Chapter 59: Exposed?

Adeline ran up to him, she didn’t care about her image. She wanted to hug her dad!

Her father bent down to pick her up. He looked at the harmonious image in front of him. This was what he wanted to protect, and he will at any cost.

He was about to respond when another figure caught his eye. Dimitri, the quiet boy they had taken in. Dimitri stood a bit to the side, slightly awkward but offering a respectful nod.

He admitted he was wary of this boy at first but slowly he grew closer to the family. It also caused him guilt, no one should be living like this. He couldn’t let something like this continue in his territory.

When he chose to rehabilitate the refugees, he did it for Dimitri, he did it for Adeline, and he also did it for himself.

Once everything was settled, he found himself back in his study, staring out the window.

The swing moved gently against the breeze...

His daughter could be the Saintess... Her powers were not dwindling, they grew only stronger. The banquet... Didn’t people from the Holy Temple attend?! Does that mean... Is she discovered?

He collapsed into his chair, brows filled with worry.

He hadn’t heard anything from anyone yet, but it had only been a day. He would have to wait for them to make their move.

The Marquess fell deep in thought. The Emperor would get rid of anyone who could threaten his position, the Holy Temple had always been a double-edged sword. He knew his ’dear’ friend would want to deal with them.

He always believed in elimination before things became a problem. To get the Emperor to deal with the Holy Temple, he had to promise him enough healing powers so that their army wouldn’t have to depend on the Temple.

The problem is, he would have to ’pimp’ out his daughter. She was only one person, she couldn’t cover the entire border.

Or have enough proof that the Holy Temple has overstepped and instigate the Emperor to completely wipe them out. They were healers... Not fighters. Soldiers from the Imperial Army are stationed there for protection. One command from the Emperor and...

At one point he considered using forbidden magic to help Adeline hide her powers. If nothing works out then he might have to do it...

"We need reinforcements!"

The situation on the Western border grew tense, the monster attacks kept increasing. The size of the monsters have drastically increased too, like they have undergone a change!

"Send word to the Captain immediately!"

A mage with wind magic immediately set off, wind magicians were known for their speed. However, it didn’t matter how fast he was, he had to travel a whole night to get to a bustling city where he could use the teleportation circle. He prayed he would make it back in time.

"Why are you so careless?!" Adeline was extremely furious! Dimitri was not skilled in the art of the sword, he was a talented mage though. She didn’t know why Aaron went so hard on him!

His hands were covered in burns and blisters, and Aaron still hadn’t gotten the hang of his fire powers yet.

"I’m so sorry, Linny!" He sincerely apologised, he didn’t want to hurt Dimitri. He just wanted to bring him to his full potential.

"Don’t apologise to me, apologise to him!"

Adeline pointed at Dimitri. His head hung low, in shame or maybe sadness. But it wasn’t because of Aaron. He was grateful that Aaron decided to take time out of his busy schedule and help him improve.

But what was the point? His dreams of becoming a knight were being squashed. He couldn’t wield a sword, he couldn’t become strong, he couldn’t protect Adeline.

Adeline looked around and saw that nobody was around, so she decided to use her healing powers on him. His hands were too bloodied and she couldn’t take it!

Unfortunately, she was wrong. The Captain of the Knights had been keeping a close eye on Aaron. He was his only disciple, he had to watch him. He also knew how bad Dimitri was and didn’t want Aaron to overdo it.

Seeing the kids argue, he shook his head and watched. He was filled with nostalgia, it reminded him of his sister. But what happened next was unexpected.

His lady’s hands produced a white glow that healed Dimitri’s hands completely.

He couldn’t believe his eyes. She had... Holy Powers? Did the Marquess know of this?!

As much as he wanted to go up and ask her, he didn’t want to scare the children. He looked around to make sure no one was around to witness this. Since he was a veteran swordsman, he was more accurate.

The one he had to talk to was the Marquess, not Adeline.

The air in the Marquess’ study was heavy, the dark wood of the shelves and the dim flicker of the oil lamps casting long shadows across the room. The Captain of the Knights stood before him with a troubled expression.

He had just finished relaying what he had seen, Adeline had healed Dimitri with the unmistakable holy power.

The Marquess’ expression was tensed, his jaw clenched. He was not angry at the Captain, he trusted the man. But the implications of what he had just heard gnawed at his insides.

"Are you certain?" he asked, though he already knew the answer.

The Captain nodded solemnly. "I saw it with my own eyes, my Lord. She healed him as if it were second nature. The holy power was undeniable."

He doubted that the Marquess knew that his daughter had such powers. He would be proven wrong soon enough.

"Who else was there?" His voice was sharper than he intended, the stress of the situation pressing down on him.

"A few trainee knights but they were too far to see anything. My Lord..." He wanted to ask what his plan was.

The Marquess needed to talk to Adeline... It was a close call...
