Chapter 115: Chapter 113 Swallow Three More Bags of Desiccant for Your Entertainment
The servant brought the fruits and desserts, placing them in front of them.
A bright full moon hung in the sky, so large and round, seemingly suspended above everyone in the vast courtyard.
The moonlight, clear as flowing water, shone on Yun Qi’s profile, enveloping her in a layer of holy glow.
Seeing she couldn’t persuade them, Yun Qi had no choice but to give up, obediently picking up a piece of cake with both hands and starting to eat.
Having heard Yun Qi was coming, Meng Ze threw a tantrum in his room, refusing to come over no matter what.
The servant couldn’t persuade him, so Jiang Yun personally went, coaxing, deceiving, and threatening to drag him over.
Meng Ze wore a luxurious children’s formal suit, complete with a bow tie at the collar, looking like a little gentleman. Jiang Yun dragged him over, face drooping, glaring at Yun Qi and speaking impolitely, "Who let you come to my house? Don’t you know that you’re not welcome here?"
Jiang Yun and Meng Wenzhou hurriedly covered their son’s mouth.
Jiang Yun laughed and said to Yun Qi, "Little Master, don’t mind him. This kid has been spoiled by us. I’ll make sure to discipline him later."
Yun Qi shook her head, "Qi will not be angry with children who don’t understand."
"Right, right, my son is the most troublesome one. It’s all our fault for spoiling him. He can’t compare to the Little Master," Jiang Yun quickly agreed.
Initially baffled by his parents’ comments, Meng Ze felt a rush of anger. Now seeing his parents fawning over this outsider, he was even more discouraged, slumping on the sofa like a salted fish, and asked dejectedly, "Why did you call me here? If there’s nothing, I’m going back to sleep."
Jiang Yun knew her son was sulking and quickly coaxed him, "Don’t be so resistant. Mom has no special intentions. She just wants you to spend the Mid-Autumn Festival with the Little Master. You don’t have to do anything, just act as usual, and the Little Master will surely see if anything’s amiss."
That sounded reasonable!
After all, Meng Ze was only five and a half years old; his mother’s coaxing worked.
"Okay, I’ll listen to Mom."
He sat up, tilted his head to look at the fruits and desserts on the table, his long eyelashes fluttering, his big eyes full of hesitation, obviously seriously contemplating what he should eat.
A moment later, he reached for a mooncake, gritting his teeth, and used his little hands to tear open the packaging.
Jiang Yun quickly signaled to Yun Qi, urging her to pay attention to what her son was doing.
So Yun Qi widened her eyes, and so did everyone else, including Yun Qiuce.
For fear of missing any of Meng Ze’s little moves.
Then they saw Meng Ze tear open the packaging and take out the small packet of desiccant inside, bite open a corner, and pour the desiccant onto the mooncake, opening his mouth wide to bite—
"Wait!" Meng Wenzhou shouted loudly.
Meng Ze turned his head, looking at him in confusion, his big eyes blinking, "Dad, what is it?"
Before Meng Wenzhou could speak, Jiang Yun spoke up. "Son, what... what are you doing?"
"Eating mooncake, what’s wrong with that?"
The five-and-a-half-year-old boy felt extremely wronged at this moment. Not only did his mother like that girl from the Yun Family, but even his father seemed to be very nice to her.
Had he ceased to be their favorite little darling? Even eating a mooncake, he was being told off!
The unique possessiveness of a child was at play!
"Is this how you eat mooncakes? Have you always eaten them this way?" Meng Wenzhou finally managed to form words.
"Yes, I’ve always eaten them like this, sprinkle some seasoning and eat it. But I don’t like the seasoning pack; it tastes weird, so I just pour a little each time."
Meng Wenzhou and Jiang Yun exchanged a glance and looked at Yun Qi.
Yun Qi blinked her big eyes, looking very innocent.
A moment later, both parents covered their faces.
No wonder he had a stomachache every Mid-Autumn Festival; all this time, their darling son had been treating desiccant as a seasoning pack.
Meng Wenzhou rubbed his face and asked Jiang Yun, "Didn’t you tell him that desiccant is not edible?"
"Well... I thought you told him."
"I thought it was obvious and didn’t need to be said."
Both looked up at the sky, as if realizing that every Mid-Autumn Festival, their family had never fully gathered together.
Meng Wenzhou, citing work as an excuse, would work overtime, and Jiang Yun would often be out socializing with wealthy ladies, drinking and showing off jewelry and necklaces.
...
This year, because of inviting the Little Master, the family of three finally took time to gather together.
And since both parents were busy, the son was often left to the servants. The servants certainly wouldn’t take too much initiative, nor dare to manage too much.
Thus...
Yun Qi spread her little hands, "I told you he was fine."
Finally relieved, Aunt Jiang’s firm attitude almost led Qi to doubt herself.
Meng Wenzhou covered his face, "He might have some issues; I need to take him to the hospital to have his brain checked."
"There’s nothing wrong with his brain. The little brother is smart," Yun Qi said with certainty, her childish voice crisp and carrying a unique resoluteness.
Meng Ze shot her a puzzled glance. Was this annoying girl speaking well of him?
"I’ve always told you to spend more time with the child, but you never listened. See, almost turned him into an idiot," Meng Wenzhou began to blame his wife.
Jiang Yun was also feeling wronged, "Who is the one always claiming to be busy with work and stuck at the office? Who is the one who prefers hiding in the garage playing on his phone instead of coming inside? You don’t even accompany me, let alone the child, yet when it comes to blaming someone, you’re the first to jump in."
Meng Wenzhou wanted to say something else, but Yun Qiuce quickly interrupted, "I think now isn’t the time for mutual accusations. Aren’t you afraid the young master might get angry and gulp down three packets of desiccant just to entertain you?"
His words left both parents feeling embarrassed.
After a moment of silence, Meng Wenzhou spoke first, "I admit it’s my fault. I won’t let it happen again. I’ll make time to spend with you all."
Jiang Yun: "Since you’re saying that, then I’ll also spend more time with the kids, reducing gatherings with my friends."
The atmosphere shifted from tense and awkward to relaxed, even a bit warm.
At this moment, Meng Ze innocently asked, "Mom, Dad, it’s okay now? Can I eat my mooncake?"
"No!" the couple shouted simultaneously.
***
When leaving the Meng Family, Jiang Yun insisted on offering a reward, but Yun Qi firmly refused, resulting in Yun Qiuce and Jiang Yun pushing a money pouch back and forth between them.
Meng Ze had already been taken aside by his father for a lecture. The little child preemptively felt the dread of a worldview overturned.
No one told him that thing wasn’t edible, wasn’t it a seasoning?
Thinking that way, a stomachache became not the scary part; the scary part was that his short life was now marked by an anecdote that could be laughed at for a lifetime.
So his big eyes were red, and the little boy bit his lip to hold back the tears.
Looking up, he saw Yun Qi not far away, that annoying girl still had an innocent look and even had the mood to yawn.
How infuriating!
In the end, Yun Qi didn’t accept any money from the Meng Family and went home with Yun Qiuce by car.
