Chapter 191: Roommates

The reality was much different than Adeline expected. This time Cassian changed. He found an instructor and he wields his powers with ice. But instead of dismantling those on the second prince’s side... He planned to manipulate them.

He planned to cause way more chaos than he did in the original story. She thought he became kinder, but due to her intervention, he became more twisted than she would have guessed.

Victoria nudged her gently, pulling Adeline out of her thoughts. "You’re unusually quiet," Victoria remarked, her sharp eyes studying Adeline closely.

Adeline gave a small shrug, forcing a smile onto her face. "Just thinking."

Victoria raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further.

As the tour wrapped up, Adeline found her gaze drifting back to Benedict. He was speaking animatedly to a group of first-year students, his red hair catching the sunlight like a beacon.

For a moment, Adeline felt a pang of nostalgia. She remembered how Benedict had once been cold and distant, a product of the strained relationships in his life. But now, he seemed so...different.

Perhaps the academy really did have the power to change people.

Adeline glanced toward the horizon, where the towering spires of the academy gleamed against the blue sky. She took a deep breath, the resolve in her heart hardening further.

This year would be the turning point—not just for Cassian, but for all of them.

Adeline settled into her dorm fairly quickly. The room was spacious and well-kept, much better than she had expected. The high ceiling and large windows let in plenty of natural light, giving the space an airy feel.

She ran her fingers over the neatly made bed and noted the polished wooden furniture—it was clear the academy took pride in providing a comfortable living environment for its students.

Sharing a room wasn’t something Adeline particularly liked, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker. She’d survive. Who knows? Maybe her roommates and she would even become close friends.

The thought made her smile as she glanced around the room.

Her gaze landed on the four beds. Wait, wasn’t she told there would only be three students per room? She frowned, her brow furrowing slightly in confusion. It wasn’t a huge issue, but she couldn’t help but wonder if there had been some kind of mix-up.

She helped Victoria into her room first, there was a normal bed and a bunk bed. In her room, there were two bunk beds.

Two of the beds were already claimed, their owners evident from the state of things. One corner of the room was meticulously organised. Clothes were folded neatly, books were arranged by size, and even the pillows were fluffed to perfection.

The other corner, however, was the complete opposite. A chaotic mess of clothing, trinkets, and half-unpacked bags littered the floor and bed. It was almost impressive how quickly someone could create such disarray.

She chuckled to herself. It would be nice to spend her days with girls. Up till now the only female friend she had was Victoria! She was surrounded by too much testosterone! Her brothers, the male leads... It was too much!

She would love to have sworn sisters!

Adeline sighed and moved toward the only unclaimed bed. The top bunk. She wanted a bottom bunk but she was too late. It was fine! She was not going to let this dampen her mood!

She hauled her bag onto the mattress and began making herself at home—or at least as much as she could without unpacking. She wasn’t in the mood for that right now.

Instead, she placed her luggage neatly to the side, deciding to deal with it later. It wasn’t like she was in a rush. She glanced at the other beds again and felt a small pang of curiosity about her roommates. Who were they? Would they get along?

Adeline shook her head and chuckled to herself. She was overthinking things again.

It was a pity Victoria wasn’t her roommate. That would have made things a lot more fun. They could have stayed up late talking or sharing the tea of the day! Victoria did not look like she would enjoy gossip but she had the most gossip!

She was too quiet that people forget she was there sometimes and spill their secrets.

With nothing left to do in her room, Adeline decided to head to the cafeteria. Most of the students were probably there, chatting and enjoying their first evening at the academy. It was better than sitting alone in an empty dorm.

As she walked down the hallways, her boots clicking softly against the polished stone floor, she noticed the other students staring. She kept her head high and her expression neutral.

It was not anything she wasn’t already used to. Still, it was annoying at times. They don’t treat her like a friend. They either wanted to use her to climb ranks in society or were after her brothers.

At least here, in the academy where social standing meant nothing and only merit was important... She hoped to make true friends.

She caught snippets of their conversations, though she pretended not to hear.

"Isn’t that the Marquess’s daughter?"

"She’s even prettier in person."

"I heard she’s a lightning mage. That’s so rare."

"Do you think she’s as stuck-up as they say?"

Adeline rolled her eyes but didn’t react otherwise. It was easier to ignore them than to engage. She knew how rumours worked—they spread like wildfire, often with no basis in reality. If she paid them any attention, it would only fuel the fire.

Still, the constant attention was tiring. By the time she reached the cafeteria, she was already wishing for some peace and quiet.

The large hall was bustling with activity. Students filled the long tables, laughing and chatting as they shared their excitement about the academy. The smell of freshly baked bread and roasted meats filled the air, mingling with the sound of clinking plates and cheerful voices.

She scanned the crowd for familiar faces but she could not find Victoria. "Hah..." Adeline let out a sigh. She knew Victoria well, she would hate this environment. The sound, the smell, everything was overwhelming, she would rather starve than come here.

Adeline thought grabbing something for Victoria before she left. But for now, she intended to enjoy a nice lunch.

She sat down and took a bite of her meal, letting the noise of the cafeteria fade into the background. For a moment, she allowed herself to relax.

There were many empty tables so she didn’t have to worry about sharing a table with strangers. She thought about what her roommates might look like or what their personalities would be.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps approaching her table. She looked up to see a girl with dark, wavy hair and warm brown eyes standing hesitantly in front of her.

"Um, hi," the girl said, offering a shy smile. "Is it okay if I sit here?"

Adeline nodded. "Sure, go ahead."

The girl placed her tray on the table and sat down across from Adeline. For a moment, neither of them spoke, but the girl’s nervous energy was palpable.

"I’m Maia," she said finally, breaking the silence. "I think we’re roommates."

Adeline blinked, surprised. "Oh, really? That’s great. I’m Adeline."
