Chapter 129: Surprised

But that wasn’t the most pressing issue. The bracelet, the signs of struggle, the forbidden magic— it all painted a grim picture. It couldn’t be, right? Edward couldn’t have done the unthinkable!

Annora was the heroine of the story! She should be fine! She couldn’t have... Edward couldn’t have... Could this world even survive without her? Adeline started to panic. Her life... Everyone else’s life would be at stake.

She didn’t want to admit it. She closed her eyes. Adeline’s chest tightened as the thought crossed her mind. Was Annora... Dead?

"No," she muttered to herself, clutching the bracelet tightly. "That can’t be."

She stood, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts. If Annora had died here, what did that mean for the story? For the future? Was this another consequence of her meddling? Or was it something else entirely—an event that was meant to happen all along?

Dimitri approached cautiously, his expression tense. "Adeline, what’s going on? What did you find?"

She hesitated, then turned to him, her face pale. "This bracelet... It belonged to Annora."

Dimitri frowned, trying to piece together the significance of her words. "Annora?"

He didn’t have a good impression of her in the slightest, he wished she would stay away from him and Adeline. But he could never wish harm on her. As much as she was a thorn in his eyes, he wished for her safety.

"Yes." Adeline’s voice was shaky. "If this is hers... Then something terrible happened here."

Dimitri glanced at the torn fabric and the dead wolves, his jaw tightening. "We need to leave. If the Holy Temple is involved, we shouldn’t stay here any longer than necessary."

Adeline nodded reluctantly, but her heart was heavy. As they made their way back toward the entrance of the cave, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this discovery was only the beginning of something far greater—and far more dangerous.

There were many unanswered questions. Was Annora dead? Did Edward kill her? He was obsessed with her... So he couldn’t have, right? If something did happen to her, then what would be the fate of this world?

She read many novels, including ones where an ordinary girl like her goes into a story, the heroine has always been the centre of the universe. The world would collapse without her. She can’t die...

As the weather calmed down, they headed down the mountain. Adeline took one last look at the Holy Temple before they teleported away from there. This time, Edward was watching.

He saw the light coming from the mountain. It was like a beacon. And who else other than Adeline could be the cause of it?

He quickly figured out that Adeline had cleansed the river, the cause of the plague. How long did she plan to hide it? People would start questioning the miracle after all.

He would definitely push the narrative that the new saintess has awakened... With the pressure from the commoners, she would have to bend to his will eventually.

But for now, he would have to focus on the upcoming battle. He wondered if she would reveal herself now. She wouldn’t want her father to lose the war, would she?

With a smirk on his face, he returned to his room. Whatever may happen, he will be the winner, he was sure of it.

Adeline arrived back at her family’s estate, the grand stone mansion looming tall and stately against the fading daylight. Before she could fully step out of the carriage, a familiar voice called out.

"Adeline!" Alaric, her eldest brother, strode towards her with quick steps. His expression was full of relief and his blond hair was messy. She could tell that he was worried.

Adeline smiled faintly, but her exhaustion weighed heavy. "Brother," she greeted softly.

"You’ve been gone for far too long," Alaric said, his sharp eyes scanning her face as though trying to ensure she hadn’t returned with some grievous injury. "Do you have any idea how worried we have been?"

The news of her injuries had reached her father and brother. She wasn’t surprised about it. She healed herself after the Duke had been sentenced.

"I wasn’t." Aaron turned his face away to hide his expression. He was very concerned too but he wouldn’t reveal it that easily.

Ignoring his two sons, the Marquess picked her up and carried her inside. Dimitri quietly followed behind them. Alaric talked to him while their father welcomed Adeline back.

"It’s good to have you home," He said, looking back at her. "Now, tell me, what trouble have you been stirring up in the Eastern Duchy?"

Adeline’s lips twitched into a wry smile. "Why do you always assume I’ve been causing trouble?"

"Because you’re my daughter," The Marquess replied dryly. He swept her up into his arms with ease, carrying her towards the estate.

"Now, explain yourself." He said with a stern voice.

Adeline blinked, what is there to explain? She was here and she was safe, it would be best to forget about everything else. But her father was not going to let that happen.

She started to squirm immediately. Her father’s gaze was too intense and she wanted to run away! Have mercy! I am your daughter!

The Marquess sighed and put her down. "You rest for now. But I expect a full account of what happened while you were in the Eastern Duchy later."

Aaron wouldn’t let her waste a minute the moment she stepped out of her room after freshening up, he was there. He wanted to know what happened while he was away! He wanted the drama! The gossip!

He grabbed her hand and practically pulled her to his study. Adeline was caught off guard and let herself be pulled. She was already inside her father’s study when she realised what happened.

Aaron! Is this retaliation for all the times I got you in trouble?!

It was indeed retaliation. But also curiosity.

Once inside she found out that Alaric was there too! Did Aaron gather them all?! No, it was an amazing coincidence that she did not appreciate it in the slightest.

The Marquess leaned back in his chair and gestured for them to take a seat.

"Now," He said, his tone expectant. "Let’s hear it. And don’t leave anything out."

Adeline sighed, knowing there was no point in delaying. She straightened in her seat and began recounting everything.

"I went to the Eastern Duchy to investigate the Duchess’s husband," She began. "I knew he was unfaithful, but I discovered he’s far worse! He was a criminal involved in embezzlement and illegal dealings. So, I exposed him."

Alaric’s expression darkened. "You took on a criminal syndicate alone? Adeline—"

She shrugged awkwardly before correcting him, "A criminal syndicate is a big term. I just exposed one man." She smiled nervously.

She continued with more confidence this time, "Besides, I wasn’t alone! I had Dimitri with me!" She carefully judged her father’s expression before revealing her reasons, "It was necessary. By exposing him, I’ve gained the Duchess’s gratitude and a valuable favour that we can use when the time comes to face the Holy Temple."

Her father’s eyes widened in surprise. He didn’t realise his daughter was trying to help in her own way.
