Chapter 99: A Secret For A Secret

"I will have the details in two days time, my lady."

When walking down the hallways, she noticed a sign she didn’t notice when she first entered, it read "A secret for a secret." The writing was almost eerie, it made her feel physical discomfort...

She quickly turned her head away from it and tried to calm down. The sign glowed, there was no doubt in that. But she was the only one who could see that it was imbued with some kind of magic. Dimitri shook his head, he couldn’t see it at all!

It somehow made sense now. No wonder... She was reminded of her secret, that fact that she wasn’t the true Adeline... It was because of the intelligence guild!

They must have enchanted it so that people feel compelled to spill their secrets. That must be it... Right? That secret began to haunt her slowly. She took over the life of someone else. What about the real Adeline? How was she? Where was she?

None of her questions could be answered. She had no clue about her. The Goddess wouldn’t tell her anything anyway. She kept too many secrets from her. Sometimes she didn’t think she could trust her.

But in this crazy world, she was the only other person who knew the truth, and she needed that companionship... Otherwise she would lose her mind.

As they left the store, Adeline felt a strange mixture of relief and nervousness. She knew that they were very capable, they would have the information... It should make her feel relieved but she didn’t...

As she came closer and closer to the truth, she would be pushed further into danger. She turned to look at Dimitri who smiled gently at her. She felt more assured with him by her side.

Once they reached the manor, the estate was eerily silent. Adeline’s eyes darted around the empty garden paths, the still hedges, and the silent trees, her unease deepening.

Or maybe it was just her imagination, but she just couldn’t shake the feeling off. They were in danger.

The Duke knew of her actions. He knew she sneaked into his study and stole the letters. It was about time he retaliated.

She turned to Dimitri, "I need you to teach me some of your sword moves!"

He was taken aback at first but he quickly agreed that it would be best if she learnt some self-defense techniques. He led her to the garden where he used to practice. He looked around to see if anyone was there.

He was used to seeing Everett stare at him as he trained, he wouldn’t even bother hiding the venom at this point. Even though he wasn’t here, he somehow felt the piercing gaze on his back.

It made Dimitri very uncomfortable. He shook off the feeling and tossed her a wooden sword.

He made sure to teach her proper stance and basic moves, there was only so much she could learn within a day. Adeline followed his example, her movements a bit stiff at first, but she adjusted quickly.

To his surprise, she was picking it up very quickly. He felt a hint of jealousy too.

"Not bad, not bad at all..." He praised.

He struggled so hard with a sword while the Kendrick siblings got it so easily! So unfair! It was all in good fun. He felt happy she could pick it up so easily.

She didn’t care about his praise, she could barely hear them. All her focus was on the sword and her body.

Adeline sighed and gave it her all. No, it wasn’t talent, she was able to observe and pick up the techniques with ease because she was mentally older.

When practising the sword, Dimitri was able to imbue it with his wind powers. If he was able to land a hit on anyone, the wind would sweep them up a bit and send them a few feet back.

It was a technique he came up with. He was quite proud of it, usually wind mages don’t use the sword.

There were limited things to do with a sword, unlike fire and earth, wind wasn’t too compatible with a sword, just like water. For Dimitri, the best course of action would be to join the Mage Tower. He was aware of this.

After this whole ordeal is over, he will make the journey and take the test. When they reached the information guild, he was able to make a request of his own. He asked for more details regarding the Mage Tower, the more he knew the better.

As they were training, he felt something move. His element was the wind, he could feel everything around him, and something was amiss.

When he turned, one of the huge pine trees that lined the entrance of the garden started to fall. How could that be?! The target was them obviously. His eyes narrowed, and instinctively he used his powers.

He raised his hands and summoned a powerful gust of wind that went head on against the falling tree. After being hit with an opposing force, it fell in the opposite direction. He hoped that whoever tried to make it fall on them would be caught under it.

Adeline didn’t realise what happened until the tree hit the ground, she turned to look in shock. She stumbled back, her heart was pounding.

So it has already begun? Their target had to be Dimitri, he was the only one who practised here. Her eyes narrowed as she thought of the man who might have caused this.

The Duke has been taking advantage of the fact that they didn’t have evidence. Before anyone could meddle, Adeline ran towards the fallen tree, she hoped to find any evidence of this being orchestrated.

Unfortunately, she didn’t. The tree trunk was spoiled from the inside and it looked like it fell because it couldn’t support its weight anymore. Was this just a coincidence or was there something far more sinister at play.

Adeline felt frustrated. Dimitri stood beside her as she looked at the rotting trunk.

"I guess it’s just a coincidence." She muttered in dismay.

"Don’t worry, have some faith in me. They won’t be able to hurt a hair on my body." He said with confidence.

Seeing his smile, Adeline felt like everything will be alright too. He was the future Arch Mage, he climbed up ranks within a few years and took complete control over the Mage Tower.

She knew his capabilities. This time she just decided to trust him.

Dimitri didn’t take it to heart, if he was going to take the test, he was going to be facing far more dangerous things, it was time for him to grow stronger mentally and physically.

He thought over some things, the Duke was targeting him, not Adeline. He wouldn’t dare to touch her, she was the daughter of the Marquess of course.

He should put some distance between them, if he was in danger he knew he could protect himself, but he couldn’t say for certain he could protect her. He was not that strong enough yet.

"I think you should stop being near me. It would be for the best." He proposed solemnly.

"What?!" She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
