The Mighty Mage
Chapter 160: Ranking

Chapter 160: Chapter 160: Ranking

She closed her eyes, taking deep breaths to calm herself. She had known this day would come, but the reality of it still hit her hard.

Hu.

It’s better to move on than to torture herself daily like this.

Long Yifan belonged to a wealthy family, his fiance belonged to a wealthy family too. He loved her and she loved him too...

There was no place for her.

It’s better if she likes him from a distance.

Gu Jin put aside her phone and entered the room to cultivate.

For the next few days, Gu Jin’s routine was packed.

She would cultivate from morning to afternoon, treat Jasmine for 2 hours, then cultivate her other element till evening, from evening she would focus on her alchemy.

She was so busy, that she hardly had any time to think about Long Yifan.

Well...that was a lie.

Gu Jin did think about Long Yifan. She would unconsciously search for Long Yifan’s picture and stare at it for a long while before going back to her routine.

On the day of her examination, Gu Jin reached the Magic School Academy one hour before the examination began.

Chu Hua who just happened to arrive at the school early due to some reason, walked up to Gu Jin voluntarily.

Gu Jin waited for her to spew some nonsense but Chu Hua’s words surprised her,

"Let’s cancel the duel."

"Hm?"

Chu Hua said in a serious voice,

"In fact when I proposed to have a duel, I was not thinking straight. I did so out of jealousy."

Gu Jin was surprised but she knew that Chu Hua was the heiress of the Chu Family so of course she wouldn’t be dumb enough to argue with a commoner.

No duel means less trouble, hence Gu Jin nodded without asking any question.

Chu Hua: "..."

She was waiting for Gu Jin to ask for the reason, however seeing Gu Jin’s apathetic reaction, Chu Hua was filled with frustration.

She gritted her teeth and said with a forced smile,

"You won’t ask why I decided to suddenly cancel the duel?"

Gu Jin looked at Chu Hua, her expression impassive.

"No," she replied simply. "It doesn’t matter to me."

Chu Hua’s forced smile faltered, but she quickly composed herself.

"Well, I appreciate your understanding," she said, her tone strained.

"I realized that we should focus on more important matters, given the current situation at the academy."

Seeing Gu Jin’s uninterested expression, Chu Hua continued,

"In fact, I realized that you were an orphan, I, on the other hand, am a daughter of a wealthy family.

Just based on the resources I am going to receive, you can never match my strength or position. Competing with you would be beneath me and a waste of my time."

Gu Jin’s eyes flickered with a hint of annoyance at Chu Hua’s arrogance, but she remained silent.

Her lack of reaction seemed to infuriate Chu Hua even more.

Gu Jin nodded, uninterested in further conversation.

"Good luck with your exam," she said, turning away and heading towards the examination hall.

Chu Hua was so angry that she wanted to spew fire.

However, when she remembered how Gu Jin had the same element as her and she could show how more powerful she(Chu Hua) was than her(Gu Jin), Gu Jin would definitely regret ignoring her words.

Hmph!

Thinking so Chu Hua felt happy.

The examination was easy, each student had to first showcase their rank and then cast a spell on a wooden human target.

Based on the damage done, the candidate will be given a mask ranging from D to O. O being the highest grade.

When Gu Jin entered the examination hall, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation. Students whispered amongst themselves, nervous energy palpable in the air.

Gu Jin, however, remained calm.

"Hey, who do you think will receive the most marks? I mean who would be the topper?"

"Isn’t it clear already? I have heard that a girl named Chu Hua had broken through to intermediate rank."

"What? Intermediate Rank? F*ck! She is as powerful as the legendary..."

Gu Jin was uninterested in the conversation and didn’t listen to it at all.

"Hey, I have heard that someone has a duel with Miss Chu?"

"Yes, I think her name was...Ji...Gu something. I don’t know."

"I know! Her name is Gu Jin and so far she has never cast a single spell. Hell, she didn’t even attend lectures.

Maybe she is trying to copy Miss Chu, but what she doesn’t know is that...Miss Chu devotes her time in cultivation and doesn’t roam around idly."

