Chapter 82: Want Me to Go?

"I know, I know. You think I am insane... But, it’s something I have to do." She drooped a bit. She had been carrying around this worry for so long. She was afraid of all the problems she caused her dad.

She wanted to share some of his burdens and deal with the problems that arose because of her.

"If it’s something my lady has to do, then I am at her service."

Adeline smiled at him. She felt relieved. She could finally share her plans with someone instead of bottling up her worries.

Adeline leaned closer and made sure her voice was quiet, "I am here to expose the Duke. He has an illegitimate son, the Duchess is barren. He hopes to get the Duchess to adopt his son without her knowing the child is his."

Dimitri frowned. He understood that what was happening was bad, but why was Adeline doing this all alone and by herself? How did she even come across this secret in the first place?

"He plans to let his child inherit everything. He is a power-hungry man that has to be stopped. And..." Sensing the question that Dimitri had she continued, "The Goddess asked me to do this."

Dimitri frowned and nodded. He understood but he felt this was too dangerous. He thought the same as her. A man who dared to do this would do anything to make sure his scheme wasn’t uncovered.

He had heard about the fight between her and her father when she went to the Northern Duchy... The Marquess did not hide his disdain towards the Goddess.

She was sending out a child on important missions that could put her life at risk! As much as he would love to agree with the Marquess, without the Goddess, he didn’t know if he would have met Adeline.

He never thought of himself to be religious, but he just might believe in this Goddess.

After a moment of silence, he asked, "Are you sure this is the only way? The Duke isn’t a small enemy to make, Adeline. Even the Duchess may have motives hidden from us."

"What you say makes sense... But I trust the Goddess. I know it’s risky but..."

She continued, "Anyway, that’s why I introduced you as a distant cousin who the Duchess herself invited. It will make him think that the Duchess may have other plans, he would think she wanted to adopt you."

He finally understood why she did what she did.

Dimitri looked thoughtful, piecing together her plan. "So he’ll worry that the Duchess, might be trying to place someone else in line to inherit the Duchy? That would make sense. If he believes he’s at risk of losing control, he’ll have to react."

Adeline nodded, "He will have to scramble to figure out a plan. He will make mistakes, and those mistakes will be our lead to finding evidence."

"So did you plan to introduce me as your distant cousin from the beginning? I only said I would come with you later... Haha." He awkwardly laughed.

Adeline shook her head in response, "Originally, I thought I’d spend time gaining the Duchess’s trust, working closely with her. I was planning on gradually investigating, learning the Duke’s routine, and watching for any sign of this illegitimate child."

She looked around once again to check that there was no one there, "But with the Duchess leaving for a few days, the opportunity to push the Duke to act presented itself. His worry and insecurity will make him more likely to slip up."

He had to admit, his lady was impulsive, clever, but impulsive.

Dimitri leaned back, nodding slowly. "Understood. I’ll be extra vigilant, and we’ll keep this under wraps. Whatever happens, I’m with you."

She reached out, placing a reassuring hand on his arm. "Thank you, Dimitri. I couldn’t do this without you."

However, Dimitri still had one question left, "Why do you think the Goddess asked you to do this?"

It was a dumb question he thought. Adeline was almost confirmed to be the Saintess. He heard this from the Marquess. It was a good and bad thing, who knows what would happen when the Holy Temple finds out.

Adeline trusted Dimitri with all her heart so she laid it out in the open. "Well, maybe because she wanted to help me." She smiled and continued, "I want to make sure I have enough backing so that the Holy Temple can’t lay a finger on me."

And at this moment, it finally clicked for Dimitri. Why did Adeline speak so highly about the Mage Tower, why did she want him to go there?

She was... Desperate... After knowing his true wishes she didn’t push him, she simply found another backer.

Was this because of him? She put herself in such a dangerous position just to find a powerful ally.

Seeing him deep in thought Adeline didn’t disturb him, she waited a bit before calling out to him. "Dimitri?"

"Do you wish for me to go to the Mage Tower?" If she said yes, he would dedicate himself to it in a heartbeat. What she said is true... It was an important faction...

And if he was able to make a name for himself there and provide her support... No, if he went there and became stronger... He could protect her... Forget support, he could destroy that Holy Temple if they crossed a line.

His eyes narrowed. He almost made up his mind about it at this moment, but he wanted to hear her answer.

Adeline wondered why he asked that all of a sudden. She thought about the past, she did not think she mentioned it too many times, maybe she mentioned it once?

"Like I said Dimitri, I only thought going there would help you with your magic. But, if you go. I would miss you too much. I’m glad you want to stay."

That was... The answer he wanted. She wanted him to stay. A tiny blush crept up to his ears. Dimitri felt his heart flutter slightly. She wanted him here, by her side.

She wasn’t pushing him toward the Mage Tower as a pawn in a larger plan. He made up his mind. After they finish off the current task, he will be going to the Mage Tower.

If he could gain more power there... The Holy Temple will hardly be a threat. He closed his eyes for a second. He remembered the days he was on the streets... He heard of what kind of a place it was.

The Temple would ask for exorbitant amounts... But to make sure they still had Goodwill among the commoners, they would freely treat twenty selected people for free.

There was a waitlist... And people would kill the ones on the waitlist to move up. He hated that organisation... It was everything that was wrong with this world.

Knowing it was a place that produced people like Annora and Edward was also one of the reasons he held disdain for them.

He looked at Adeline who stared at him with hopeful eyes, he smiled back at her and said, "I am glad I decided to stay too."
