Chapter 212: Injured!
"Get ready," Cassian murmured to Adeline, stepping protectively in front of her.
Adeline’s eyes burned with defiance. She was exhausted, yes, but she wasn’t about to back down. "I don’t need you to shield me," she said, summoning the last of her strength.
Cassian didn’t argue. He knew better than to underestimate her, even in her current state.
Lucas intended to end it once and for all. It would be either he or Cassian, only one will remain. Today will be the end of all his efforts.
As Lucas advanced across the bridge, the remaining assassins rallied behind him. The air grew thick with tension, and the faint hum of magic crackled in the distance.
Cassian’s mind raced. They were outnumbered and outmatched, but he wasn’t going to let Lucas win. Not here. Not ever.
"Adeline," he said quietly, his voice steady despite the chaos around them. "We’ll end this together."
She nodded, her lightning sparking faintly as she prepared for the fight of her life.
Lucas smirked as he reached the centre of the bridge, his confidence unshaken.
"In my last life, you brutally killed me... My dear older brother. But this time... This time I will have to return the favour. And you, Adeline Kendrick. It’s your bad luck from associating with someone like him."
Adeline’s eyes flashed. "Funny," she said coldly. "I was just thinking the same about you. Look at all the lives you have doomed."
Lucas’s eyes narrowed at her words. What a cocky kid.
Cassian unleashed a torrent of ice, aiming to destabilise the bridge and send Lucas and his men plunging into the water below. But Lucas was able to counter it stabilising the bridge, Cassian could have succeeded if it was simply him against Lucas...
But there were many assassins surrounding them, attacking them at the same time.
Adeline fought relentlessly, her lightning crackling in bursts as she deflected the barrage of attacks. Sweat dripped down her temple, her muscles screaming in protest with every movement. She was exhausted but determined not to falter.
But then, the Goddess’s voice echoed in her mind, sharp and panicked.
"It’s him! Adeline, he’s the anomaly I detected! He’s not supposed to be here... not like this!"
Adeline’s brow furrowed as she struggled to focus on the fight. "What are you talking about? Who—"
"He came back! Just like Annora! He returned to this timeline!" the Goddess screamed, her tone frantic.
The words hit Adeline like a lightning strike of their own. He came back? Someone else had returned, just like Annora? It was too much to process in the middle of a life-or-death battle. Her concentration slipped, her reflexes faltering for a crucial moment.
An assassin saw his chance and struck. His blade, aimed with precision, found its mark. The cold steel bit into her neck, slicing through skin and muscle. Blood poured from the wound, warm and thick, staining her clothes as her body stiffened in shock.
Pain radiated through her like wildfire, and her vision blurred. The world tilted as her knees buckled beneath her. She stumbled backward, her foot slipping on the icy edge of the pond.
"Adeline!"
Cassian’s voice roared through the chaos, but she couldn’t respond. Her legs gave out completely, and she fell, her body plunging into the frigid water below.
The shock of the icy pond tore through her senses, a sharp contrast to the burning pain in her neck. She gasped instinctively, water rushing into her lungs as her body sank beneath the surface. The muffled sounds of the battle faded, replaced by the deafening silence of the water surrounding her.
Cassian’s eyes widened in horror as he saw her fall. The assassins no longer mattered—nothing mattered except reaching her. Without hesitation, he dove into the pond, his body slicing through the water like an arrow.
The freezing temperature didn’t faze him; his only focus was on Adeline. His sharp eyes scanned the murky depths until he saw her faint silhouette drifting downward, her blood trailing in crimson ribbons through the water.
Panic surged through him as he swam with all his might, his heart pounding like a drum. His hands reached out, grabbing her limp body and pulling her close. Her eyes fluttered weakly, and he saw the wound on her neck, the blood still seeping from it.
"Adeline," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Stay with me."
Thankfully, some of the academy officials sensed that there was something wrong like Cassian had anticipated and arrived at the location, ready to fight. They assumed monsters must have cornered them but contrary to their expectations... It was people.
Since they came prepared they were able to subdue most of them. Their eyes fell on Prince Lucas who emerged from the water, wounded. And to the side was Cassian and in his arms, an injured Adeline.
The moment Lucas realised that his plan was not unfolding like expected he prepared a cover for himself. Using a knife he inflicted a wound on himself and tossed himself into the water. This would be a simple attack on the royal family... A very possible explanation.
"What happened here..." One of the professors asked.
"It was an ambush," he gasped, falling to his knees dramatically. "We were overwhelmed... Adeline and I... we barely escaped with our lives!"
The officials exchanged uneasy glances, their attention shifting between Lucas and the scene around them. But before anyone could press for details, a sharp, sudden shriek echoed through the air.
Lucas’s eyes widened in shock as he felt a searing pain in his shoulder. A massive icicle had pierced through his flesh, pinning him momentarily in place. He let out a strangled cry, collapsing to the ground as blood poured from the wound.
The officials turned to see Cassian, still clutching Adeline in one arm, his free hand raised, icy magic shimmering around it. His face was a mask of fury, his usual composed demeanour. shattered by rage.
"Cassian!" one of the professors shouted in alarm.
He... He can wield ice?
