Chapter 41: Escapee

"Miss! You’re back!"

Dimitri came running to the carriage and opened the door.

"Dimitri, you don’t have to do this," Alaric said. He quickly grew fond of the young boy. His enthusiasm was infectious, the brothers started training even harder since Dimitri started living there.

By the time Dimitri woke up, Alaric and Adeline were gone. Not only them but the Marquess was gone too. At least he knew the Marquess was leaving, seeing the two of them missing he panicked. He was too afraid of something happening to the people close to him, he was afraid of being left alone again. Thankfully, Aaron told him that they went out and he was able to calm down.

He skipped training and waited for them to arrive, he kept staring out the window hoping it was them. He couldn’t let them know though, knowing how kind they were, they would try not to go out so that he wouldn’t worry. He could deal with this himself.

Before he could say anything his stomach growled loudly. He even forgot to eat while waiting for them. His face quickly turned red, he hoped they wouldn’t tease him about it.

"Come, let’s go eat something!" Adeline hooked her arm around his and skipped towards the manor. Adeline was hungry herself, she barely ate anything at the palace.

"Where did you go?" In between bites, he asked. Aaron only told him that they went out. He wanted to have a conversation since there was silence.

There was a lot of nervousness built up in him. He was worried that he was being too needy, or that they got sick of him. It still feels like a dream, one day he was on the streets, and the next he was able to have a full stomach and a comfortable bed. The cherry on top would be the kind people he was surrounded by. After the Marquess gave his orders, no one dared to mistreat Dimitri. They treated him like any other person, he never faced the disdain he experienced for being a refugee.

Adeline didn’t think much of his question, but later she would it was one of the reasons why the plot changed drastically.

"We went to the palace."

Seeing his widened clueless eyes she had to suppress her laughter, it was just so cute.

"It’s where the Emperor lives." She further clarified.

"You met the Emperor?"

Adeline shook her head and casually remarked, "No, I met the Crown Prince. He is about your age actually."

"He is very cunning for his age. I don’t understand why you would agree to meet him again, Linny. He is dangerous."

Dimitri’s ears perked up upon hearing the word dangerous. He trusted Alaric with his whole heart, if he said the Crown Prince was dangerous, it meant that he was dangerous.

"Brother, calm down. I already told you that I would never agree to get engaged to him. So, what are you worried about? Trust your sister sometimes." She pouted in dissatisfaction.

How could he trust her? He agreed with Aaron, their little sister was a mischievous gremlin. They knew they would spend the rest of their lives trying to keep her out of trouble. He shook his head and smiled.

Dimitri on the other hand was panicking. Was Adeline going to be taken away from them? He knew the might of the Royal Family of Lunaria. He personally witnessed the extent of their power when he was on the streets. If the Emperor ordered for them to get engaged, how could the Marquess refuse? No one can refuse an Imperial order.

Day by day Dimitri’s desire to become a knight to protect Adeline became stronger, this might have just cemented the idea. He needed to be powerful to protect the people close to him. He was going to make good use of the opportunity he was given.

Adeline leaned closer to him and poked his cheek with her index finger.

"What are you thinking about? Eat."

"I wonder what father will think of all this," Alaric muttered.

*Achoo*

"You probably are not used to the cold environment."

He lied to his children, he was not on a business trip. Where he was going to was far more dangerous and he couldn’t let them worry.

He went to an isolated region under the Southern Duchy. It was pretty much forgotten, there was no means of sustenance, a useless piece of land. One would think that no one in their right mind would live there, and they would be correct. Only one person lived there and they pretty much lost their sanity, she was the only one who escaped the Holy Temple successfully and has been in hiding since her escape.

He had been investigating people who left the temple to find out a solution for his daughter. Although it was a known fact that those born with holy powers would lose them eventually without the help of the Temple, her powers only grew stronger. She thought she could hide the extent of her powers from him but he was aware of everything that happened in his house.

He didn’t mind this escapee-priestess eccentric behaviour, even if he did, he would have to suck it up for his daughter. And thus began his life as a hermit. He had to spend time with her before she answered any of his questions. Every morning he would have to go fishing with her. Covered in a big cloak he had to walk through snow that was two feet high just to get some food. he couldn’t even use his fire powers because that would trigger her, he couldn’t risk doing that to someone already on edge.

As they sat on a fairly clean rock to fish, he couldn’t help but make conversation. It has been days since he had proper food, warmth or any interaction. He was the one losing it now.

"So, you like fish?"

That was a stupid question, it was the only type of food available.

She muttered something under her breath that he couldn’t quite hear, and he gave up on asking again.
