Chapter 36: Sick

"Linny, let’s leave, there is still time to turn back!"

Alaric wouldn’t stop saying this during the entire carriage ride. Adeline understood his concerns but she had to do this. This wasn’t about firmly refusing the Crown Prince and drawing a boundary anymore. She had to help Benedict.

As long as the male leads don’t become... People with crazy personalities, she wouldn’t have to worry about her and her family’s safety anymore.

"It’s something I have to do... I promise I won’t make any trouble."

Alaric sighed deeply. "It’s not you that I’m worried about Linny..."

"LOL, you definitely should." The Goddess popped in again.

’Shut up!’ Adeline couldn’t help but internally yell.

"I’m worried about the Empress. Father told me about their schemes, and as your brother, I have to protect you."

Adeline was so touched by her words, she didn’t miss her previous life one bit. What she had now was far more precious.

"See. Me pulling you into my story was actually for the best."

Aaaand the mood was ruined. Adeline shook her head. Why was this Goddess here? She was going to the palace to finish the task she was given. She wasn’t a child that needed supervision... Wait-

’Just don’t pop out of nowhere when I’m talking to Cassian, okay?’

’I mean, I’ll try. There’s not much entertainment up here. I like watching your life as if it were a sitcom. Family drama, romance, action. It has it all.’

Every time she talks to this Goddess, Adeline is left speechless. ’Family Drama’ what was that supposed to mean?

’Is that why you wrote traumatic backstories for all the male leads? You want drama?’

"Hey don’t blame me! I was a teenager! I just followed the cliches, it gets the most views y’know?"

There was some truth to that. Adeline agreed with her. That was the reason why she picked up this story in the first place and loved it as a teenager. There was no point getting mad at the Goddess. What’s done is done. She could only work towards changing the future.

The Imperial summon was enough to bring Adeline to the palace, it would be enough to get the attention of the Northern Duke.

"What do you mean Cassian is still resting? I set the date today for the meeting. Go wake him up, no excuses."

The Empress got angry at the nanny who attempted to reason with her. Cassian hadn’t been feeling good since he got whipped. It didn’t fully heal before he committed a mistake and had to be whipped as punishment again. The wounds got infected and took a toll on his health.

Cassian had no hope, he didn’t think his mother would change. Whatever she does is for his future... After telling himself that he started getting dressed. He didn’t know why his nanny thought she could fix the situation.

"She’s so stupid. This is all for my own good." His lifeless eyes told another story. He didn’t mean what he said.

At least he got to meet her again...

"Alaric go!"

"How could I leave you alone Adeline?"

"I will be fine. Trust me!"

She was able to see his complete lack of faith displayed on his face. She coughed awkwardly and reiterated her point. "The Empress won’t allow it anyway. So, it would be best to just leave now."

"What do I do after I leave you here?" There was literally nothing there for him to do.

"Why are you asking me? I am five!"

That was a good point.

Alaric decided to take a peak at the training grounds for the Imperial Army. He could learn a lot from them. Each Duchy had their own knights and their own techniques. He knew only the Kendrick way of fighting, he would love to know how the Imperial knights fought.

Although this was technically a ’playdate’ there was no playing involved. Only pain and awkwardness. The Empress wanted to oversee it, which was a nice way of saying she wanted to watch Cassian’s moves like a hawk. But that wasn’t going to happen. Seeing how Adeline was averse to meeting her, she had to control herself from being there. She trusted Cassian learnt his lesson and will obey her even without her being there.

She was guided to a room filled with snacks, most of them were her favourite which made her suspect there was a spy in her home. Making a mental note of this she waited. She only sipped the tea in front of her, she wasn’t in the mood to eat the pastries in front of her after that scary revelation.

She didn’t have to wait too long, Cassian entered the room within a few minutes. There was something different about him, she couldn’t put her finger on it. He wasn’t as enthusiastic as before. He didn’t even look at her. He plopped onto the sofa across from her and sighed.

His face was pale and he didn’t look too good.

’Is he sick?’
