Chapter 96: Don’t Go Towards the Light
"I’m sorry, but you must leave right away."
The servant tried to close the door, but Adeline would not have any of this. She bent down and slipped from under the servant’s legs.
!!!
She came this far, wheezing, panting, struggling, she wasn’t going to let a servant stop her now. She will meet the Duchess!
"You!"
"Yeah, yeah. It is me. Get mad at me later, okay? I have stuff to do." Adeline brushed her off.
The servant didn’t know if she could grab this unruly child and throw her out. That would definitely not bode well for her.
Honestly, she was so surprised that she needed a second to digest what just happened.
A young girl just got inside the room from under her legs! Who would do such a thing? She certainly didn’t expect the Marquess’ daughter to do such a thing. No wonder he sent her away to learn etiquette from Her Grace!
The Duchess was sleeping, she didn’t see what Adeline did. Adeline thought that it was for the best. Who knows? Once she gets healed she might discipline her for being unruly. Even though it literally saved her life!
Before the servant intervened, Adeline already poured out holy powers from her hands and onto the Duchess.
The Duchess was twisting and turning, she was having a nightmare. But out of nowhere, a bright light beckoned her... It felt like it was saving her from the darkness.
"I know people say ’do not go towards the light’ but it would be great if you did." She muttered as she kept pouring in holy power.
’This girl! Why is she telling Her Grace to go towards the light?! Does she want her to die?’
No, it was in fact the opposite. Adeline was trying to cure the Duchess. If she could hear the servant’s thoughts, she would throw hands. Look at her working so hard! How dare you doubt her?
The servant did not stop Adeline though, because although she didn’t understand what exactly was happening, she knew that it was helping.
Commoners rarely had any contact with the Holy power, so it wasn’t surprising that she did not know. Adeline was glad that she was not attempting to drag her away.
Colour slowly returned to the Duchess’ face. She could see the symptoms of fatigue that once overcame the Duchess slowly fade away. And soon, she opened her eyes.
"It’s a miracle you didn’t contract this illness." Adeline wiped her forehead and told the servant.
Seeing her grace awake, she felt relieved. She then fell in thought after hearing Adeline’s words. Maybe because of her upbringing, she had better immunity? She was a commoner, she didn’t really live a sheltered life.
That would make sense.
The Duchess blinked, slowly adjusting to the light filtering into the room. Her vision cleared, and she saw Adeline standing before her.
Adeline... That unmistakable pink hair and the servant she trusted. Why was this child here? She got up and realised that she felt light...
She felt energised and much better. It was like she did not get the illness in the first place.
She turned to her servant hoping to get some answers.
Her voice was still weak but was gaining strength with each word. "What are you doing here? And-"
Adeline gave a sheepish but triumphant smile, not entirely sure how the Duchess would react. "I... May have used a little holy power to help you feel better."
The Duchess blinked, taking a moment to process what she’d just heard. Holy power?
She looked toward her servant, who was still dumbstruck, eyes wide with astonishment. Clearly, she was as baffled as the Duchess was.
"How..." How did she have holy power?
"Adeline... how did you come by such a gift?" the Duchess asked, her voice laced with wonder.
"I just do." Adeline shrugged, no point in giving the whole history. She sighed and continued with a sad tone, "I would have come earlier had I known you were here..."
The Duchess immediately frowned, she didn’t know? The Duchess was a wise person, she didn’t need Adeline to carefully spell it out for her.
The Duchess turned to look at her servant, and the servant merely shrugged. They had been exchanging letters with the Duke for a while.
He kept writing in the letters that he was looking for specialists to treat her... The Duchess was aware of how dangerous this illness was. She personally saw the extent of the damage caused by this illness.
She specifically instructed her husband to tell everyone in the estate about her condition and where she was... She didn’t want them to accidentally wander here and contract it themselves.
The Duchess stayed silent for a moment before asking Adeline, "So, how did you find me?"
Adeline smiled and quickly produced a butterfly made of light. This completely took the Duchess aback. It was so beautiful... It felt like she was looking at ’life’.
Adeline explained how she sent the butterfly to look for her, she answered honestly that she thought something was amiss and snuck into the Duke’s study where she found the letters hidden away from everyone.
The Duchess was deep in thought. What she said made sense but... At the same time, she couldn’t believe that her husband was doing this...
She hid away the letters she stole to show the Duchess if need be. But this wasn’t part of the plan she came up with...
To implement the plan she needed the Duchess to say something... She was waiting for those words.
The Duchess studied her with an intensity that made Adeline grow nervous, but her gaze softened after a moment.
"Then, Adeline, I owe you a great debt. I had believed the illness would take me, that I would never see my family again."
And it was go time, Adeline thought to herself.
"Your Grace, I ask of you one favour." She looked up at the Duchess with a pitiful look.
"Of course, what do you need?"
"It’s about my companion Dimitri, I understand the importance one must give to status and titles. I didn’t want to for him to be mistreated, I told everyone he was my distant cousin..."
The Duchess frowned but listened, she then asked, "Do you want me to not expose you?"
Adeline shook her head, "I want you to tell a lie, your Grace. I want you to tell everyone that you will be adopting him..."
The Duchess froze. That was an outrageous request...
"Why do you want me to lie?" The Duchess observed Adeline carefully. She had her own thoughts, especially after she learnt how her husband his the matter from everyone...
What motives did this child have? She asked her to lie about adopting him, she didn’t ask her to adopt him. She ruled out that the West wanted to place one of theirs in her Duchy. Her eyes narrowed.
Adeline looked at her with confidence, that once pitiful expression was gone.
One look at her and it was enough to say that you shouldn’t underestimate her because of her age.
"I have my reasons. But I believe I am owed this favour."
