Chapter 131: He Left
Chapter 131: He Left
The Marquess’s gaze softened, but his concern remained. "You’re still so young. The Mage Tower will not show you mercy because of your age. It’s a den of monsters, Dimitri... Literally and figuratively. Once you embark on this journey, I cannot help you. It’s against the rules."
He has to survive in that damned forest that is infested with monsters. That was the trial. only if he survived it and reached the Mage Tower safely would he pass. And he would not be allowed to interfere.
He couldn’t do anything to protect him during that trial. And how could he live peacefully knowing that this child is out there... Surrounded by those horrendous monsters that are ready to pounce on him at any given moment.
"I understand." Dimitri bowed deeply, his hands clenched at his sides. "And I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me. But this is something I must do."
The Marquess studied him for a long moment, his eyes kept searching for any hint of hesitation. But Dimitri stood firm. Finally, the Marquess let out a long breath. "If this is truly your choice, then I won’t stand in your way. But know this—you will always have a place here if you ever need it."
"Thank you," Dimitri said, bowing again. "I won’t forget your kindness."
The Marquess rose from his chair and placed a hand on Dimitri’s shoulder. "You’re a brave boy, Dimitri. But bravery alone won’t see you through. Keep your wits about you, and trust your instincts. The Mage Tower is not kind to the reckless."
The Marquess still couldn’t understand why the boy was so determined to leave. They didn’t mistreat him, did they? He only asked him to watch over Adeline because he hoped his calm, and gentle nature would rub off on her.
Dimitri nodded, his heart swelling with determination. He’d made up his mind. This was his path, no matter how perilous.
The next morning, Adeline burst into the dining room, her face pale with shock and disbelief. "You’re what?" She demanded, staring at Dimitri. He sat calmly at the table, finishing his breakfast. He didn’t even flinch. He had expected some pushback from Adeline.
"I’m leaving," Dimitri said simply, setting his fork down. "For the Mage Tower."
Adeline’s hands slammed down on the table. "The Mage Tower? You’re ten years old, Dimitri! You can’t be serious!"
"I am," he said, meeting her gaze. "It’s time."
Adeline stared at him, her mind still struggling to comprehend things. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen.
In the novel, Dimitri didn’t leave for the Mage Tower until he was a teenager. Why was he doing this now? Was it because of her? Had her actions changed his path?
Why? Why does this keep happening?! Why can’t some things stay the same?! He- he is just a child! What if something happens to him?! Her heart felt heavy and she struggled to breathe.
"Dimitri, you don’t have to do this," She said, her voice much softer now. She was practically pleading. "You’re safe here. You have a home, a family-"
"And I’m grateful for that," he interrupted gently. "But this isn’t about safety. It’s about purpose. I need to do this, Adeline."
Why?! Why did he need to do this?! She thought she understood him. He wanted to be a knight... He had dreams of his own... But suddenly he changed his mind. She knew... He joined the Mage Tower because of desperation... For survival...
Had she done a bad job of giving him some sense of security? Why else would he go to such a dangerous place? She wanted him to go there... But only when he was stronger and older. When she knew he could take care of himself...
She wanted him to go there because of his talent and his interest in magic...
She shook her head, tears stinging her eyes. "You’re just a child. You don’t even know what you’re walking into. The trials... The dangers... They’re not meant for someone your age!"
"I’m not afraid," he said, his voice steady. "This is my choice, Adeline. Please respect it."
Adeline felt a lump rise in her throat. "You’re doing this because of me, aren’t you? You don’t have to go, Dimitri! Stay... Be my knight forever!"
Those words were something he always wanted to hear. He wished she would say it again. But, now was not the time. He wanted to become strong. He wanted to help her. If the world was against her, he wanted to be strong enough to fight it for her.
"I’m not afraid," he said, his voice steady. "This is my choice, Adeline. I want to do this."
Adeline was experiencing an immense amount of sadness. She was about to lose her best friend. But his words were genuine. It did sound like he really wanted to do this... And not something he was doing out of obligation, or gratitude...
Dimitri hesitated, then shook his head. "Do not overthink this, Adeline. You gave me hope. You made me believe I could be more than what I was. But this decision is mine."
She bit her lip, her hands trembling at her sides. "You could die, Dimitri."
"I won’t," he said firmly. "I’ll survive. For you."
Adeline’s breath hitched. She wanted to scream, to beg him to stay, but she knew it would do no good. Dimitri’s mind was made up.
The estate was quiet as Dimitri prepared to leave. Adeline watched from a distance, her chest tight with emotions she couldn’t fully understand. Alaric and Aaron stood beside her, their expressions grim.
"Are we really letting him go?" Aaron muttered, crossing his arms. "He’s just a kid."
He just came back from the trip... They missed the kid... But now he was leaving again, and this time it would be for a very long time. He hadn’t told them his plan... He did tell the Marquess however that he was aiming for the upper echelon.
"He’s determined," Alaric said quietly. "And we can’t hold him back. This is his choice."
Adeline clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. "I still don’t like it."
As Dimitri approached, carrying a small bag slung over his shoulder, he paused in front of Adeline. "I’ll come back." He said, his voice soft but resolute. "I promise."
Adeline forced a smile, though her eyes glistened with tears that she refused to let go of. "You’d better."
This is just temporary. Don’t you dare cry Adeline. She kept telling herself. She cried way too much in the past few days and she refuses to do it again. He will be back, she knew it.
Dimitri smiled faintly, then turned and began walking down the path, the weight of his decision heavy on his small shoulders. Adeline watched him go, her heart aching with worry and pride.
"I hope he knows what he’s doing," Aaron muttered. He crossed his arms. Seeing his sister be so hurt over Dimitri made him a bit jealous but he also felt sadness too. He became a good friend of theirs.
"He does," Alaric said, though his tone was uncertain. His eyebrows furrowed before he added, "He has to."
