The Mighty Mage -
Chapter 240: Gain?
Chapter 240: Chapter 240: Gain?
Gu Jin’s voice was laced with venom as the green vine tightened around the director’s neck.
The director’s eyes widened in terror, his hands clawing at the vine, trying to loosen its grip. He gasped for air, his fear growing as he saw the cold fury in Gu Jin’s eyes.
"You think this pathetic story would be enough to stop me?" Gu Jin continued.
Liang Bao thought Gu Jin was angry at the result and hurriedly patted Gu Jin’s back, "Jin’er don’t be angry! Please! He might be telling the truth."
"Yeah! Jin’er we can’t take someone’s life just because of anger." Lu Siyao advised worriedly.
Gu Jin has a bright future ahead and they don’t want to see her in jail because of mere moments of anger.
"Y...ou...leave...me...I...I...m..y....bac..ker...wi..ll...ki..ll....if...if...th...ey..know..."
Gu Jin chuckled,
"Oh? Don’t worry I will deal with them. Some people think I am a softie just because I hide my edges.
Even though I don’t remember my childhood memories much, I do remember using my own two legs to walk towards the orphanage.
Also, the method used to make this letter old is truly...disgusting. I can make much better than this."
Gu Jin knew how to make a paper look old, and just by touching the texture, she could identify whether the letter was old or not.
The director’s face grew paler as he realized she wasn’t buying any of the lies he had been feeding her.
"Y-you don’t understand... I was only following orders!" he stammered, his voice hoarse from the vine’s grip.
"Following orders, huh?" Gu Jin tightened the vine just enough to make him choke again before loosening it slightly.
"That’s always the excuse, isn’t it?"
Liang Bao and Lu Siyao exchanged glances.
Thank god Gu Jin knew some parts of her childhood otherwise, they might have believed this director’s words.
However, in their heart, they prayed that the director would speak.
The director didn’t know but once Gu Jin’s bloodlust was activated even truth wouldn’t stop her from taking away his(director’s) life.
Even though in the past 3 years Gu Jin had somewhat learned to restrain her killing intent, it was only restraining not changing.
She still hasn’t changed.
She could still kill people when she thought they were being annoying to her.
They have seen that side of her and wished no one would provoke her enough to activate that side of her.
Gu Jin bent down, her face inches away from the director’s, her voice low and threatening.
"Who gave you the orders? Who told you to forge this story about my past?"
The director’s mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. His eyes darted toward the door as if hoping for an escape.
"There’s no running from this," Gu Jin whispered.
"Tell me now, or I promise you, your backer will be dealing with a corpse."
Her eyes were cold. She looked at the director as if he was already a corpse.
The director for some reason felt Gu Jin could truly kill him.
His body turned temperature dropped and fear started to grip his heart.
The fear of death was so surreal that the director decided to tell whatever he knew.
Sweat dripped down the director’s face as he struggled to speak, his voice barely audible.
The vines around him loosened making it a bit easier for him to speak.
"A...a person contacted..."
The director’s body convulsed violently, his eyes rolling back as white foam began to drip from the corners of his mouth.
"What is happening?" Lu Siyao was shocked.
Gu Jin’s eyes narrowed, realizing what was happening.
"Poison," she muttered. "The mastermind behind him had maybe set some psychological barrier. As long as the director speaks about the mastermind, the poison activates."
Liang Bao rushed forward, checking the director’s pulse.
But it was too late. The director’s body jerked one final time before going limp.
"He’s dead," Liang Bao said, her voice flat. "Some kind of fast-acting toxin."
Gu Jin clenched her fists, her anger barely contained. "They silenced him," she said, her voice colder than ice.
"Whoever’s pulling the strings is watching closely."
Everything was planned, from assassination attempts to bribing the director.
Now even Gu Jin doesn’t believe that she belongs to an ordinary family.
If her parents had truly left her in the orphanage they wouldn’t have gone through so much trouble to sabotage her plan of knowing her background.
