Chapter 109: Unladylike!

He hoped that by helping this child find the truth, he could at least provide him with some sense of closure. It was time for him to atone.

Their first stop, however, wasn’t Everett. Adeline insisted they meet the Duchess first. She said it was essential, though the man didn’t fully understand why. Adeline had a plan, and he was in no position to question it.

They reached the Duchess’s quarters just before dawn. Inside, the Duchess lay sound asleep, only to be roused by a light but persistent knocking at her door.

knock knock

She furrowed her eyebrows but didn’t get up. Nothing was more important than sleep.

knock knock knock knock

The knocking only became more frequent annoying her. The sound grew louder, more insistent. She groaned, pulling the covers over her head, silently willing the knocker to take a hint and go away

KNOCK KNOCK

"No one has respect for the Duchess’s sleep" She mumbled before getting up to open the door. Clearly, it was an emergency, and if it wasn’t, she was going to fire people!

She opened the door expecting a maid but there was no one in front of her.

"I’m down here!" A little voice yelled.

She looked down to see a big fuzz of pink. Adeline’s messy hair triggered the Duchess. Just the sight of it grated on her patience, and the Duchess’s irritation doubled. She wouldn’t say she was a perfectionist but that mess was enough to ruin her sleep.

She pulled Adeline in by the hand and plopped her down on a chair. Before Adeline could say anything, she started to brush her hair.

Adeline, not quite sure what was happening, found herself seated in a plush chair, staring at her reflection in a mirror as the Duchess untangled the mess of curls

Well, this is awkward. She thought to herself. In the mirror in front of her, she could see how pissed off the Duchess looked, she dare not provoke her at this moment. She sat still like a doll and let the Duchess tie her hair up into a long braid.

"Now, tell me why you interrupted my sleep?" The Duchess looked into the mirror and narrowed her eyes. She held the comb in her hand waiting for a reply.

Adeline shivered a bit, was she going to get hit? "So, I brought evidence." She smiled nervously.

The Duchess raised her eyebrows. She didn’t take the child seriously at the beginning. She was curious as to what she would do, but she didn’t think Adeline would actually bring evidence.

Fine, it was a good enough reason to interrupt my sleep. The Duchess shook her head and asked Adeline to lead her to the evidence she collected. "Show me," she said, waving her hand toward the door.

What could it be? Reports proving embezzlement of money? Or plans of rebellion? Many possibilities went through her mind. What did this child find?

What she didn’t expect was for a man to be seated in her room!

"Adeline! Why is a man sitting in your room?!" This is very much against etiquette, she cried.

Adeline looked at her with blank eyes. Where else could she place this man? In the living room? That would freak people out! And he was a key witness! That’s why she seated him on her bed with Dimitri watching over him like a hawk!

The man sat awkwardly on her bed. He was afraid to touch anything. His legs were crossed and so were his arms. He was very nervous, he believed that these children were mature and powerful, but they were like any other kids!

He started to regret following them here. Especially that pink-haired kid!

"He is the evidence, Your Grace." She explained hoping that the explanation would be enough. It was in fact, not enough.

The Duchess pinched the bridge of her nose, sighing deeply as she glanced at the man. She sighed and took a seat, trying to regain her composure.

Adeline spoke up, hoping to ease the tension. "Duchess, this man was hired by the Duke to... To end a person’s life. He has proof that the Duke is behind Everett’s mother’s death. He’s willing to testify."

The man looked away, his face marked by guilt and shame. He wasn’t proud of his past, but he nodded, confirming Adeline’s words. "It’s true," he said in a low voice.

He continued in a voice barely above a whisper, "I was responsible for carrying out the Duke’s orders. I... I killed her. But I can provide proof. And I’m willing to testify, to tell everything."

"Why did he order you to kill that boy’s mother?" The Duchess was unaware that her husband had a child with a mistress. She knew he was up to something. She knew he was after her power...

Adeline quickly replied to that, she could finally let out all the truth, "Because the Duke is Everett’s father. He wanted to make his son the heir and... Sieze the Duchy."

She expected the Duchess to be in shock or not believe her but the Duchess didn’t do anything. She stayed silent for a moment before sighing deeply.

She regretted marrying this man, and now so many people were dragged into this mess. She slowly understood his true nature, for a man who wanted to seize her power... He would go to any length.

For someone who got cheated on, the Duchess didn’t feel sad... She felt... Guilt. If she got rid of him the moment he started harbouring those thoughts, he would not have had the power to do everything that he did.

He would be able to afford to hire an assassin... He wouldn’t have found a woman to have his child and then... Kill her.

She felt sorry for the other woman.

Adeline continued, "I just wanted you to know the truth... and also Everett. I don’t like that guy but he deserves to know the truth about his mother’s fate."

She turned to the man, who still sat hunched and silent. "You’re willing to face trial?" she asked him, her voice stern.

The man nodded. "Yes. I don’t expect mercy, but I’ll confess everything. It’s the least I can do."

The Duchess took a deep breath, trying to steady her thoughts. "You are quite the young lady, Adeline Kendrick. Fierce and capable. I did not expect you to achieve so much in such little time. I also apologise, I did not intend to put this burden on you."

She admitted it, she wanted to see what the child of the Marquess would be capable of. Adeline was only five-years-old but she was able to quickly uncover the scheme.
