Chapter 70: Mysterious Man

Chapter 70: Mysterious Man

Annora considered the opportunity rare. They were in an isolated area, and Edward was distracted. This would be the perfect time to make a run for it.

Forbidden magic of this level was bound to attract fellow practitioners. And that was exactly what happened.

Numerous individuals covered in black hooded capes showed up to confront Edward.

But before they could reach him, his plans went through. The river had been successfully contaminated with forbidden magic. Anyone who came in contact with it will be infected with the plague.

"Stop!" From the crowd that had gathered, one individual stepped forward. It was clear that he too was someone who wielded a great amount of magic. Just as, if not more powerful than Edward.

Black mist emanated from him, like hands they had reached for Edward. They caught him and held him down. He struggled, unable to move.

Edward fell face-first into the cold, wet snow. His eyes were red with humiliation. Just who dared to do this to him? Though his powers were weak, his will was not.

He fought back using magic of his own. He was able to loosen the grip of those ’hands’ that gripped him and attacked the man with daggers formed out of forbidden magic.

They were shaped like diamonds with sharp edges, tens of them were aimed at him, hoping it would cut him down.

But with a wave, the mist hands caught all of them and absorbed the magic in it.

Edward planned to summon these practitioners again, but nothing was going as planned. The Holy sword of Rolfe was linked to her...

He needed them to find her traces using the sword as his connection was cut off. But the Holy Sword of Rolfe had fallen off of him and onto the ground.

Those ’hands’ immediately seized that sword and in a second it vanished into thin air.

"Give it back to me..." Edward was prepared to attack again. His white hair was sullied by the dirt. He no longer looked the holy, pure boy everyone thought him to be.

His true personality had come out.

"That sword is not yours." The man immediately vanished. He turned into black smoke and once it cleared, he wasn’t there. The crowd took this as his order to disperse, so they did. Leaving Edward injured, tired, and alone in the cold.

He didn’t care about Annora at this point. He quickly tried to find the traces of the man who disappeared with the Holy Sword. He needed to get that sword back at any cost.

Even if Annora died on that mountain, he wouldn’t care.

The Captain had braved countless battles and faced enemies more terrifying than most could imagine, but none of it compared to the terror that gripped him as he approached the border.

He could smell the blood from afar. As they drew closer and closer the sounds of swords clashing and monsters howls increased.

He dismounted swiftly, his eyes scanning the battlefield, seeking out the familiar faces of his comrades, the men and women he had fought beside for years. But what caught his attention immediately was a figure he knew all too well... His sister.

She was in the thick of the fight, her spear a blur as she drove it into the chest of a monstrous beast. Blood stained her armour, and there was a ferocity in her movements that spoke of desperation.

She was injured!

His stomach twisted in panic, but he forced himself to stay calm.

His sister was strong, a seasoned warrior in her own right, but the sluggish way she moved... She was clearly injured!

He sprinted toward her, sword drawn, cutting down a creature that lunged at him. His only thought was to get to her side, to protect her.

"Stop!" he called out as he reached her, deflecting an attack with a swift strike. "You’re hurt, fall back!"

She didn’t even glance at him, her focus entirely on the battle. "I’m fine!" she snapped, her voice still shaky. "If we don’t deal with this now, they will break through the line!"

"You’re not fine!" he shouted back, parrying another monster’s claws. "You need to stop before-"

Before he could finish his sentence, another beast lunged at her from the side. She was too slow to react. The claws pierced through her armour and scratched deep into her back.

She crumpled to the ground with a cry of pain.

He dropped to his knees beside his sister, his heart racing! He didn’t have time to check on her wounds, the blood was pouring out.

"Stay with me," he whispered, his hands trembling as he pressed down on the wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

The monsters’ attacks have not seized. He needed to act fast. The reinforcement slowly started securing the border.

Her eyes met his, and for a moment, he saw fear in them. She had always been the strong one, the one who faced danger head-on without hesitation... But now...

The Captain’s mind raced. There were no healers. The Holy Temple had pulled their support, leaving them all to fend for themselves.

All he knew was that his sister was dying, and there was nothing he could do to save her.

But there was one hope. One slim, desperate hope.

He gathered her up in his arms, lifting her as gently as he could. She groaned in pain, her body limp against his chest.

He had to get her back to the manor. Adeline. She was the only one who could help now.

He had no time to reach the nearest town with the teleportation circle. His sister was in grave danger. As a last resort, he had to use the teleportation crystal.

It was imbued with the magic of teleportation, the problem was that it wasn’t too accurate and it was very costly. If the user doesn’t strongly remember the place, there were high chances they would get teleported to some place random.

And those places weren’t always safe.

He had no choice, he needed to take the chance!