"True. I am truly looking forward to seeing how she gets beaten up by Chu Hua! It would be so fun!"

"Do you think, that Gu Jin would even be able to handle one attack from Miss Chu?"

Suddenly Meng Ran interrupted the conversation,

"I don’t want to sound mean, but that Gu Jin is a slacker. Let alone one attack, she wouldn’t even be able to withstand Hua’s aura during the battle."

All the students couldn’t help but laugh.

Of course, there were some who remained silent and didn’t participate in the conversation at all.

"Hua, where will the duel be held ?" One of the girls asked.

Chu Hua shook her head,

"The duel is canceled."

"What?"

"Why?"

"Did Gu Jin fortified?" Meng Ran asked. That was the first possibility that came to Meng Ran’s mind.

Chu Hua shook her head,

"She didn’t fortify, I offered the cancellation due to the circumstances."

"Why?" the students inquired.

Chu Hua glanced around, her expression shifting slightly as she chose her words carefully.

"It’s clear that Gu Jin won’t be able to match my strength, and continuing with the duel would only waste everyone’s time.

Not to mention, she is just an orphan, who almost has no access to good resources and I, on the other hand, have access to good resources. I didn’t want to bully her so I decided to cancel it."

Meng Ran, standing beside Chu Hua, praised her,

"Hua you are so kind!"

Gu Jin listened quietly as Chu Hua’s words echoed through the hallway. Despite the subtle jabs and underlying arrogance, Gu Jin chose not to react.

Some students looked in Gu Jin’s direction to see if she had some reaction but to their disappointment, she didn’t even spare a glance at the group of gossipers.

Disappointed they changed the subject.

Inside the hall, the examination proceeded systematically. Each student showcased their magical prowess, demonstrating their abilities to the best of their current ranks.

Finally, it was Chu Hua’s turn. The room fell silent as she stepped forward, all eyes on her.

She confidently showcased her intermediate rank, the light from the detection orb confirming her status. The students erupted in applause, their admiration evident.

"She’s amazing," someone whispered.

"Of course she is. Chu Hua is the best," another agreed.

Chu Hua then prepared to cast her spell. She took a deep breath, her eyes narrowing in concentration.

With a flourish, she summoned a blazing fireball, hurling it at the wooden target. The spell struck with force, leaving a charred mark on the target. The examiners nodded approvingly.

"O for rank and A for spell casting," the lead examiner announced.

The students cheered, praising Chu Hua’s performance. Meng Ran was particularly vocal, her voice ringing out above the others.

"See? This is why Chu Hua is the best. No one can compete with her."

Some students turned their attention back to Gu Jin, their expressions smug.

"And she thought she could duel Chu Hua," one of them said with a sneer.

Gu Jin’s indifference only seemed to fuel their derision.

"She must be regretting it now," another added.

Chu Hua, basking in the praise, looked at Gu Jin with a smug smile.

"I hope you understand now why I canceled the duel. It would have been too easy."

Ignoring the comments, Gu Jin waited patiently for her turn. She knew that actions spoke louder than words.

As the examination continued, the students’ performances varied, but none came close to matching Chu Hua’s marks.

Finally, it was Gu Jin’s turn. She stepped forward.

The room fell silent again, the students watching intently. Some were curious, others skeptical.

Meng Ran crossed her arms, a smirk playing on her lips. "Let’s see what the ’silent’ Gu Jin can do," she muttered.

Gu Jin approached the detection orb, placing her hand on it. The orb glowed brightly, revealing her intermediate rank.

There was a collective gasp from the students. Many had assumed she was still at the beginner level.

Meng Ran’s smirk faltered. "So what? Rank isn’t everything," she said loudly, trying to regain her composure.

In her heart, she was complaining as to why Gu Jin could reach the intermediate rank so early.

Wasn’t she an orphan?

An orphan has almost no access to high-class resources, without high-class resources a person can never advance smoothly, so why?

Why Gu Jin is so powerful?
