Chapter 159: Angry Dad
Adeline matched his pace, keeping just enough distance to avoid detection. Aaron followed reluctantly, muttering complaints under his breath but remaining vigilant.
He had no idea what his sister had in mind, she wouldn’t tell him! To be fair, he did not ask. All he could do was stay alert while chasing the suspicious man. If they get kidnapped or murdered, he was going to throw her under the bus very hard!
They had to work hard! Although their height was helpful in staying hidden, catching up with this man was hard! He was like a slippery snake! Clearly, he was someone experienced.
"Do you even know who he is?" Aaron whispered harshly.
"No," Adeline admitted, her voice steady, "But I have a feeling he’s connected to the intelligence guild. And if he is, he’ll lead me us to our father."
Aaron groaned. "You’re betting on a hunch? Fantastic." He wanted to quit and lift this gremlin by the collar and drag her back to the hotel they were staying. But she was slippery. If he wasn’t keeping up the pace for one second, she would almost disappear from his sight!
What was he doing? Why did he become the lackey of a five-year-old? Is this what it feels like to have a younger sister? The older brother experience. Why doesn’t Alaric have this experience, hmm?
Very unfair!
The man suddenly stopped, his body tense and alert. He turned his head slightly, scanning the area. Adeline and Aaron pressed themselves against the wall of a nearby alley, holding their breath.
"Who’s there?!" the man barked, his voice sharp.
Before Adeline could step forward, a dagger glinted in the dim light, flying straight toward them.
Aaron reacted instantly, thrusting his hand forward. A jet of flame shot out, intercepting the dagger in mid-air. The heat was so intense that the blade melted into a molten puddle, dripping onto the cobblestones.
The man’s eyes widened in shock, his stance shifting as he prepared for a potential fight.
Adeline stepped forward, pulling back her hood. Her pink hair shimmered in the dim light, unmistakable even in the shadows.
"I’m not here to fight," she said calmly. "Take me to my father."
The man froze his expression a mix of disbelief and recognition. "You’re... the Marquess’s daughter," he stammered. He clearly didn’t expect them to be here!
This wasn’t exactly the safer parts of town! He had to escort them back, otherwise their boss... Well, it is best not to imagine it.
"Sharp observation," Aaron quipped, stepping forward with a cocky grin. "Now, are you going to cooperate, or do I need to melt something else?" If he was going to get dragged with Adeline, might as well have some fun.
Adeline: Is threatening people fun?
Aaron: A little bit, yeah.
The man hesitated for only a moment before nodding. "Follow me," he said, his voice still wary but respectful.
The man led them through a series of twisting alleys, deeper into the underbelly of the Capital. The air grew colder, the streets narrower, and the buildings more dilapidated. Adeline noted every turn, every landmark.
She wanted to remember this place. It will be useful in the future.
Finally, they arrived at a nondescript building that looked abandoned. The man knocked three times on the door in a specific rhythm. A hidden panel slid open, revealing a pair of suspicious eyes.
"They’re with me," the man said quickly. The panel shut, and a moment later, the door creaked open.
Inside, the atmosphere changed instantly. The space was bustling with activity—people hunched over maps and documents, others whispering urgently in corners. This was no ordinary hideout; it was a hub of intelligence and strategy.
Adeline’s heart raced. She did not think this through, did she? She wanted to find her father and explain her plan, but how would he react to her being here?! She was going to get lectured.
"Wait here," the man instructed, disappearing into another room.
"You know, maybe this was not the best idea." Adeline slowly whispered to her brother.
"We are already here! You should have thought about this before!" He almost screamed. Not only was she going to get lectures, but also him! He didn’t want this at all!
"I am five! You are older than me! You should be more responsible!" Adeline countered.
"..." Aaron was speechless! This girl-
Adeline barely had time to process the sounds of approaching footsteps when the door burst open, revealing her father.
He was furious, and his anger radiated off him in waves—literally. His mastery of fire magic made the air crackle with heat, small sparks flying unpredictably from his fingertips as he stormed toward her.
Aaron quickly hid behind Adeline. He didn’t care if he looked like a wimp! He just wanted to survive!
"Adeline Elizabeth Kendrick!" The Marquess roared.
Adeline was too stunned to speak- She expected him to be... Mad, but wasn’t this too much?!
Too much?! What are a couple of children doing in the capital with no guards around them?! If the Marquess could read her thoughts he would be provoked even more!
His booming voice silenced even the boldest of the mercenaries who dared not glance in his direction. "What in God’s name are you doing here? Have I been too lenient on you?!"
Adeline instinctively stepped back, almost bumping into Aaron, who firmly kept her in place by placing his hands on her shoulders. She shot him a glare, hissing under her breath, "What are you doing?! Help me!"
"Not a chance," Aaron muttered, looking anywhere but at her father. "I’m not suicidal."
Adeline swallowed hard and forced a weak smile. "H-Hello, Father," she stammered, trying to sound nonchalant despite the sparks flying ever closer to her. For a brief moment, she wondered if he might actually hit her. No, he wouldn’t... Right?
The Marquess stepped closer, his fiery aura making the very air shimmer around him. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done? Sneaking into the Capital like this?" He shifted his gaze onto Aaron who was hiding behind Adeline and trying his best to make himself scarce.
He was cursing Alaric who let him take the fall! He wasn’t going to fall for it this time! Until Alaric leaves for the academy, he will be responsible for Adeline, he will not get involved anymore!
He carefully looked at their father who looked like he was going to kill someone!
"And you! Don’t you know better than to go along with your sister’s plans?!"
Aaron felt wronged! It wasn’t like she would listen to him! And also, father was the type to go along with her whims so he has no right to scold him now! Of course, he couldn’t say any of it right now. He closed his eyes and hoped his father would calm down.
Adeline winced, feeling more like a scolded child than ever. The murmurs from the mercenaries and spies in the room only made it worse. "Father," she started, her voice trembling. "Can we... Maybe talk somewhere more private?"
The Marquess glared at her, his anger only barely held in check, but after a moment he gave a sharp nod. "Fine. Let’s discuss how you’ve decided to court disaster—privately."
