Chapter 74: Who Are You?
Chapter 74: Who Are You?
The clouds gathered ominously over the Capital, the air was thick with foreboding. Slowly but surely, the plague has started to spread.
Small clusters of citizens fell ill with high fevers and uncontrollable shivers. No matter what medicine they took, the fever just didn’t seem to reduce. There was fear in the hearts of the affected.
But this was just the beginning...
With smug satisfaction, Edward watched the commotion unfold from his chamber in the Holy Temple. Sacrifices are needed for him to get what he wants.
Panic will do them no good... He grinned, his lips curling into a chilling smile. What will Adeline do now? He thought.
Her helping nature was visible for him to see. Will she expose herself to help the ones that are affected or will she stay quiet?
He paced the room, thinking of her power. His fascination with Adeline was more than just curiosity... It was an obsession.
He wanted to prove to himself that he could mould and manipulate her destiny as he wished. Is she truly worthy of being the Saintess? He thought of the holy powers that dwelled within her. What would she do when it ran out?
Regardless of the choice Adeline made, he will be removing her soul from her perfect vessel.
Everything he did... He did for her... He leaned back as he remembered her voice.
He didn’t forget everything that had happened on that mountain. The sword... It was taken from him. He will not forget this insult... He will get back what was his.
For now, he needed to wait. It wasn’t time yet.
Meanwhile, on that very same mountain, Annora struggled for her life.
She had barely escaped Edward’s manipulation, making her way to a remote peak where she sought refuge. She was relieved to be far away from everything and everyone.
But that relief immediately left as soon as she was hit with the cold winds of the mountain. There was snow everywhere and the only thing she had on herself was a coat. She couldn’t bear it...
She looked for a place to take shelter. She felt like she was so close to death. The chill seemed to reach her bones.
Her body was weak and trembling. She couldn’t feel her fingers or anything for that matter. The only sense that was still working was her hearing. The cold winds howled as she made her way through the snow.
Dying in here felt better than living under the control of Edward.
She could hide behind the trunk of a huge tree for now to block off the wind, but as fate would have it, she was able to spot a cave in the distance.
She quickly ran towards it with all her might. She wanted to survive... She needed to survive!
Although the entrance was partially covered by snow, and she felt like her hands would freeze off... She made it into the cave.
Collapsing onto the stone floor, she leaned against the cold wall. Her breath was heavy and she felt dazed. She took a deep breath to calm herself. But that calm didn’t last long.
A low growl echoed through the cave startling her. Her heart raced as her eyes adjusted to the dim light.
She saw the source of the sound and her worst fears were confirmed. A pack of hungry wolves... She looked around and there were clear signs of someone... Or rather something living there.
But because of the cold and tiredness, she collapsed on the floor, not minding anything.
From the shadows, their outlines became clear... They were bloodthirsty, hungry wolves.
She wanted to run but she couldn’t feel her legs. Even if she could, where would she run?!
She scrambled back, her hand clutched at a jagged rock in a desperate attempt to defend herself.
The wolves lunged at her with all their might. She was barely able to dodge. With pure instinct, she aimed at the wolf closest to her and lightly scratched it.
She struggled to get up and run away. But somehow she managed, that was until one of them managed to bite her ankle.
She screamed in pain and fell to the ground, there was no chance of escape for her now.
In a moment of despair, she closed her eyes, waiting for the inevitable. This couldn’t be the end... She... She wanted to do so much.
The Goddess wished for her to live a happy life... That was why she was reborn... But why did Edward come back?! She hated everything and everyone, including the Goddess.
She planned to stay away from him and everyone but she was dragged into the mess yet again by Edward... And look where it got her...
What she wanted was revenge. Fury surged within her. She didn’t want to remain passive, she wanted to spill the blood of her enemies herself. She wanted to give up but her resentment wouldn’t allow it.
Even as the wolves surrounded her, it didn’t diminish her hatred one bit.
A gust of strong wind blew in her direction forcing her to close her eyes. Not too long after that, she heard a thud and howls. Her eyes fluttered open to see the wolves lying dead on the ground.
She saw a figure standing at the mouth of the cave, cloaked in black with a hood pulled low over his face.
Just who was this person?
The stranger raised his hand, murmuring words in a language she didn’t understand. A dark fog emerged from him and turned into hands. They gripped the wolf corpses. She couldn’t tell what was happening.
One moment they were floating in the air, the next there was nothing. It just vanished.
Once the wolves were gone, the man lowered his hand, turning his hooded face toward her. Annora sat frozen, her gaze fixed on him, has she been saved or simply traded one threat for another.
"Who... Who are you?" she managed to stammer, her voice faint.
"This is not right..." He murmured. His gaze intensified leaving Annora shocked.
