Chapter 127: Sign of Divinity
Chapter 127: Sign of Divinity
He had a greater scheme planned out, didn’t he? What was it? Why did he recall the healers, why did he unleash a plague?! She knew the answer to that too. It was because of her, wasn’t it?
Tears started to stream down her face. She felt... Helpless. Dimitri ushered the knights away so that Adeline could use her powers in peace, but when he came back, he saw her crying.
"Adeline-"
"No, he went too far..." She said... In her anger, frustration, guilt and determination, Adeline let out a blinding light.
Before Dimitri could ask what she meant, a brilliant burst of light erupted from her, so intense that he had to shield his eyes.
She shined no less than a star in the sky. The sheer amount of Holy Power she oozed was incredible. No one ever witnessed something like that ever!
Her light covered the river... The entire river. The plants that had withered along its banks stood tall and lush once more, their leaves glistening with dew.
The light wasn’t confined to her immediate surroundings. It spread outward, stretching across the river like liquid sunshine, illuminating every stone, plant, and drop of water
Fish swam energetically through the water, their scales shimmering like precious gems. The air itself seemed to hum with newfound life.
People who went there to collect water, the dams that stored the water, every drop from that river glowed like a million tiny suns.
Everyone who came in contact with it was cured of the illnesses that ailed them. Seeing how the water glowed, people thought it was a miracle! A sign of divinity!
They gasped as a warmth spread through their body, soothing aches and banishing sickness. Word spread quickly about it, it was simply a miracle!
They collected the water and rushed to give it to their family members. Why else would water glow like that?! Anyone who came into contact with that water... Every plant that grew from it and every drop of rain that came from that river now had holy powers.
They didn’t have to drink it, just touching it was enough to feel the Goddess’s grace.
Adeline unwittingly solved the problem by tackling the source of the misfortune. The knights immediately ran up to her... That light they had just witnessed was remarkable!
They ran up to find the source... More like they ran to protect their lady not knowing that she was the cause of all this.
"Protect the lady!" One of the knights shouted, instinctively drawing their weapons as if to guard against some unseen threat.
Dimitri was still shocked by the entire ordeal. The river in front of him seemed to be bustling with life, and the flora around it was now alive with vitality.
Adeline turned slowly, her glow fading but her determination unwavering. She wiped the tears from her face and steadied herself, her body visibly trembling from the strain of unleashing so much power. Her voice was firm as she addressed the approaching knights.
"It’s done. The river is safe now," She said, her words heavy with responsibility.
The knights hesitated, their eyes darting between her and the transformed river. One of them, bolder than the rest, stepped forward. "My lady... What just happened? That light—?"
The others shook their head, there questions better left unanswered. It was their place to ask. Their job is to protect their Master and... Their Master’s secrets.
"It was nothing for you to concern yourselves with," Adeline cut him off sharply. "The source of the plague has been purified. That’s all you need to know." She said decisively.
She didn’t mean to be ungrateful, she tried to sound authoritative. She didn’t know she would lose control of her powers and expose herself... Lately, it felt like everything she did would only cause her more problems.
She remembered the Duchess’s words once again. Don’t let anyone know about your powers, it was not the right time.
But when would it be the right time? She was dejected. Though she cleansed the source of the plague she didn’t think of it as an achievement or something she accomplished... After all, it happened because of her.
Dimitri finally found his voice. "Adeline... That was—"
"Don’t," She interrupted, her gaze locking with his. "Not here. Not now."
He knew she was gifted. She was a girl blessed by the Goddess. But he didn’t know the extent of her powers. Everyone she displayed her powers, would be left amazed. How could he ever compare to her?
At most, he can improve his magic and fight... But she had the gift of life. That was something far greater than whatever he could manage to accomplish.
As they began their descent from the mountain, they saw the flourishing river ebb and flow. The glow has since vanished but the after effects remained.
Just when Adeline thought that everything was over. A huge gust of wind came in their direction. The weather on the mountain changed in a matter of seconds.
The once pleasant sky was now filled with storm clouds, and the mountain quickly became colder and colder. This wouldn’t do, they couldn’t go down the mountain now. They needed to find shelter and fast... There was a high chance that they’d freeze to death!
Fortunately, the knights had fire powers. Although it was no where as strong as the Marquess’s and the heirs’, it would be enough to keep them warm for a while.
One of the knights quickly found shelter, he was able to spot a cave in the distance. It was kind of surprising how the entrance of the cave was out in the open and not buried in snow, but now was not the time to ponder such questions.
They needed to move!
Adeline stepped into the cave, her footsteps hesitant, her body was shivering. The cold was getting to her. Dimitri couldn’t help but get closer to her, he hoped that he could give her some warmth.
The knight acted quickly, after securing the location they started a small fire near the entrance. They needed to make sure there was good airflow, but also that the cold winds wouldn’t put out the fire.
The cave wasn’t too big, the smoke could easily fill the cave and cause them problems.
The cave was dark, the air cool and damp, and there were a few icicles at the entrance.
The flickering light from the knights’ fire illuminated the interior in fragmented shadows, making every movement appear more sinister.
Adeline surveyed her surroundings carefully. The walls bore signs of a violent struggle—deep claw marks marred the stone, and bloodstains trailed erratically across the ground.
She glanced back at Dimitri, who had stopped short and was scanning the area with narrowed eyes.
"It’s clear that this cave is the home to some wild animal... My guess is wolves. Let’s just hope that they don’t come to find us." Dimitri narrowed his eyes as he took in the information.
They could fight off the wolves, but they were already tired. It would be best to not fight a pack of wolves and instead conserve their energy. They still have to climb down the mountain after all.
