her shoulders were clearly shaking.
Gu Aihan, meanwhile, looked like steam might shoot out of her ears.
"You—! How dare you—!"
"How dare I?" Gu Jin asked, her tone calm but cutting.
"You were the one trying to frame me first. I’m only offering logical explanations for your ’DNA evidence.’ If you have nothing better to say, stop wasting everyone’s time."
Gu Jin’s cold, sharp words silenced the room again.
Just then, a maid entered the room with a silver tray. On it was a plate of delicate, colorful sweets. The soft aroma of sugar and cream filled the room, breaking the heavy tension.
"Your sweets, Miss," the maid said hesitantly, glancing around at the tense faces.
Gu Jin gave a small nod of acknowledgment. She walked over, picked up a piece, and calmly placed it in her mouth. Her cold expression didn’t change as she chewed slowly, savoring the taste.
"It’s good," she said simply as if nothing dramatic had just happened.
The casualness of her action made everyone else in the room freeze. It was like Gu Jin wasn’t bothered by anything, while the others were left struggling with their emotions.
But not everyone was calm.
"You!" Gu Aihan’s face was red with rage. Her fists clenched tightly, and she looked ready to explode. "You’re just doing this to mock me! You think you’re so smart!"
She took a step forward, looking like she might actually lunge at Gu Jin. But before she could do anything, Mrs. Gu’s sharp voice rang out.
"Enough, Aihan!" Mrs. Gu glared at her, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Then, Mrs. Gu turned to Gu Jihu, who had been standing quietly in the corner, observing everything.
"Jihu, tell me what’s going on," she said, her voice calmer but firm.
Gu Jihu straightened and stepped forward, his expression serious. "Mom, I’ve been looking into this for a while," he began. "There’s a chance that Gu Jin and Aihan were... swapped at birth."
The words hit Mrs. Gu like a thunderbolt. "Swapped?" she repeated, her voice trembling slightly.
"Yes," Gu Jihu said, his tone steady. "If you look at Gu Jin carefully, you’ll see the resemblance. She looks just like Dad’s mother, Grandma Gu."
Mrs. Gu turned her gaze to Gu Jin. She studied her face intently, her sharp eyes noticing the striking features she had overlooked before.
The deep red, ruby-like eyes. The shape of her face. The way she carried herself with calm confidence.
It was uncanny.
Her heart skipped a beat as she thought of her mother-in-law, a woman she had admired deeply. Gu Jin looked exactly like her.
Mrs. Gu’s eyes then shifted to Gu Aihan.
Sure, Aihan shared some features with her. But now that she was looking closely, the resemblance wasn’t as strong as she had once believed.
For a moment, Mrs. Gu felt a wave of doubt wash over her.
As if sensing her hesitation, Gu Jin suddenly spoke, her voice calm and sharp.
"There are many plastic surgeons in this world," she said bluntly. "It’s not impossible that someone might use surgery to... enhance their resemblance to a family."
Her words hung in the air like a challenge.
Gu Aihan’s face turned pale. "You’re lying!" she shouted, her voice high-pitched and frantic. "You’re just making things up to confuse everyone!"
But Gu Jin didn’t respond. She simply smiled—a cold, knowing smile that made it clear she wasn’t worried at all.
In her mind, Gu Jin thought, I’ll never let someone who isn’t biologically related to me take my mother. Not after all I’ve been through.
She thanked herself for learning medicine in her previous life. She had seen through the little tricks people like Aihan used, and she wasn’t about to lose this battle.
Gu Jihu, catching onto Gu Jin’s hints, took out his phone.
"I’ll have my subordinates look into this immediately," he said, his tone calm but firm.
Hearing this, panic flashed across Gu Aihan’s face. Her hands clenched tightly, and she stammered, "M-Maybe I’m... I’m Gu Jin’s twin sister! That’s possible, isn’t it?"
Gu Jin raised an eyebrow, unimpressed.
"Impossible," she said bluntly, her tone cutting. "You’re nothing like me. You’re a white lotus—a fake. And as far as I know, no one in the Gu Family should act like that."
Her words were calm but sharp, leaving no room for argument.
Mrs. Gu, who had been quietly listening, couldn’t help but nod slightly in her heart. She thought about all the times she had seen Aihan act overly sweet and pitiful to get what she wanted.
She’s right, Mrs. Gu admitted to herself. Aihan has always been... dramatic. But because I loved her so much, I let it slide.
"I don’t need to lie," Gu Jin said finally. "The truth always comes out, sooner or later."
Just as the tension in the room reached its peak, the heavy sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Everyone turned toward the door as Mr. Gu stepped in. His tall figure and sharp features exuded authority, and his presence immediately commanded attention.
"Dad!" Gu Aihan cried out, relief flashing across her face. She rushed toward him, clearly hoping to gain his support.
But before she could take more than a few steps, a thick green vine suddenly shot out of nowhere and curled around her ankle.
