Chapter 139: Almost Died!
Adeline paused in her inspection and turned to him. "Protect you, maybe," She said lightly. "I’m not so sure it’s friendly to intruders like me." Was the Goddess going to kick her out once she realised that she was about to steal... Cough, borrow some artifacts?
A small smile tugged at Dimitri’s lips, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Still, you shouldn’t have come here. You could’ve been hurt—or worse."
There he goes again. Adeline shook her head. He seemed to be worried about her safety more than his own. She just healed his injuries and he seems to be A-okay now. He seemed to have the energy to lecture her too.
Adeline reached out, tracing a finger along one of the symbols. They were emitting a faint glow but she couldn’t tell how it was happening. She ignored it because it wasn’t important anyway.
"What do you think is behind that door?" she asked. It was mostly to the Goddess but Dimitri gave his input. The Goddess on the other hand remained silent. Adeline couldn’t help but wonder why she was offering her no help!
She shook her head. Whatever, she could do this herself... Couldn’t she?
"Whatever it might contain, I can sense that there will be many traps... Adeline don’t go in there." He pleaded earnestly. But was Adeline the type to do sensible deeds? No.
Taking a deep breath she focussed on that unmovable door, she lifted her leg and kicked it with all her might. "HI-YAH!" Time to use all the martial arts lessons she took when she was in the sixth grade.
The good thing was that the door did open, but the bad thing was that it opened before her foot could even land on it! With the force she used to kick it open, she fell forward and almost tumbled down the stairs!
Thankfully Dimitri was able to catch her by the arm at the right time. He was barely able to catch her, just as she was falling he used some of his wind magic to pull her towards himself.
’What the hell was that?!’ She screamed internally at the Goddess!
"How would I know?! Who knows what the Sun Goddess was thinking when she constructed this temple?!" She yelled back. How was she responsible for any of this?!
How did the door suddenly open? There was no indication whatsoever about it. It just suddenly slid open. This ruin was just as unpredictable as the Goddess!
Adeline took a good look at the stairs below... They went so deep! Imagine if she fell! It would be over for her. This would be the second time that she almost died!
Adeline’s heart raced as she stumbled back, gripping Dimitri’s arm for stability. She shot a glare at the empty space above, mentally directing it toward the Goddess.
"You’re the one who brought me here!" Adeline hissed under her breath. She was so glad Dimitri was right here with her.
Dimitri glanced at her, his brow furrowing. "Are you... Talking to someone?" His lady does this quite often. Was the Goddess someone so casual? The more he learnt from their interactions the more he started to lose the respect he had for this Goddess!
Adeline bit her lip. "Not someone useful," she muttered. She almost just died, she didn’t care if she looked like she was insane, screaming at the ceiling and talking to herself.
"Hey!" The Goddess took offence to this. She was trying the best she could okay! Adeline rolled her eyes yet again. Some day they will get stuck up there from the sheer amount of eye-rolling.
It’s easy to help from far away! Meanwhile, she was the one going through physical exhaustion and putting herself in dangerous situations. She didn’t
They both peered down the staircase spiralling into the earth, the faint glow of torches below flickering like distant fireflies. Just- just how deep did this run?
"This is going to take forever," Adeline groaned, peering down the seemingly endless descent.
Dimitri’s grip on her arm tightened protectively. "We should turn back."
"Not happening," Adeline said, brushing him off. "There’s something important down there. I can feel it."
Dimitri hesitated, then sighed. "If you insist on going, I’ll follow. But don’t say I didn’t warn you."
What choice did he have, he already asked her multiple times to turn back, but since she was going inside alone, he would have to follow her in as her knight.
The stairs were narrow, the walls damp and cold to the touch. Each step echoed ominously, the sound swallowed by the oppressive darkness below. Adeline tried to keep her nerves in check, but every creak and groan of the ancient structure made her jump.
About halfway down, a loud click sounded beneath Adeline’s boot. Her heart plummeted.
"What did you do?" Dimitri asked, his voice tight with alarm.
Before she could respond, arrows shot out from hidden panels in the walls, their deadly tips gleaming in the torchlight.
"Down!" Dimitri shouted, pulling her into a crouch.
The arrows missed by mere inches, clattering against the opposite wall before falling harmlessly to the ground.
Adeline glared at the empty air again. Did you copy all this from movies?!
The Goddess’s voice returned, defensive. I was a teenager, okay? Action movies were my jam. This ruin is cool, isn’t it?
Clearly, her love for action movies played a role in her world-building. And although she didn’t write this ruin into existence. Her wishes, her interests and her likes played a part in the construction of this world
Adeline’s jaw dropped. "It’s not cool! We’re dying out here!"
The Goddess didn’t reply, she didn’t know how to! She felt slightly guilty about it, it’s not like she planned this! If she had known that there would be traps, she would have warned the two children!
Dimitri stared at her, clearly bewildered. "Are you... Talking to the Goddess?" Who else could it be? Still, it was surprising that they talked so casually. He heard the tales about the great Sun Goddess... But seeing Adeline speak to her...
If Adeline knew what he was thinking she would be quick to defend the Sun Goddess! She was probably a great deity and not annoying like this story’s author at all!
Adeline scowled. "Not that she’s been any help. She’s just sitting back, enjoying the show!"
Dimitri blinked, processing this new information. If the Goddess truly was present, why wasn’t she assisting them? This was her ruins after all...
"If she’s there..." He ventured, "Can’t she guide us?"
Adeline snorted. "Guide us? She doesn’t even know where we are!" What an unhelpful Goddess she was!
