Chapter 149: Your Brother
Chapter 149: Your Brother
When the Duchess was bedridden, the Duke took up her responsibilities and he handed over some of them to Anna... Back when he trusted her.
They didn’t know what she did to them but no one dared to reveal that they were feeding her information and basically acting like spies... This only made the situation more complicated...
"She’s careful, meticulous even. We need someone willing to talk." The Duke whispered.
Who was behind Anna? Certainly, she didn’t do it all by herself... This operation was too big to be done by only her. They needed to wait until the mastermind revealed themselves.
"Whoever it is," Adeline said, her voice firm, "We’ll expose them. But we can’t act rashly. One misstep and we’ll lose everything."
Cassian’s gaze lingered on Adeline as her focus shifted entirely to Benedict. Her laughter came easily when she was with him. She was much more relaxed and easygoing.
The sight stirred a simmering frustration within him, a jealousy he struggled to suppress.
Though Cassian tried to participate in the conversation, he quickly realized that Adeline was far more comfortable with Benedict.
She occasionally made an effort to include him, her warm smile directed his way, but it felt like a fleeting kindness, not the connection he craved. How could she speak to Benedict so easily?
Was it because of pity? He could be more pitiful... Cassian didn’t understand what he needed to do, he wasn’t used to feeling this way.
"I’m so grateful for your help, Adeline," Benedict said, his tone soft and genuine as he reached out to take her hand.
He forced himself to maintain a neutral expression, though jealousy churned in his chest.
The moment was too much for Cassian. He forced a polite smile. "Shall we go to the garden? The room feels a bit stuffy."
Adeline immediately perked up at the suggestion, her short attention span steering her away from the tension. "That is a great idea!" She said, already heading toward the door.
Cassian followed Adeline, his steps brisk, with Benedict trailing behind him. As they exited the room, Cassian glanced over his shoulder and noticed Benedict’s gaze fixed on Adeline.
His voice dropped low, a sharp edge lacing his words. "You should know that it’s rude to come without an invitation." His voice was low enough that only Benedict could hear.
Benedict stopped abruptly, his expression caught between surprise and indignation.
Cassian didn’t wait for a response, continuing on his path toward the garden. He kept his back straight, his presence commanding as if daring Benedict to challenge him further.
Benedict composed himself, shaking off the jab, and quickened his pace to catch up. He wasn’t about to let Cassian’s words affect him. He never thought of Cassian as a friend... Still, his words... They were right but hurtful.
In the letter, Adeline pleaded with him, asking him to join her in the royal palace. With his mother recovered and his relationship with his father mended, he had time to be a kid again.
His friend asked so earnestly, how could he refuse? Although he didn’t have an official invitation, he decided to go. His father glanced at him and understood the matter. He didn’t say anything.
He was the child of the Northern Duke, it should be fine for him to go without an official invitation. So, he didn’t stop Benedict either. Besides, he was curious about Adeline. Whenever his son heard her name, he’d get excited.
To Benedict, this was his first real friend! She hadn’t given up on him even when he ’pushed’ her away.
The Northern Duke wondered if this was young love? He didn’t know, his son would never admit to it, or rather, he did not realise it yet. With a smirk, he granted Benedict permission to leave for the palace.
The trio stepped into the palace gardens, no matter how many times Adeline came here, she would be left mesmerised by the scenery.
Adeline’s eyes sparkled as she took in the view. "It’s so beautiful here," she said, her voice tinged with awe.
Cassian took the opportunity to seize control of the moment. He began pointing out various plants and sharing their significance, his tone calm and confident. For once, he didn’t wait for her to come to him; instead, he actively drew her into the conversation.
Adeline listened attentively, nodding along as Cassian spoke. Though she occasionally glanced at Benedict, she seemed genuinely engaged with Cassian’s explanations.
As Adeline admired a patch of vibrant blue flowers, a flicker of movement caught her eye. She turned her head slightly, her brows furrowing as she focused on the figure in the distance.
"Isn’t that... Your brother?" She asked, tilting her head toward Cassian.
Cassian stiffened at her words, though he quickly masked his reaction. He wanted to correct her, he wanted to say ’half-brother’ but he stopped himself.
Cassian didn’t like this brother of his. His mother did everything to mould him into the perfect prince but for some reason, his father favoured Lucas more. Why? In which way was he better than him?
He tried to tell himself that his feelings weren’t rational. And that his father wasn’t much of a father. His father had to have started favouring Lucas just to put down his influence. His mother told him many times...
That his father cared about him. Heh, he would still take his father’s ’care’ over his mother’s. He was biding his time... And at the right moment...
Cassian decided that he didn’t need anyone. Especially not his parents. Both were opportunistic people who were selfish, they would never think of anyone beyond themselves.
At least his father had an excuse. The mighty emperor who thinks about the greater good, what excuse did his mother have? He didn’t know if he was jealous of Lucas... He shook his head.
His mother planned to replace him with the new child she was pregnant with. How could he, the Crown prince of the Lunaria Empire, the only child of the Empress be jealous of someone like him!
Cassian kept telling himself this over and over again. He turned to look at Adeline, he never craved anyone’s affection before... But that was all before he met her. She gave out her affection so easily but was so wary around him... Why?
He had met many noble children, they all fawn over him, everyone but her.
Adeline kept looking at him with wide eyes, did she expect him to invite Lucas over? That was the kind of person Adeline was, she tried to see the good in everyone, right? In everyone except him. Hah.
