Chapter 185: The Marquess’ Disapproval
She threw another bolt of lightning, this one larger and faster than before. Aaron tried to block it with a shield of fire, but the bolt broke through, striking him near his shoulders.
He staggered back, his sword falling from his hand as he clutched his shoulder. "Ah!!!"
He could feel a searing pain, a pain that he felt in his bones. Just a brush from lightning was enough to render one paralysed. This power... He couldn’t believe his sister possessed such power.
Before he could finish, Adeline charged forward, her sword raised. Aaron managed to recover just in time, grabbing his sword and parrying her strike. Adeline’s breathing was stressed, she was struggling to keep up.
She needed to put an end to this duel before she exhausted herself entirely. She could not draw this out and tire him... That was not a tactic that would work. He had been training for longer than she had.
The two siblings clashed in the centre of the ring, their swords locked as they pushed against each other. Sparks of lightning and embers of fire flew in all directions, the air around them crackling with energy.
Aaron, being older and stronger, began to overpower her. Adeline’s arms shook as she struggled to hold her ground. But she refused to give up. With a surge of determination, she let go of her sword with one hand and placed her palm against Aaron’s chest.
Her sweaty palms could feel his racing heartbeat. Her hands were shivery. She was prepared to put an end to this duel, she could not hold out any longer.
All of this was happening in a mere second, just as her heart was racing, so was her brain. Endless possibilities played out in her mind.
She was going to use her powers again, she was prepared to strike him but she could not... She could not hurt her brother...
"Stop." She requested. She raised her head to look at him.
Aaron complied and stopped immediately, he knew that if she got her way he would have been blasted away... At the back of his mind ,he was sure that his father would not approve of the way this duel ended, and he would be right.
The Marquess sighed. He still thought that she should have gone all out. Adeline turned to see that her father had his eyebrows furrowed, he looked at them in disapproval.
Meanwhile, the Captain was lost in thought. This young child was able to take on his star pupil. He should be training him harder then.
Still, they were just children so the Marquess relented.
"Well done," the Marquess said finally. "Both of you."
Adeline allowed herself a small smile, even as she fought to catch her breath. She had won, but more importantly, she had proven to herself that she could hold her own.
As the two siblings walked off the training grounds, side by side, the Marquess couldn’t help but look at them with a complicated expression. They had a long way to go, but they were already shaping up to be formidable warriors.
Adeline sat on the edge of her bed, the soft fabric of her blanket crumpled beneath her fingers. Her body ached from the rigorous duel with Aaron, but it wasn’t the bruises or the exhaustion that troubled her.
It was the memory of his face—his expression in the moment before she nearly blasted him with her powers.
She leaned back against the pillows, staring at the ceiling. The duel had been a test, nothing more. Aaron had smirked at the beginning, teasing her as he always did, confident in his abilities...
And then came the moment. The moment when she’d found an opening, when she’d raised her sword, lightning sparking along the blade. Aaron had stumbled, his defences down, and she had gone for the strike.
She threw the sword aside and aimed for his heart.
She closed her eyes, the memory of his face flashing vividly in her mind. There had been a flicker of something there—surprise, yes, but also fear.
Her stomach twisted. Fear wasn’t supposed to be part of this. It had been a training match, not a real fight. She hadn’t been trying to hurt him, not really. But in that instant, when she’d seen the fear in his eyes, she realised just how easily she could have.
Her fingers clenched around the blanket as a wave of nausea rolled over her. What if she hadn’t stopped in time?
What if her lightning had gone too far, or her blade had struck deeper than intended? Aaron was her brother, her family. She could never forgive herself if she caused him real harm.
She let out a shaky breath, the weight of the moment settling heavily on her. This wasn’t like sparring with wooden swords or practising forms under her father’s watchful eye. This had felt different—real. And that scared her.
Adeline glanced at her hands, still faintly tingling from the lingering energy of her lightning. The power she wielded was immense, capable of both protecting and destroying. But what if she lost control? What if she hurt someone she cared about?
A soft knock on the door broke her train of thought. One of the maids entered, carrying a tray with a cup of tea.
"Lady Adeline, you should rest," the maid said gently, placing the tray on the bedside table.
Adeline nodded absently, her mind still on the duel. As the maid left, she picked up the cup, the warmth of the tea grounding her slightly.
She couldn’t shake the image of Aaron’s face. It wasn’t just about winning or losing—it was about the responsibility that came with her power. She needed to be better, not just in skill but in understanding.
Because next time, it might not be a training match. And next time, she might not have the luxury of holding back.
What would she do when the time came... And she would have to take someone’s life?
Adeline shook her head. What should she do? She was not in the modern world anymore, the laws here were different... If she has to go to battle, she must be prepared to take a life.
She rolled around the bed not knowing what to do.
"What do you say, dear author?" She asked, looking up at the ceiling. She was hoping for a profound answer but knowing the source... She doubted it would be anything useful.
"What do I say? I say go ahead, kill some people." The Goddess remarked in a cheerful tone.
Adeline stared at the ceiling in speechlessness. She knew the author had quite the personality but come on...
"You seem too on board with killing people. Have you killed anyone before?" Adeline’s eyes narrowed, this person was definitely suspicious. Only a deranged person would write a story like this.
"No... I am just surrounded by death a lot. I have grown numb to it." She replied.
Adeline blinked and gulped. What the hell was she supposed to say to that?!
Ignoring it she asked the author. "Are there any other ruins I can explore? Maybe I can find scrolls or information on techniques that can help me wield lightning better."
"There are. But let’s give the ruins a break for now. Like your father said, lightning and fire are not too different.
