Chapter 255: New Dress New Her

"Ughhhhh," Adeline whined, burying herself deeper into the soft covers of her bed.

The blankets were warm, the pillows were perfectly fluffed, and the world outside was too much of a headache to deal with. She was comfortable here. She didn’t want to move.

"You can’t keep staying in bed! Today is your brother’s wedding!" The Goddess’ voice rang through the room, sharp with frustration.

Adeline groaned again in protest.

This girl... The Goddess sighed helplessly, shaking her head. What should she do with this one?

Adeline, with all her grand plans of investigating, had done nothing but laze around in bed for an entire week. After all that talk about gathering information, after all her determination to find leads, she had ended up doing absolutely nothing.

At first, she had tried. She really had.

She searched for traces of forbidden magic, following the small leads she had. But the trail ran cold too quickly. The ones she was tracking—the ones responsible—had covered their tracks too well. Every hideout they found had already been abandoned.

And without any new information, without any real direction to go in, Adeline gave up.

Now, she spent all her time in bed.

Sleeping.

Eating.

Doing absolutely nothing.

The Goddess had tried to be patient. She understood the frustration of hitting a dead end. She understood the exhaustion that came with constantly thinking and planning. But this? This was getting ridiculous.

"Adeline," the Goddess sighed, rubbing her temples. "You have to get up. You can’t just waste away like this."

Adeline only pulled the blankets over her head.

"But I want to waste away," she muttered from beneath the covers.

The Goddess twitched.

"No, you don’t," she said firmly. "You’re just sulking."

Adeline peeked out just enough to glare at her. "Am not."

"Are too."

Adeline huffed and turned her face away.

The Goddess folded her arms. "Your brother’s wedding is today. Do you really want to miss it?"

At that, Adeline actually paused.

She had almost forgotten.

Alaric’s wedding.

She sighed and rolled onto her back, staring at the ceiling. It wasn’t that she didn’t care. She did. But... she was tired.

She wasn’t just physically tired. She was mentally drained.

She had been thinking about her situation non-stop, trying to find a way out. The more she thought about it, the more she realized how trapped she was.

If she solved this problem on her own, without Edward’s help, then she wouldn’t need to become a Saintess. That was the loophole she had been searching for.

But of course, nothing was ever that easy.

The Goddess had tried everything. They had searched through every lead they had, and it all amounted to nothing. No matter what, she still needed Edward.

And that reality was exhausting.

So instead of dealing with it, she chose to do nothing at all.

She spent an entire week in bed, shutting out the world.

Alaric had tried to get her out. He was worried, always checking on her.

Isabelle, too. She had gently encouraged Adeline to join in on the household duties, hoping it would give her something to focus on.

But Adeline had refused.

All she wanted was to lay face down on her soft, comfy bed and pretend nothing else existed.

As long as she was asleep, she didn’t have to worry.

"Adeline." The Goddess’ voice softened slightly. "I know you’re frustrated. I know you feel stuck. But this isn’t the answer."

Adeline sighed again. "I just... don’t see the point."

"The point is that life moves on," the Goddess said firmly. "Whether you want it to or not. You can’t just stop living because things didn’t go your way."

Adeline didn’t answer.

The Goddess sighed, rubbing her temples again.

She had to try a different approach.

"You know," she said casually, "Layla has been visiting a lot. She’s been spending time with Aaron."

Adeline blinked. "...So?" What difference does that make? Layla... Oh, dear Layla... She tried to get her out of bed once or twice then she too gave up.

Aaron convinced her that Adeline had to work through it by herself, she needed to figure things out and all they could do was support her. Layla didn’t stop visiting... She just spent more time with Aaron.

Her rationale was... Aaron was going off to the border right after the wedding, she had to make most of little time she had... Getting to know her new friend... That was it!

The Goddess smirked slightly. "So? Doesn’t that make you curious?"

Adeline frowned, finally sitting up. "Why would it?"

"Oh, I don’t know," the Goddess said, tilting her head. "Maybe because your brother and Layla seem to be getting along very well."

