Chapter 194: First Class

Eventually, Layla flopped onto her bed with a dramatic sigh. "This place is amazing, isn’t it?" she said, staring up at the ceiling. "So much to learn, so many people to meet... It’s like a dream come true."

Adeline nodded thoughtfully, leaning against the bedframe. "It is," she said, though her tone was more measured.

Layla tilted her head up to look at Adeline but soon realised she could not see through the wood. "You seem like you have a lot on your mind," she said, her voice softer than before.

Adeline blinked, caught off guard by the sudden shift in tone. "Maybe," she admitted.

"Well, don’t worry too much," Layla said with a grin. "Whatever it is, I am sure you’ll figure it out. You seem like the kind of person who can handle anything."

Adeline did not know how to respond to that, so she simply smiled. Layla truly saw the best in people.

The three girls continued to chat for a while longer, their conversation flowing easily despite their different personalities. By the time they decided to call it a night, the dormitory felt less like a strange, new place and more like the beginning of something meaningful.

Adeline sat up and glanced down at Layla, who was already fast asleep, her messy blond hair spilling across her pillow. Maia was tidying up her corner one last time before settling in, her movements calm and methodical.

Adeline lay back against the cool sheets, staring up at the ceiling. She wanted to make more friends, preferably ones who were not the protagonists and she did! These girls were so kind and wonderful. She looked forward to spending the next few years with them.

The next morning, Adeline woke up Layla and Maia chattering away, well, Layla chattering away and Maia was listening with much interest.

She was talking about how she missed her mother and how it was her first time away from her. Adeline’s gaze was on her hair though, it became even more messy! She should not be going to the classes like this! But no time to waste, Adeline was already late.

Seeing those two ready meant that the bathroom was free so Adeline quickly hopped in and got dressed. She wore the academy uniform and looked at herself in the mirror. This was going to be her look for a while. Time to get used to it.

It was actually quite comfortable and light. Far better than the ballgowns she had to wear.

Once she stepped out she saw Layla admiring herself in the mirror. Her messy blond hair was tightly tied up.

"It looks so good! I could never get my hair to comply! You are very skilled!" She exclaimed. She twirled around and let her braid move. She loved it! She turned and gave Maia a thumbs up.

And Maia let out a bright, gummy smile. She expected Layla’s hair to be rough but it was much softer than she expected. Of course, she was a nobleman’s daughter, her hair would be given the best treatment.

And indeed it was. Layla didn’t know how to tame her hair, usually, she had it done for her.

Adeline smiled at the duo, they seemed to be getting along well.

"Shall we?" Adeline asked. They nodded in agreement and set off.

They had a few classes that were shared, such as Magic Theory and History, Combat Training, Ethics, and Responsibility.

As for the separate classes, the offensive faction had, Advanced Combat Magic, Siege Magic, Tracking Magic, and Duel Mastery. They had everything that would help in the battlefield.

Although they were not at war with another kingdom or empire, they were constantly at war with the monsters that plagued the lands they called home.

The defence faction had Shield and Barrier techniques, Reinforcement Magic, Counterspells and disruption, Endurance and Energy conservation.

Finally, the harmoniser faction had Environmental Manipulation, Spell Amplification, Balance and Support Magic, and Communication Magic.

Once they entered the classroom, Adeline’s sharp eyes immediately noticed Theresa seated front and centre, her posture rigid and poised as if she was preparing to claim the top spot in the class.

Adeline had no interest in engaging with her antics, and it seemed Maia shared the sentiment. Together, they quietly made their way to the third row, choosing seats that allowed them a good view of the front while maintaining a comfortable distance from Theresa.

However, Theresa’s restless energy was palpable. Her eyes darted around the room before finally landing on Layla, who had just walked in behind Adeline and Maia.

Seizing the opportunity, Theresa approached Layla with a bright, overly friendly demeanour. "Layla! Why don’t you come sit with me? There’s plenty of room up front." Her tone was sweet, but it carried a distinct undercurrent of expectation, as though refusal was not an option.

Layla, to her credit, didn’t falter. With a kind smile, she replied, "Sorry, I will be sitting in the third row with my roommates."

The simplicity of Layla’s refusal struck a nerve with Theresa. She had anticipated compliance, especially in front of the watching eyes of their classmates.

A subtle flush of embarrassment crept up her neck, but she masked it quickly with a strained smile. "Oh, of course," she said, though her voice had lost its earlier enthusiasm.

Layla, entirely unbothered, moved past her and slid into the seat beside Maia, who looked at her with a mixture of surprise and admiration. Theresa, however, lingered for a moment longer, her face tightening as she glanced toward Adeline.

Theresa knew better than to confront Adeline directly—her family name alone made her untouchable—but the disdain in her narrowed eyes as they briefly flicked to Maia was unmistakable.

Theresa returned to her seat, her shoulders stiff, and an angry glare settled on her face. It was clear she was fuming internally, her carefully constructed image taking a hit in front of the class. Despite this, she said nothing, likely knowing that escalating the situation would only further embarrass her.

Maia leaned closer to Layla and whispered, "That was... amazing. You just said no."

Layla gave a small laugh and shrugged. "I have a knack for these things," she said with a confident smile. "You can usually tell who’s worth spending time with and who’s not."

Adeline smirked at the exchange but said nothing, watching as Theresa fidgeted at her desk. The girl clearly hated being ignored, and the fact that Layla had so casually dismissed her offer must have been a hard pill to swallow.

Adeline knew it would only fuel Theresa’s animosity. What she did not expect was how Layla handled the situation, she would have never thought of that bubbly, lovely girl to give a hard refusal, no polite chatter, a simple, straightforward refusal.

The room buzzed with quiet chatter as more students filed in, but Theresa remained stiff and silent at her desk, her frustration simmering just beneath the surface.

Adeline made a mental note to keep an eye on her, not out of concern for herself, but for Maia and Layla. Bullying came in many forms, and someone as petty as Theresa wasn’t likely to give up so easily.
