Chapter 79: Intelligence Report
Adeline wanted to sleep in. She knew that once she was in the Eastern Duchy, she had to wake up early in the morning. But there were birds chirping outside so loudly she had to wake up.
Kicking the blanket away, she sat up, stretching off her sleepiness, she spotted a note on her bedside table. It was from her father, confirming that he had already sent off a letter and received a reply from the Eastern Duchess.
Adeline’s mouth dropped open. Her father had acted so quickly! She had expected at least a week to prepare.
Why was her father in such a hurry to get rid of her? She frowned but brushed it off. This is what she needed anyway.
"What? You’re leaving?" Aaron asked in pure shock. This was particularly uncharacteristic of their father. He would never let Adeline go to some place far away for a month!
"Yep. I am going to learn etiquette from the Eastern Duchess herself."
"By yourself?" Aaron’s face was a mixture of confusion and worry.
He crossed his arms, leaning against the wall with a deep frown. "Father would never let you go that far without family. You’ll be gone for a whole month?"
Adeline nodded vigorously. She was going alone. She wasn’t too worried for some reason.
"I’ll be fine, Aaron. Besides, I’ll only be a teleportation circle away"
Despite her reassurance, Aaron still looked troubled. She would be going to the other side of the country. "We’ve never been that far from each other. What if something happens?" He muttered to himself.
When he talked to Alaric and Dimitri about this, Dimitri immediately spoke up, "I will go with her!"
The brothers turned to look at him at once. Alaric thought for a second and agreed. He personally witnessed how well he could wield his wind powers.
They could rest assured knowing that she had Dimitri by her side. The Marquess immediately signed off on this request too.
Once Dimitri was gone, Alaric finally spoke up. "Father, are you sure about sending Adeline away for that long?" Something about the whole situation felt unusual.
The Marquess sighed and put down the paperwork he was looking at. "These are troubling times Alaric." He took out a scroll from the drawer and tossed it onto the desk.
"It would be best if the children were away. Aaron will be living with one of his friends too."
Alaric frowned and stepped forward to take the letter.
Although the seal was torn, he could tell that it was an intelligence report.
Helping refugees was a good way to improve the territory... But it also triggered some groups that were dissatisfied with this move.
They have deeply placed prejudice against the refugees. They were dissatisfied with the idea that "their tax money" was being used to help outsiders and had begun stirring unrest among the locals, hoping to pressure the Marquess into abandoning his plans.
The Marquess knew that they would plan something huge. He wasn’t fazed by their act of provoking the locals to turn against him. They would definitely do something big to get his attention.
He could only plan to deal with these people only after knowing that his children were safe and sound. Sending them away from the territory for some time would be the correct thing to do according to him.
Adeline and Dimitri will be safe in the Eastern Duchy while Aaron will be staying with his friend Ivan for some time.
Alaric put the scroll away and looked at his father. He smiled, he was about to say that he was thankful for the trust placed in him.
He wasn’t sent off like his siblings. He felt honoured.
But the Marquess took it the wrong way. Seeing Alaric’s smile, he felt self-conscious. "What? It’s my glasses, isn’t it? Fine, I am taking it off." He raised his hands in defeat before removing his glasses.
Alaric just stood there in confusion and widened eyes. Just what was his father talking about?
Adeline watched the sunset from her window, casting a warm light across her room. Tonight was her last night at home for a while, and the thought made her feel uneasy.
This would be her first time travelling on her own, far from her family and everything she knew.
But it was necessary. She will protect her family at any cost. Once she gets the backing of the Eastern Duke, she won’t have to worry about her powers being exposed.
In fact, she wanted to expose her powers to the world. She prepared to change everything, including entirely eliminating the Holy Temple.
What can they do when their Holy Power isn’t an exclusive commodity anymore? She smiled to herself.
When she first came to this world she was afraid of changing anything. But things have changed, and circumstances have changed.
She had a lot more people she had to protect now.
She heard about how Dimitri offered to go with her. He was such a kind and considerate boy, she thought. A smile bloomed on her face unknowingly.
Having such a reliable person with her made her feel more at ease. The one she was about to take on was the Eastern Duke... He was a capable person, he was able to keep his affair a secret for so long.
The secret she wished to uncover will completely uproot his life and everything he gained throughout the years... And if she got too close, he would definitely retaliate.
It was a dangerous task, but it was something that she had to do.
The next morning, they set off. Her father picked her up and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Alaric and Aaron hugged her tight before letting her go.
She watched as the estate faded into the distance. Dimitri sat beside her in the carriage, glancing at her every now and then as if making sure she was safe.
She couldn’t help but smile at his seriousness; he looked as determined as a knight on his first mission.
The teleportation circle transported both them and the carriage and landed them in the outskirts of the Eastern Duchy. They weren’t too far from the estate, but it would take a few hours.
There was a significant shift in the landscape. She observed many statues... Painters sat and took in the scenery before putting their brush on the canvas.
The Eastern Duchy had many businesses, the Duchess absolutely loved art and gave her patronage to many.
When they arrived at the estate, it was even more impressive than she’d imagined. Beautiful gardens filled with wildflowers stretched before the gates.
And stone paths led to tall arches with intricate carvings. Statues of mythical creatures and historical figures lined the gardens.
Every part of the estate was meticulously designed, from the hedges sculpted into graceful shapes to the stone pathways leading through beds of delicate roses and lavender.
She could tell that this was entirely the Duchess’ design.
"Lady Adeline, welcome," a steward greeted them, bowing and offering his hand to help her from the carriage. Dimitri followed, looking around in awe.
If Adeline had to use modern words to describe this estate, she would use the words- aesthetically pleasing.