Adeline blinked. "They’ve always gotten along."

The Goddess let out a dramatic sigh. "You’re really dense, aren’t you?"

Adeline scowled. "I am not!"

"You are," the Goddess said flatly.

Adeline huffed, crossing her arms.

"I don’t get what you’re trying to say," she grumbled.

The Goddess just chuckled. "Never mind. You’ll figure it out eventually."

Adeline narrowed her eyes. She hated when the Goddess spoke in riddles.

Still, the distraction had worked. For the first time in days, she was actually engaging in conversation.

The Goddess decided to push a little further.

"If you don’t get out of bed soon," she said, "I’m going to... I’m going to... Take back your powers!" The Goddess attempted to get this lazy strawberry out of bed but she refused to budge!

"Hah. Right, as if. You are as powerless as me!" Adeline let out a cruel laugh.

"You!" The Goddess tried scolding her but she held back. It was true, she did not have many powers, and she was barely a goddess. Still! That was such a cheap shot.

"If you miss Alaric’s wedding you are going to regret it. Isabelle has been so kind to you and Alaric has always made sure to be there for all your important events, he always supported you, are you really going to do this to him?!"

The Goddess tried as a hail mary attempt to get her to move... She cannot go on like this. Adeline had to pull herself together. She tried everything she could, she pursued leads, she investigated, sometimes that was all you can do!

So she should not feel so bad about it. Yes, it was unfortunate that she had to make a deal with Edward but what could she do?

She was the author was she not? The self-proclaimed Goddess? But there was not much she could do... She was powerless... She could only talk to Adeline... No one else could hear her voice.

It felt lonely at times, but she did not mind. She had Adeline... Always. She wished there was more she could do for her, but she could not... The Goddess too wanted to fall face first on a comfy bed and do nothing.

Adeline groaned loudly, falling back onto her pillows.

"Fine!" she whined. "I’ll get up!"

The Goddess clapped her hands together. "Finally!"

Adeline sat up reluctantly, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "But I’m only going because of Alaric’s wedding," she muttered.

"Of course, of course," the Goddess said, clearly amused.

Adeline threw her a glare before forcing herself to her feet. Her legs felt stiff from not moving much for the past week, and she stretched with a groan.

"See? Moving isn’t so bad," the Goddess teased.

Adeline ignored her and walked toward her wardrobe. "What am I even supposed to wear?" She muttered. She looked at the rows of dresses and was still in confusion.

"A dress, obviously," the Goddess said.

Adeline rolled her eyes. "Obviously."

The wedding ceremony was in the evening, which meant she had plenty of time to find a dress. If she needed something new, she could go buy one. It had been a whole week since she had gone outside, a whole week since she had seen the sun.

She felt like a damn vampire.

Adeline stretched her arms, feeling her muscles protest after being lazy for so long. Staying in bed had been nice, but she supposed fresh air wouldn’t kill her.

The thought of getting a new dress gave her a small reason to leave her room. If she was going to attend a wedding, she might as well look good.

Meanwhile, Isabelle was busy getting ready for the ceremony. She had been staying at their house instead of at the Griffin residence, but neither she nor Alaric cared much about tradition.

The wedding had already been delayed once for Adeline and Victoria’s sake, and now that everything was settled, Isabelle and Alaric were eager to finally get married. Adeline could understand why. They had been waiting for this day for a long time.

Isabelle had been the one to plan most of the wedding herself, which suited her just fine. She liked having control over the details. From the decorations to the cake to the guest list—everything was exactly how she wanted it. It made things more personal, and Adeline could tell she was proud of the result.

Adeline glanced at the time and sighed. She really should get moving if she wanted to find a dress before the wedding. She was not exactly in the mood to go shopping, but she didn’t want to show up looking like she had spent a whole week in bed either.

She ran a hand through her hair and sighed.

"Well, I guess I better get going," she muttered to herself.

It was time to step outside and rejoin the society.
