Chapter 64: Revealed
Chapter 64: Revealed
As soon as dawn broke, Adeline was ready to go. She had barely slept, the upcoming journey to the Northern Duchy was all that she could think of.
The fact that her father had agreed to come with her gave her a renewed sense of determination.
The teleportation circles were powerful but rare, only places with large populations or a heavy flow of commerce had them. Which meant that the Northern Duchy definitely had them.
It made travelling much easier, although there were some physical effects like nausea when using the teleportation circle, it was much better than waiting for days on end to reach the destination.
Besides her father, she was accompanied by four elite guards, an imposing group whose sole purpose was protection. When they made use of the circle, her father and the guards felt slightly nauseated but it was something they were used to.
Adeline on the other hand felt absolutely fine. She experienced none of the side effects which surprised the Marquess. She was full of energy and kept running off.
The temperature difference immediately hit Adeline, the temperature in the Northern Duchy was much warmer. It made sense why agriculture would have so much prominence.
As they travelled to the estate, Adeline looked around and saw vast fields, everything was lush and green and... Alive.
While the estate’s walls stood tall, looming over them, it not welcoming at all.
The estate itself lacked any light, figuratively. Adeline looked around, there was only gloom all around. This was such a contrast when compared to the vibrant scene outside.
The emblem they carried was enough to ensure swift entry. The Northern Duke’s guards, though vigilant, knew the importance of the Marquess’s visit and quickly allowed them in.
Upon entering, it became clear that the Duke himself was in no condition to receive anyone. He had not left his wife’s chambers since the previous day. He shut himself in since Edward’s departure.
Like father, like son. Benedict, too, had locked himself away. His mother’s declining condition and his father’s cruel behaviour were too much to bear. To cope with all that was happening, he could only isolate himself.
But when he heard that the Western Marquess had come, he knew it meant Adeline had arrived as well. He was the representative of the house when his father was not present.
The servants couldn’t urge the Duke to come out, so they had to inform Benedict of the arrival of the guests. He had to play the role of a good host.
The sound of footsteps echoed in the quiet halls as Benedict finally came out of his room. He looked dishevelled, there wasn’t a peaceful moment since she met the guy.
Adeline just hoped that once she saves his mother, he could become the bright, happy boy he once was.
When he saw Adeline standing beside her father, a flicker of hope sparked in his eyes.
"Adeline," he greeted, his voice was rough with exhaustion. He glanced between her and her father. He was happy to see her, but this wasn’t the best time.
Everything was such a mess. He wanted to talk, he had a lot of things to say but nothing could come out of him.
Adeline didn’t waste time. She stepped forward, "Benedict, I need to see your mother."
Benedict hesitated. He trusted Adeline, more than anyone else in his life, but this... this request was...
His throat tightened. "I- I don’t think that would be possible." His head hung in despair.
Adeline extended her hand, she held up her palm so that he could see what was about to happen. A soft white glow enveloped it.
Holy power... This was Benedict’s first encounter with it. He heard rumours about it but never experienced it himself. The light radiated gently from her palm.
It sparkled against his tear-stricken face. Benedict’s eyes widened in shock.
"Adeline... Is this... Holy Power?" His voice was a bit too loud but thankfully there was no one around to hear it.
"It is... I believe I can help her," Adeline replied firmly.
Benedict’s voice cracked. "But the Holy Temple... They sent someone. He tried, but she didn’t get better. What if..." His words trailed off. What if this doesn’t work either? One more disappointment might just break him.
Adeline stepped closer, her expression softening. "Trust me, Benedict. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could make a difference."
His eyes were wavering. This was a huge leap of faith on his end. After a few moments, he slowly nodded. He decided to take her to his mother.
But before that he looked a the Marquess who stood tall and imposing, upon meeting Benedict’s gaze, his eyes immediately softened.
"I think... You have to come with us, my Lord."
He needed the Marquess’ authority to make his father hear them out. By himself, he would be able to accomplish nothing. The distance between the father and son was far too great.
The path to the Duchess’s chambers was heavy with anticipation. When they arrived, the door was locked, as expected.
Benedict knocked softly, but there was no response from his father inside. He worriedly turned to look at the Marquess hoping he had an idea.
With a flick of his wrist, a small burst of fire magic emanated from his hand, it had practically melted the doorknob off... It worked though- the door was unlocked.
The heavy wooden door creaked open, revealing the dimly lit chamber where the Duchess lay. The Duke was seated next to the bed, his head resting near her legs.
Adeline and Benedict exchanged a glance before stepping inside.
As Adeline, her father, and Benedict step into the Duchess’s chamber, they are met by a cold, heavy silence.
The Duke has been trained in combat, the moment the trio stepped into the room he awoke.
"I didn’t allow you to come in..."
The Duke didn’t want to hurt them but he also didn’t want them here. He waved his hand and powers shot out. He planned on blocking them.
"Not on my watch."
The last thing Adeline remembered was heat and redness.
