Chapter 142: Chapter 140: What Is Chasing Me in the Imperial Palace (First Update, Asking for Votes)
The lord resembled an angry lion, his gaze as sharp as knives pinned mercilessly on Yun Qi.
But Qi simply shook her head, appearing innocent and naive.
After a long wait, the lord dramatically pulled out the heavy dining chair and strode towards Yun Qi.
Yun Qi also pulled out a chair, crossing her arms behind her back, waiting for him to approach.
Yun Qiucheng and Yun Kuang couldn’t help but feel a little nervous, as a person like the lord, who was born into privilege and power, would never tolerate being mocked.
Yun Kuang was even ready to leap forward and shield Qi if it came to that.
Blocking would be futile; he was a weak fighter, but he could at least cover for Qi.
However, when the lord reached Yun Qi, his cold eyes locked onto hers, he took a deep breath, and after a moment, spoke with a tone full of apology:
"It’s all my fault, Master Xiao Qi, can you forgive me?"
"Well, you’ll have to tell me what exactly your faults are." Yun Qi blinked her big eyes, maintaining an innocent and bewildered appearance.
The lord took another deep breath, restraining his temper, "I shouldn’t have used private justice, shouldn’t have imprisoned Mr. Yun, shouldn’t have been arrogant and rude to you all."
"That’s right, after all, there are always people beyond people, heavens beyond heavens. On the island, you are the lord, above all others, and feared by everyone. But in the world, there are many more powerful than you. You must maintain a reverence for others and not consider yourself too highly."
The lord, looking like a student being reprimanded, nodded at every sentence from Qi, his expression particularly sincere.
"Alright, Qi isn’t someone who ignores others in peril. You just have a rather explosive temper, but fortunately, you haven’t done anything murderous, you’re someone who can still be saved."
After speaking, Yun Qi pointed to the chair behind her.
The lord, perceptive as ever, pulled the chair in front of her, helped her sit down, and then drew his own chair, sitting in front of her obediently.
"Yesterday, upon meeting you, I already knew you were hiding many things, not just from me, but from others as well. Can you tell now, why are you so concerned about the palace’s Feng Shui?"
"Because there’s something in the Imperial Palace trying to kill me," the lord spoke in one breath, feeling much relieved thereafter.
"Your local Pope also has spells similar to the mainland’s Feng Shui mysticism, why not seek help from the Priest?"
"The entity hunting me is of great significance to Langqi Island; I dare not let the local Pope know, otherwise, they would suspect that I was punished by a god. A person abandoned by God has no right to be a lord, nor even the right to live."
"What is it?" Yun Kuang couldn’t resist interjecting.
The lord looked up, his gleaming eyes reflecting the majestic totem sculpture hanging high on the gateway, that of a Great Peacock God surrounded by golden light.
After listening to the lord’s detailed explanation, Yun Qi understood. In Langqi Island’s local religion and folk belief, the Big Peacock was revered as a guardian god.
Legend has it that in ancient times, the ancestors of Langqi Island were mainland fishermen. One day, while sailing out to sea, they encountered a storm; their boat was capsized, and food and water were swallowed by the waves.
The surviving ancestors clung to planks driftwood in the vast ocean, on the brink of exhaustion when a Big Peacock flew over from the horizon, guiding them to the nearest island, which is Langqi Island.
Later, those ancestors settled on the island and prospered, giving rise to the current Langqi Island and its people.
The Big Peacock that guided them remained on the island, transforming into a guardian god.
"The Great Peacock God is the supreme deity in the hearts of the islanders; every lord must receive the Peacock God’s approval to ascend to power. Master Xiao Qi, can you believe it? I am the only lord in history to be hunted by the Peacock God, so how dare I seek help from the Priest?"
"So that’s how it is," Yun Kuang said, gazing at the lord, suddenly finding him not as terrifying as before; instead, he even seemed somewhat pitiable.
The lord, living well, suddenly rejected by his own deity and even pursued for assassination; no wonder he was so insecure.
"What’s this got to do with the palace?" Yun Qi asked.
"It’s said that the Great Peacock God was severely injured while battling the Sea Demon to protect Langqi Island, its Primordial Spirit exhausted, and the remaining consciousness hid within the Peacock totems. So every time in my dreams, the Peacock God trying to kill me flies out from the totems. Look..." the lord gestured.
Following his point, everyone saw Peacock totems almost everywhere within the Imperial Palace.
"The palace is inherited over generations, with a total of five hundred Peacock totems. I can’t let people know I’m being pursued by the Peacock God, so I don’t dare touch these totems. Do you know? Each night before bed, I think, from which totem will the Peacock God emerge today?"
The lord closed his eyes, recalling those terrifying days.
Every night, in his dreams, he would see the Great Peacock God fly out from a totem, its wings stirring scorching flames, claws mercilessly reaching for his face.
He could only run for his life, his cries for help echoing through the vast Imperial Palace, but no one came to his aid.
Enduring such torment over time greatly consumed his physical and mental strength.
"So you’re planning to build a palace, as long as it has no Peacock totems, the Peacock God won’t hunt you there." Yun Qiucheng asked.
"Yes, I initially thought of inviting a Feng Shui Xuanxue Master to set up an auspicious array around the palace, so the Great Peacock God couldn’t enter; then I’d be safe. But the local Pope suspects me, and I can only let the High Priest get involved."
Yun Qi chuckled, shaking her head slightly, "So it’s like this. With the High Priest involved, multiple conflicts arose with my uncle, slowing down the palace construction. And you, constantly disturbed by the Peacock God, may not live to see your palace completed."
"So am I doomed now?" The lord lifted his head, looking pitiable, a stark contrast to his previous arrogant self.
"Of course, meeting Qi means there’s hope." Yun Qi laughed playfully, extending her small hand to seriously pat his shoulder, "The black aura on your forehead has already spread to the philtrum, and when it covers your whole face, not even an immortal could save you. Since the Peacock God intends to kill you, he’ll certainly come tonight."
"What should I do to prepare?" the lord grabbed Yun Qi’s hand tightly, as if catching a lifeline.
Yun Kuang, very displeased, pulled Yun Qi’s hand away and even dared to glare at the lord.
"Relax, tonight Qi will make arrangements."
By noon, as usual, Yun Qi needed her nap; the lord dared not disturb her and let her return.
On the way back to her room, Yun Qi met Jiapeng leading a patrol.
"Uncle shoulder strap," Yun Qi smiled sweetly, "Were you looking for me?"
