Chapter 76: Another crisis
"Fine, you make a good point. But you underestimate me, child. The Duke is not only cheating on the Duchess... He has an illegitimate child."
Adeline’s eyes widened... He dared to do this... If the Duchess finds out, he is dead! Cheating is taken incredibly seriously among nobles.
Keeping bloodlines pure and making sure they have a noble image is a priority! Still, Adeline wasn’t sure that it would be enough for the Duchess to owe her.
"Let me finish Adeline! Ahem. The illegitimate child has been groomed to take over the Duchy. The Duke plans to butter up the Duchess and get her to adopt the child. He created a whole backstory too! The boy is the son of a poor noble, he knows how the Duchess gives importance to bloodlines... She wouldn’t let this child of ’noble blood’ become a commoner."
Yep... This is it. If she manages to stop this in time and expose him... The Duchess will owe her a LOT.
Adeline coughed a couple of times and told herself that she wasn’t a bad person to exploit someone’s problems. She just happens to need help too!
Even if she didn’t need to go against the Holy Temple, she would have exposed that cheating b*stard!
"Thank you. This is helpful. Now I need to find evidence for this." Adeline fell deep in thought.
"Don’t look at me. I already filled the daily quota of helping poor people. I’m gonna go take a nap now. Buh-bye."
Adeline rolled her eyes. She forgot how annoying the Goddess was... Again.
"Waaiiit! Do you at least know where this child is?!"
Adeline didn’t receive any answer from the Goddess. She stomped her feet in annoyance. What was she supposed to do now?!
What should she tell her father now? ’Hi, dad. I am going to catch a cheater on the other side of the Empire. Bye!’
Adeline let out a big sigh and shook her head.
She went out to see what Dimitri was up to, if she remembered right he should be practising his magic with the help of the Captain. She hoped he would improve quickly and go to the Mage Tower soon.
As much as she would hate to see him leave, it was his destiny to become the Arch Mage.
Once she reached the training grounds, she was surprised at the scene in front of her.
There he was, gripping a sword almost half his size, his small frame dwarfed by the practice blade. Every swing he took was filled with determination. He put his complete focus on the training and didn’t even notice when Adeline appeared.
The Captain stood nearby, observing him closely. His arms were crossed and his face stern but also filled with approval. It was clear that he was satisfied with Dimitri’s performance.
The Captain was a middle-aged man. He was capable and strong but he wasn’t oblivious to the signs of aging. He decided to dedicate his life to the House of Kendrick and Adeline...
He must also make sure there was someone in his place who would guard them just as much as he did. And he decided to make Dimitri into that person.
He noticed that Dimitri had very powerful skills, he didn’t imagine someone with wind abilities to cause that much destruction... If he were to practice the sword and combine it with his innate wind magic, he would surely be the strongest in the Empire!
Training someone like this motivated the Captain more than he’d like to admit. He was all over Dimitri, preparing training routines and gathering scrolls from which he could learn Wing magic.
"Good," the Captain said, nodding at Dimitri. "You’ve improved a lot. Your stance is steady, and your strikes are stronger."
Dimitri’s face lit up at the praise. He was finally getting better at this!
Adeline watched as his eyes shone with a mixture of pride and excitement. Seeing his expression made her feel... Weird.
He was just a child... Being a knight was probably just a dream that he would outgrow right? Adeline felt uncomfortable. The plot was changing... She had to keep up.
But looking at Dimitri, the deviation seemed too much. He was supposed to be the Arch Mage, but he kept talking about becoming a knight...
Adeline’s eyebrows furrowed.
Dimitri finally turned to see Adeline. She quickly changed her expression, she didn’t like how she was feeling. And she didn’t want anyone else to know.
Dimitri felt particularly proud of himself, he felt like he was finally being useful. What the Captain said didn’t sound so bad. He could become a knight and make the world a safer place for fellow refugees.
More importantly, he could stay with the Marquess... And be close to Adeline.
"Adeline! Look, I’m improving!" he called out, his voice filled with excitement. "The Captain says I’m getting better with the sword!"
Adeline smiled, it felt rather forceful. She was anxious. Maybe because she had been on the edge for a while. The mage tower is an important faction... And Dimitri doesn’t seem to be interested in it at all.
"You did well. I thought you were going to focus on your magic..." Her voice softened.
He didn’t expect this question, but he answered pretty quickly. "I don’t mean to brag but magic has been easy. It’s the sword I’m struggling with so I am putting in much more time into it. After all, to be a knight I have to be proficient in the art of the sword!"
Her heart tightened. A knight... This was... A big deviation.
There are too many things out of her control.
If Dimitri strayed too far from his path, then who knew how the future might unfold?
But she couldn’t bring herself to say any of that. He was just a child. How could she crush his dreams. She stared at him with a complicated expression on her face.
She knew that his role as the Arch Mage was important to the story. But she couldn’t remember what he did. Her memories had been jumbled and missing ever since she came to this world.
"You... Dimitri, what about the Mage Tower?"