Liang Bao and Lu Siyao were thinking of how to deal with the director when the door was knocked and Han Xiao’s voice sounded,
"Director, can I come in?"
Before Liang Bao and Lu Siyao could react, Gu Jin retracted the vines, took a healing potion, and brushed it around the director’s neck.
Within the next few seconds, the mark around the director’s neck vanished.
"Come in." Gu Jin said calmly as she unlocked the door.
Liang Bao and Lu Siyao were shocked.
They hadn’t even planned how to deal with the director’s body and Gu Jin suddenly opened the door.
"Jin’er-"
Han Xiao froze, his words caught in his throat as his eyes darted to the director’s lifeless body on the floor.
His face paled, and he stumbled back.
"This... this can’t be happening," Han Xiao stammered, his voice shaking. "Did you... did you kill him?"
Gu Jin’s calm expression remained unchanged as she looked at Han Xiao.
"No, I didn’t," she replied evenly. "The director was poisoned before he could reveal anything useful."
Han Xiao’s eyes narrowed in suspicion, but Gu Jin continued before he could speak.
"If you’d like to check, the evidence is right here," she gestured to the director’s body.
"A fast-acting toxin designed to prevent him from speaking the truth has been implanted in him."
This was the reason why Gu Jin was so calm.
Even though the director was dead, Gu Jin couldn’t be arrested since after postmortem, one can know how long the fast-acting poison was placed in the body of the victim, and with a bit of investigation, Gu Jin could easily escape the charges.
However, in Han Xiao’s ears, the words hold different meanings.
Gu Jin was threatening him that if he didn’t keep quiet and tell the truth, he would die too.
"Y-you think I’m next?" Han Xiao stammered, his voice trembling slightly. "Are you saying... they’ve already set something up for me too?"
Gu Jin remained calm, her eyes narrowing slightly.
"I said, I am not behind this."
"Yes! Yes! You are not behind! You are not behind this!" Han Xiao took it as a hint and hurriedly nodded.
From Han Xiao’s expression, Gu Jin knew he didn’t believe her words.
Gu Jin held her forehead while Lu Siyao suddenly said,
"Really? Can you tell me what happened here then?"
Han Xiao instantly built up a story,
"The director was killed by an assassin who suddenly appeared."
"No!" Lu Siyao shook her head. "The forensic department will expose your lie. There was a fast-acting poison in his body even before we arrived. So your story of the assassin killing the director is matching."
"So you truly didn’t kill the director?" Han Xiao asked with surprise.
"Or what?" Lu Siyao snorted.
"Now go and report to the authorities." Gu Jin said.
Within the next few days, the matter was settled.
The reason was pretty simple, the fast-acting poison in the director’s body was planted a few days before.
At that time Gu Jin was admitted to the hospital while Liang Bao and Lu Siyao were with her.
So they were definitely not the ones who planted it, which means the director was killed by someone else.
One more thing that made the investigation officer feel less guarded against Gu Jin is...even when she proved her innocence she continued to help them check the matter.
To ensure she wasn’t tempering with any evidence she always had an investigation officer supervise her.
This created a good impression of Gu Jin in the minds of the investigation officer and they even thanked her at the end of their investigation.
Liang Bao and Lu Siyao were surprised by Gu Jin’s sudden kindness but they had much more important matters to worry about.
"Do you think the Ma family will take revenge on Jin’er?" Lu Siyao asked to Liang Bao worriedly.
Their time was up.
They didn’t find any useful information and even dragged Gu Jin into such a mess.
Soon both of them will leave Gu Jin, at that time what if the Ma family suddenly sends some assassin to kill her?
Liang Bao and Lu Siyao were worried.
"God! F*ck! I wish we had never made this trip! Now...see...we didn’t gain anything and has even provoked the anger of the Ma family.
Gu Jin smiled and said,
"Not really. I think we indeed gained something."
"Huh? Gu Jin what do you mean?" Lu Siyao was confused.
