Chapter 257: Embaressing

Adeline sat in her room, staring at the burgundy dress she had just bought, her fingers absentmindedly running over the fabric. She still couldn’t believe it. Out of all things, she was going to be the flower girl.

She groaned, burying her face in her hands.

How did this even happen?

It had started so simply—Isabelle had chosen Victoria as her maid of honour. That was natural, expected. Victoria was her closest friend, her sister, and it made perfect sense. Isabelle had then turned to Adeline and asked if she wanted to be a bridesmaid.

Adeline, however, had declined.

It wasn’t because she didn’t want to support Isabelle—of course, she did. But she wanted to sit back and watch the wedding unfold. She wanted to see it from the audience, to witness everything clearly, to imprint the memory in her mind.

It was something she never wanted to forget.

She thought that was the end of it.

But then Aaron, her foolish, ridiculous, troublemaking brother, had to open his mouth.

"If she doesn’t want to be a bridesmaid, why not make her the flower girl? She’s the youngest here anyway."

Adeline had turned to him with the most deadpan expression imaginable, silently questioning his intelligence. Did he have any idea what he was suggesting? She, Adeline, walking down the aisle, tossing flower petals like a little child?

She thought Isabelle would laugh it off.

But she hadn’t.

Instead, she had loved the idea.

Her eyes had practically sparkled with excitement, and before Adeline could even react, Isabelle had agreed with Aaron.

"Victoria’s already my maid of honour, and if you were just a bridesmaid, it would not sit right with me! But as our flower girl? That would be perfect!"

Perfect?

Perfectly humiliating, maybe.

Before Adeline could protest, Isabelle had already started talking about how adorable it would be, how she could wear whatever dress she wanted, and how she would make the wedding even more memorable that way.

Then, before she knew it, the decision had been made.

And that was how Adeline had entered her slump.

For a full week, she had barely left her room. Avoidance was key. If she stayed hidden long enough, maybe they’d forget about it. Maybe she wouldn’t have to do it. Maybe she could pretend it never happened.

But life was never that kind to her.

Now, after finally dragging herself out of her slump and going dress shopping, reality slapped her in the face.

She had agreed.

She was actually going to do this.

At least she got to wear a pretty dress.

She had to walk down the aisle, dressed beautifully, with all eyes on her, throwing flower petals like some delicate little girl.

She wanted to dig a hole and crawl into it.

As she continued to sit on her bed, sulking, the door suddenly swung open.

Layla stepped inside, arms crossed, her expression amused.

"You look miserable," she observed, walking over to the bed and flopping down beside her.

Adeline groaned again, rolling over so that her face was buried in the pillow.

Layla poked her in the back. "You’re being dramatic."

Adeline lifted her head just enough to glare at her. "Wouldn’t you be? I have to be a flower girl. A flower girl, Layla."

Layla burst into laughter.

Adeline scowled. "This isn’t funny!"

Layla stopped laughing immediately and tried her best to be supportive. "I think you will do well. You’re going to look so beautiful!" But then she burst into laughter again.

Adeline smacked her with the pillow.

Layla only laughed harder.

Adeline groaned again, rolling onto her back and staring at the ceiling. "I should have just agreed to be a bridesmaid."

"Too late now," Layla teased, smirking.

Adeline hated that she was right.

She sat up, arms crossed, and sighed dramatically. "At least Isabelle said I could wear any dress I wanted."

"I gotta say, that dress looks absolutely beautiful on you. Too bad some people are not lucky enough to witness it," Layla said, her tone slightly more serious now. She sat down next to Adeline, her expression shifting into something softer.

Adeline knew exactly who she was referring to.

She clenched her hands on the fabric of her dress.

So what?

They didn’t deserve it. Their minds were being controlled, and it was not really their fault, but Adeline was still mad. She had to face the consequences and deal with their behaviour, so she was allowed to be mad.

But even with that bitterness lingering, she couldn’t deny one thing—this dress was beautiful, wasn’t it? She felt a little better just looking at it.

Layla must have noticed, because she smiled. "See? You’re already feeling better."

Adeline shook her head, a small smile tugging at her lips. As much as she hated the situation, she had to admit—she wasn’t truly upset. More than anything, she was just embarrassed.

It was silly.

And yet, somehow, she could already picture Aaron smirking in the audience, Isabelle beaming with pride, and Layla laughing at her misery.

She sighed again, but this time, it wasn’t as dramatic. "I guess I’ll just go with this pretty dress. It’s beautiful, and I already love it."

Layla gave her a thumbs-up. "Good choice. If you’re going to be a flower girl, at least be a stunning one."

Adeline rolled her eyes, but she was smiling now.

Maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be so bad.

Maybe, instead of being embarrassing, it could be fun.

Layla grinned. "And hey, think of it this way, you get to make a grand entrance. All eyes on you first."

Adeline gave her an unimpressed look. "That’s not helping. Are you trying to ruin my day?"

Layla shrugged, still grinning. "I’m just saying."

Adeline snorted.

Layla stood up and stretched. "Well, now that I’ve successfully cheered you up, I expect full credit in your wedding speech."

"I’m not giving a speech," Adeline deadpanned.

"You will when Isabelle forces you to."

Adeline blinked for a second before the realisation hit her. "You’re right. Oh... Crap."

"You’ll be fine!" Layla assured her again.

And if anyone dared to laugh at her, well—

She would make sure to step on their feet when she walked past them.
